I started watching this French Revolution playlist because I had to learn for my exam, at this point though I am just watching because it is insanely entertaining, informative, and understandable. Kudos man

Robespierre could've just phrased it: "If you're not with us, you're with the terrorists" (exchange terrorists with monarchists/counterrevolutionaries and you get the point ;-)

"The blood of Danton chokes him!" "Cowards! Is it Danton you regret? Why did you not defend him!" Besides being awesomely dramatic, I believe Robespierre's response to that dig really sums him up. Robespierre, at least before he went to crazy, god-like Roman emperor land, was ready to stick to his beliefs regardless of the consequences. You especially see this in his criticism of starting the war with Austria.

Oh, I thought the lady and the swan in Thermidor is supposed to represent Leda and Zeus, based on the Greek-Roman mythology. (when Zeus descends in the form of a swan and impregnates Leda, who consequently gives birth to Helen of Troy)

The United States has adopted quite a bit of the metric system, especially in manufacturing, medicine, commerce and to a lesser extent, agriculture. We have a real hybrid here.

Leon Trotsky warned against a Thermador; namely, a weakening of the revolution. He himself ended up with an ice axe in his head courtesy of his old comrade in arms - Stalin. The French and Russian Revolutions (that his the October phase) parallel each other. The French were a major inspiration for the Bolsheviks.

8:30 Funny how not only did that "revolutionary clock" not last, but modern SI is based more on the second (old fashioned 1/60th of a minute) then on the meter itself. SI defines the meter as the distance light travels in a vacuum in 1/299,792,458th of a second.

Thanks Tom. Robespierre was a rationalist. He wanted the state to facilitate the irradication of hunger of the poor. He wasn't anti-capitalist but he did feel responsibility to end the suffering of absolute poverty. So the State had responsibilities! His deepest commitment was to establish a society based on virtue! Make people liberated from oppression and superstition they WILL become virtuous and good. Unfortunately, the horror of The Terror really is an object lesson of brilliant ideas going hatefully wrong! Love your history and analysis 👏 👌

Don't know, it makes a lot more sense than having twice 12 hours with 5 times 12 minutes with 5 times 12 seconds (yes, that's how it works, base 12). Looking at it with more open eyes, the one we're using is a lot more crazy than this very logic, "metric" one.

But Robespierre and the National Convention did not want to dechristianise France. He asked the National Convention to stop the Sans-Culottes and Paris Commune from doing so. Eventually in December the National Convention declared that there will be no more dechristianisation and so after that he made the Supreme Being to replace the Festival of Reason that the Paris commune had created
@revolutionariesoffreedom23742 жыл бұрын
Robespierre was anti religion at beginning and he wanted to replace the priests in France because 70% of the priests supported the old regime, which is the absolute monarchy… so they old priests were gu*llotined and replaced with new ones, more favorable to the republic… the thing is that the more radicals were still attacking them no matter if they supported the republic or not, so Robespierre send these radicals all to the gu*llotine because he judged that these priests were favorable to the republic because they have had replaced all the priests who were unfavorable… Robespierre even created the cult of the supreme being after the priests were replaced with priests favorable to the republic…
