This is a wonderful video. I have been at my first new home for just over a year now. I have made friends with squirrels and the many birds in my yard. My favorite is the red bellied woodpecker. Sometimes when I open my back door he will start talking loudly at me. I'll say "c'mon, c'mon, you can eat" He will then fly down on top of my fence about 12 feet away and just talk up a storm. He knows me and he knows the foods coming. He loves unshelled peanuts. There is a male and female and a baby now too. The other day I opened my backdoor. My screen door is basically a huge window. I looked outside and on top of my fence was a squirrel, a blue jay and my red bellied friend. The woodpecker is the only bird that sits on the other side of the fence with his head and a little bit of his torso peaking over the top. As soon as he saw me he started talking away. I then dropped their food on the grass and he immediately flew over and started eating. I was only 7 feet away. These creatures know when they can trust you. These guys are a huge blessing. My conure of 21 years sits on top of his cage and watches our "birdies and 'quirrels" for hours. He loves it.

They are very smart little birds. My feeders hang in a peach tree outside of my kitchen window. It's a late peach that comes in late July to mid August. First time I noticed it pissed me off a little when I saw one of them pecking at a peach near the top of the tree. But then I noticed it would only come back to the same peach every time. Curious, I grabbed a ladder to see what the bird was doing with the peach? I found that it had broken the skin away around the stem on top exposing the flesh. The fun part was the result. The open wound was packed full of tiny little bugs. The bird was coming back for the bugs and simply cleaning up the wound for the next round. Sneaky devil. hahahaha He only did that with a couple of the peaches before picking time. I'll gladly share a few with them for some pest control. The red bellies were the king of the roost around the feeders until last year when I finally coaxed in a couple of redheaded woodpeckers. They don't take no junk from the red bellies. lol

Great video. I love the sounds they make. I hear them quite often & watch them peck on one particular tree in my sister's backyard. It isn't a dead tree though, but it must have allot of the creatures (bugs & spiders) that they like to eat. Now I have learned from your video how to attract them. Sometimes I'll put nuts on top of a tall, dead stump over by the fence & occasionally I'll see one get them. Gonna go get me some berries now. I'd love to have them the way you do. Nice setup. Red bellied heaven!!! Thank you so much. Nice recording too.

Thank you for the post! I have quite a few in my area and two males and one female continually come by for my welfare state peanuts. They have me trained very well! One male will come and take the peanut from my hand. I'm working on the other two. I built one nesting box today, took only about an hour... this for my front yard and I will build another for my backyard being I noticed two males. It's obvious that although shy, they do like human interaction. This means that when they get used to you, you will notice personality quirks beyond a "stupidity" of a bird. This will make my life a bit more interesting along with making their life a bit more interesting. Thank you for your post!

Ok read all the comments and people need to realize birds are still in the 60s. Mom is at home taking care of the kids. Dad is going out and supporting them. And there he is at your feeder! Although the females will come out eventually. 😁👍

Great video! Awesome information on the Red-bellied Woodpeckers! We have a tree in front of our house which has become their nest for many years! However, a strong storm passed through and broke the branch off the tree. There were three chicks inside. One died on impact, two survived. It’s a long story but the bottom line is that only one was left and I named him Woody! I made three videos on the experience and I was able to get a close up of their feeding routine! I’ll send you the link to the last video I made. Read the description and in there there are two more links to the other two videos I made about this one little bird! I’m sure you will like it! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/d81pedJhmN3Haas.html

Goodness, so the females don't have the red coloring? I only have males then at my feeder. That's odd. No females whatsoever. I've plenty of snags, and that what attracts them to my property, well that and 🥜!

So the males have the full red on the top of the head, babies have no red, and females have some red on the back of the head but little red on top:) they almost look like that are balding if the red was hair 🤣

@@FloridaKeysBirding Haha, yeah after seeing that last night I had to look it up to see if females were redheaded as well. It's like a balding mohawk! I found out that the red headed woodpeckers are dropping a number so I'm wondering if I can do more to help support them.

Lol yes!! They look to my like they are balding 🤣 but yes u did hear the red headed woodpecker number are lower. I think providing them food and a good place for nesting would be a good start😊
