The sad part about the whole "Kitty wins public trust by beating Galactus" bit is that if it were done now (or if it actually happened IRL) then there would be a very large contingent of people accusing the mutants of fabricating the threat, a False Flag, if you would.

There's goatee Wolverine, who is Millar's reboot Wolverine that we all hate, and there's non-goatee Wolverine who's just normal Wolverine but in the 1610 universe. One thing that'll always sadly taint the way Ultimate handled mutants were having them essentially not be naturally occurring but a by-product of the old super soldier program. That, along with removing Magneto's holocaust backstory, just really sours even the stronger moments.
@Ocelot835
@Ocelot835 2 ай бұрын
To be honest the WW2 backstory just make less and less sence due to age gap, like it could have work in 70s and 80s, but in modern times? You want me to belive Magneto is over seventy years old yet only recently he started his mutant supremacy campaign? At some point it just doesn’t add up and creates more unnecessary questions about his backstory. Or worse, add some convoluted retcons to justify it with some age-extending serum bullshit. To me its better to rid off Holocaust origin and replace it with either Marvel equivalent of it (like how they did with Vietnam in Punisher backstory) or with another more recent case of genocide - its not like we didn't saw lesser horrors than Nazi concentration camps after WW2, sadly
@serenityq26
@serenityq26 2 ай бұрын
That wasnt always his backstory so...
@alexlennen
@alexlennen 2 ай бұрын
@@Ocelot835 yeah it's definitely getting way harder to maintain the WW2 backstory due to timeline reasons, but like I said with Nomi, you don't have to use WW2 exactly, just another historical or even fictional event that has the same effect on him. Off the top of my head, Ultimate Magneto's origin story involved Weapon X and killing his own ma, which doesn't really do it for me imo

To be honest, I prefer meta powers not being natural. Makes things far less complicated. Plus, the only reason the x-gene was invented was so Stan and his staff didn't have to come up with different origins per team member. A decision that really has made x-men more problematic then they need to be.

I especially love her recent stuff. She had her glory days of Marauders v1 which was just absolutely awesome and gave her an amazing makeover and the best mission/goal she's had since DOFP, and then in the Fall she was basically the best character, given the best arc, really the only ones that come close are Storm and Nightcrawler

@apersonwhomayormaynotexist9868 Red Queen pirate jacket is by far her best look, which was very nice to see after a predominantly passable at best costume run. Shoutouts to the lame pure black "post breakup" jumpsuit she wore for like 4 issues at the very very end of Excalibur vol 1. Before Captain Pryde, the best one was probably 80s baggy sleeves. They kept sticking her in boring New Mutants esque Blue and Yellow, often with terrible polo - collars. The Shadowkat (what happened there, btw, why the k now?) one looks great too, but I hope the long hair comes back.

What was the most tragic lost thing in ultimate comics is that it’s the only series where anti mutant prejudice actually made sense. You know Alex, you talk about the depressing nature of how the X-Men proved to have learned nothing in Ultimatum. But I feel that nothing sums up the depressing nature of that event more than the revelation that Nick Fury gave to Magneto where he revealed that mutants are products of the Weapon X program, in an attempt to recreate the Super Soldier serum. In other words, unlike 616, mutants AREN’T a “next phase” in evolution like they thought. Instead, they are exactly what a large portion of the world consider them to be: mistakes. Just goes to show how the Ultimate Universe all but abandoned any sense of hope or humanity, for complete and utter nihilism.

Hi, Alex. You may notice that I have an appreciation for Post-Ultimatum Ultimate X-Men, especially for Jimmy Hudson. This was like my little corner of Marvel Comics that nobady talks but I loved it anyway. So when you announced this video, I was over the floor and hyped. 🎉 Anyway, I watched this video and it's great. I am glad that you find bright spots in this series that no one give a chance. Despite sometimes being a little cynical and fumble some plotlines (like Jean becoming crazy and decide to kill all the mutants that don't follow her), I believe that the second volume has a lot of things that make up for the weakest points: Kitty becoming the leader, the young generation taking over and succeded what the first X Men team fail, the whole Mutant Nation in the desert and how despite all the losses and hate towards them, they didn't give up. However, I am little disappointed that you didn't talk about Jimmy Hudson (until the near end) 😢, who in my opinion it's the most interesting mutant post Ultimatum due one simple fact: it's Wolverine without the baggage. He's a simple kid that have similar powers but doesn't define him. He's easygoing (unless you provoke him), reckless but not rudeless (without a cause) and very loyal. Logan left him to be raised in a small town on Florida by a friend that met in the Golf War, so he can have something that he didn't have: a happy childhood with loving parents. That allows him to be good despite all bad things that happened after joining the Kitty group. Not only that but he became Kitty biggest supporter when she made the deal. He was always stand by her and always help her when she need it (until she regain her confidence). And despite for a little consider joining Jean team, he returned to be with Kitty and the others. After Secret Wars, he was one of the few characters of the Ultimate Universe to survive the destruction (like Miles Morales) and join the Young Version of the Original 5 X Men (don't asked why they were teenagers). The only reason that happened was at the time Logan was dead, so Wolverine mantle was available. This allow not to die with the Ultimate Universe and being forgotten. However, when main Logan returned, Marvel decided to make him a Poison host (that are antiSymbiotes creatures) and got rid of him. That was very sad bc I truly believe that he has a lot of potential that would allow him to stand out of Wolverine (and his other sons), but only if they would use him more. I hope Alex that you read this and consider doing a follow up video telling Jimmy Hudson story (like you did with Ben Reilly) as the Story of the Wolverine that Marvel forgot. In any case, I will be excited for your next video since it's about Paul (the Symbol of Current ASM status quo) and the next videos that you will post. Cheers.

I didn't have a problem with Ultimatium, although at that point, I completely checked out of the Ultimate comics except for the Mile Morales Spider-Man stories, that Arthur Adams X-Men series, and Ultimate Villain(?), where Reed Richards was now the villain. Maybe because I largely viewed the Ultimate Universe characters as versions of the 616 characters. Doctor Strange is dead? Well, "real" Doctor Strange is still around. I would point out that in the first X-Men arc, Cyclops temporarily defected to the Brotherhood because he wasn't sure of Xavier's philosophy, so his killing Magneto isn't crazy.

the post ultimatum era of the ultimate universe is my favorite era because it took what was left over from ultimatum and used it to its advantage to set it self a part from the 616 universe in major ways. its kinda like the prototype of what is the new current ultimate universe where its setting itself a part from the 616 universe by re inventing most of the characters origins.

Dude that was one great vid man! Liked the point where they kinda missed the ball on the meaning of The X-Men being for nothing. Great stuff.

Can you please do entire history of the green lanterns from earth. Or just entire history of Hal Jordan. I think it’ll be really interesting seeing as it’s entirely based off his pure will to move forward. Pls consider I’m a huge fan of your videos, especially the entire history ones.

I'm not a fan of video essays. I swore I would never watch one again but I couldn't ignore this. It may sound over the top but thank you so much. Ultimate Comics X-Men deserves more, I hope more people can now see what I saw. Long Live Utopia

it's so easy and profitable to be a hater these days, yet you brought a nuanced and interesting point of view to this series. A lot of what was done in the Ultimate Universe felt like testing grounds for the 616 universe, can only hope there's a much brighter future to the new Ultimate Universe

I'm actually one of the people that dropped ultimate X-Men with ultimatum I kind of just assumed that the series was going to be done after that. It's wild to know that went on for a bit longer and that the story actually seems really cool

I remember when volume 2 was being hyped up all those years ago and never thought to give it a chance. It actually sounds quite lovely and redeeming, and honestly containing more pathos and internal logic than most of the mainline X books.

Beautiful video, very well made. Why is iceman wearing a durag for like 90% of this? I assume the reason you didn’t touch on it here is because you’re planning on making a whole separate video on the topic. Can’t wait to see it.

Came here from "the wall" being recommended. I must confess I've... never really been into superheroes. Being raised a (albeit very VERY weird) girl most of my life, it was seen as just boy stuff. I've watched maybe the spiderverse films, one recent marvel movie against my will, the usual. I must say I am actually so fucking shocked at how well you can tell these stories, I'm usually never missing context and put on videos in order to chill and listen to when I play games / work on webcomic / code. Seeing that, two years ago, you had basically no subscribers is crazy. Happy 300k+ subs, dude. I fear I now intimately know all of the secrets on those weird marvel characters.
