hi hello everyone :))) today i thought we could do another video looking back on moments on the internet sort of like the magcon, tik tok and team ten videos but this time we’re going all the way back to 2011 to look at the movement rebecca black pioneered with her music video for friday! i had a ton of fun filming this especially bc it brought me back to when i first saw some of these in the ninth grade so hopefully if you’ve already seen these videos its still entertaining in that sort of ~nostalgic~ way, and if you haven’t seen them yet, i hope you are prepared to be enlightened with the art of low budget teen music videos because they are /quality entertainment/. anyways ill stop talking now lmao hope you guys enjoy!! :))

The scene with them dancing in kimonos is so... confusing. I’m assuming they’re supposed to be geisha/meiko, but they’re Japanese so they have nothing to do in a mv about Chinese food - but the makeup looks closer to be inspired by the Chinese tang dynasty and ... what is going on. It’s all badly done though, and treated as a bad party costume than something with deep cultural and historical values

I don't think they were necessarily trying to portray some sort of historically accurate, deep, culturally accurate representation of Chinese clothing. They probably just wanted to wear something fun and somewhat culturally relevant, even if they messed up and accidentally chose a kimono 😂 I um, dont get the vibe that it's important that they ultra-accurately depict aspects of Chinese culture, especially because the song is *about* an americanized version of Chinese food, haha. It's not really a song about chinese culture

Shes just trying to portray an aesthetic for her music video, which is about american chinese food. That aesthetic is "Chinese". I dont think it's wrong or hurtful to anyone if she wants to portray that aesthetic in her video. It sure is funny though for anyone who knows that they messed up and accidentally picked out a Japanese outfit hahhaha! I just dont see why it's a bad thing otherwise tho. Maybe you got a take I'm not considering, but I just dont see how shes hurting anyone at all

Nowhere did I say that this silly music video was meant to be educational, nowhere did I disagree that it’s about Americanised Chinese food, nowhere did I say it hurt people, all I said was that someone’s culture isn’t a costume (or an aesthetic, whichever word you prefer), and that it was ignorant. Things don’t have to be made to be educational for it to not be insensitive.

He had their name in the tite and he was just saying some weird stuff. This is after they made a video about how creepy he was in those music videos with he girl. He said they got so scared that they both got in the car with Shredder (their dog) and had to leave their house because they were worried something would actually happen

The most stupid thing about that happened in my life was that my chinese teacher who is actually chinese showed us that video and said that it was good and showed the culture of China when it really doesn’t because of Chow Mein which is not actually chinese and she sings about eating fortune cookies which isn’t chinese either.
