I wish there was a way for every teacher to see this! Some of the smartest people I grew up with were labelled as 'bad' kids because the adults in their life couldn't interact with them on a level that was actually engaging.

22 years ago I had a Music teacher who taught us a song "Kids are people too". She unleashed something in me when I understood that. I was the child who would ask her teacher why her tone was so angry sounding, or why we had to comply with something when we didn't want to do it. Many times my desk was pulled to the hall, or to the front of the classroom, facing the chalkboard with my back to the teacher and class. I am still considered defiant. Hearing Katherine and hearing about her kids, I know in my heart more of us are becoming like this and it will become the norm. You are brilliant Katherine, thank you.

This is such an interesting story and creates a really lovely perspective. It's true that you feel differently towards yourself and the world when you feel loved and important, and if you can practice compassion for people who don't feel this way it's a great way of carrying that forward.

I remember visiting friends houses when I was a child and being so shocked by the pressure their parents put on them. One time, a friends mother had bought us both ice-cream (we would have been 6ish) and their mother looked at them and started cleaning the mess around their face saying ‘why are you so messy, look at your friend (me), look how tidy he is when he eats ice-cream, why can’t you be more like that’. Even at that age, that made me so uncomfortable to be used as a comparison for someone to be punished. This has stuck with me and I always let kids be messy and have fun because of that.

I believe children have so much to say about things we adults are unconsciously conditioned to not say and there is great value in that. Though children are still learning and growing and coming into themselves. I feel that providing boundaries where they can speak these truths is vital, and it is also vital that we as adults can identify when they need to move into bigger containers, even if that contain is bigger than the one we ourselves are residing in. There is a lot of self awareness needed to ensure the future is better for all.
