Autumn is not the best time to climb up on a scaffold in Moscow, but it is still far better than doing so in the winter. Tsar Ivan wants to see results and our team will prove to him that we are the best builders in the city. We are sure to finish off those decorative arches with the brightest shining stones and ensure our place on the list of the government’s trusted workers.
Sheila Santos and Israel Cendrero make up the game designing duo known as Llama Dice. To date they have put out various titles with different Spanish publishers (1987 Channel Tunnel, Mondrian, Smoothies), and The Red Cathedral is the first game they have published with Devir. Pedro Soto (Holmes, Sherlock & Mycroft, Papua) and Chema Román (El mundo de Águila Roja) took care of the graphic elements of the game with a grand homage to Ivan Bilibin, an iconic Russian artist from the turn of the twentieth century. Despite being from a far later period, his mark is very recognizable in the game.
The Red Cathedral is a strategic, “Euro” board game in which the players take the roles of construction teams. Their job is to work together to put up St. Basil's cathedral in Moscow, as ordered by Ivan the Terrible. However, only one of them will be able to gain the favor of the Tsar.
During the game, the players can carry out one of these three actions: assign a section of the cathedral, send resources to that section to build it, or go to the game board to achieve more resources. Each of these actions has its own mechanism and requires that the players pay close attention to what the other players are doing.
When the sections of the cathedral are assigned the players take possession of the spaces in each of the columns that make up their section. The more sections built and the completion of each with its own tower, the more points the player will be given at the end of the game.
The players can send resources to the cathedral sections that they have claimed. When they complete each of those sections they will obtain rewards in money and prestige points. They will also be able to install decorations on the completed sections to achieve even more recognition from the Tsar. This part of the game also works as a clock, since once any player completes the construction of their sixth section it brings about the end of the game.
The game board shows us the iconic rondel of The Red Cathedral. It is where the players obtain all the resource types needed to complete their work on the cathedral, as well as to get favors from the guilds and professionals to make the most of their trip to the market. In the central rondel the players choose the die they wish to use and move forward as many spaces as is shown on the top side of said die, in order to obtain the resources indicated in the space destined by the die.
The Red Cathedral is a very accessible game with regard to its rules because it is very easy to understand the various levels of the game, but it remains very interesting with regard to strategy. It is sure to please those who are more interested in the challenge offered by trying to strategically optimize their position in each game rather than the complexity of the rules.

5.0 - My absolutely favorite games. You can pry them out of my cold dead hands.
4.5 - Love this game! At the same time missing something that would make it a 5. Could be hard to table, lacking variability, a little light, etc.
4.0 - Really great game, almost always keeping, although has meaningful complaints as to what takes away from the experience.
3.5 - Really enjoyed, don't love it, may lose out to better games but the idea of never playing again is a bit sad.
3.0 - A good game, would play and suggest with the right people, if I never played it again wouldn't lose any sleep.
2.5 - A game I'd play again , but will never suggest it myself
2.0 - A game I don't want to play again
1.5 - A game I can't find any reason to recommend
1.0 - A game that is just bad.

Two rules corrections: 1. You are not allowed to claim any section, you must claim from bottom up. 2. The resources you trade have to be the same - you are not allowed to trade a green and the gold for a purple

It's not a rule to only use 1 expansion card instead of the clergie one, its a recommendation to introduce the expansion, once you got it you can go all out

Good....because we quickly ignored that recommendation :)

I can speak to the solo mode and say I really enjoyed it! The fact that you can see what your "opponent" is going to do next allows you to plan your turn in a very gratifying way, denying them the ability to place an ornament or getting a resource before they move the die you needed out of the way. Quite a satisfying experience.

I love this game. Small box taking up a tiny space and yet it is packed full of tasty decisions. The craftsmen cards provide replayability and the cost of the game is responsible. Great fun and I love the theme 😊

Great review. I wish you would try Harvest sometimes if you come across it. For me it is the biggest game in a small box. It has really easy rules, plays quick (just 10 actions) yet it has everything most big games have. Maybe even more than some big games without expansion.

Anxiously awaiting my copy of the base game that I purchased from the GameNerdz Nerdz Day Sale in July. Glad to hear you give this a good rating.

@David Save I love GameNerdz but I don't think they thought things through when they scheduled Nerdz Day and a move so close together. My hope was to have these games in before my girls got back so I could enjoy some of them solo. Girls return on Sunday and my order still hasn't shipped. Longest I have ever waited to get an order shipped was only about a week.

I regret not picking this up on Nerdz Day sale, it was such a good price. It still isn't a bad price in general but I finally played Red Cathedral and it surprised me how much I enjoyed it.

Played the original and it didn't feel like it needed an expansion at all. I'm a theme guy and I felt the theme a little bit as you see the cathedral be built. It's certainly not as dryand completely themeless as other euros. I enjoyed my experience of it but it's a bit headache inducing and because I don't like making other players wait a long time as I calculate all possibilities, I just play sub-optimally. Ultimately, I let this one go (which was easy because it was in very high demand in Dubai at the time).

Agreed on playing the original, but once the expansion was added it was a clean fit

Sigh. Usually agree with your views and tastes in games. However, Red Cathedral really bore me in my one play of base which I actually won. I’m deep into Euros, so it’s not the dryness per se that gets me down. It’s just somehow really not fun for me. Funny you mentioned Merlin in the end and I actually enjoyed Merlin a lot considering I’m not really a Feld lover. Game length isn’t that big a deal for me, as long as I’m having fun. I’d rather have 2.5h of fun in 1 game than play 2-3 games in which 1-2 of them aren’t as fun!

Great review. I even slept on this one for a bit but I can't go for the expansion. I think The Red Cathedral is Fantastic but I adamantly REFUSE to buy expansions that won't fit in the base game. I've broken that rule for The Great Wall (pretty sure those expansions aren't going to fit in the base) and for Roll for the Galaxy. Tho not really for Roll, there is an Alex style exception in that case. However the Red Cathedral box is so small its my one game with no deluxifacations because they won't fit in the insert I made. So stop reporting on how great the expansion is!~

Dude, base game nearly do not fit in base box. Which is great, they have respect for our shelf space. In that case your rule is stupid, bc it promotes big empty boxes over small ones.
