Beginning at the end of the 14th Century, the Renaissance created a new type of man, triggering economic, scientific, technical, religious, social and cultural developments that are unique in history.
Never before have culture, economics and science developed so rapidly within one century as during the Renaissance. But what was the catalyst for it, what is the "Renaissance factor"? The Renaissance is an epoch unique in human history: Never before have art, culture, economics and science developed so rapidly within a single century. We search for the "Renaissance factor", that combination of influences that triggered a pivotal period in history. It is a journey through time from Ancient Rome to the Crusades and the Black Death in the 14th century, events that defined the developments of the Renaissance. We travel with Michelangelo to the major construction site that was to become St. Peter’s Basilica, to the banking houses of the Medicis and the workshop of Johannes Gutenberg. We examine some of the many innovations of the Renaissance such as linear perspective, the printing press and double-entry bookkeeping. We ask what these achievements mean to us today and how - almost half a millennium later - we continue to benefit from the "Renaissance factor." And we delve deeper with the help of spectacular reenactments and our "special investigators" - modern-day trendsetters, scientists, business tycoons, fashion designers and artists.

Sculpting is the most amazing art form.... especially carving from a solid block. They're not adding to create a form. They are subtracting to reveal the form they envision inside. Pure genius.

I'm lucky if I can make a blob of clay round and then i see Michelangelo's marble work and ask ... "Why do I even bother?" Genius is such an incredibly overused word. These guys had it. I in 10 million talent

@@human7491 No problem. Each has their own opinion. But take this into consideration; You can fix a mistake in a painting. But in sculpting marble, one wrong bang on the chisel can ruin the entire piece. Also...working in three dimensions requires significantly more brain power. But like I said...to each his own...😎

@@human7491 Not trying to dis paint on canvas by any means.... Some of the worlds most famous, beautiful works of art were created on canvas. But marble sculpting is still the most impressive skill.... Very few people can do it well. Compared to painting

yep, the Renaissance was quite a period in history. and we've been using what we've learned to move backwards ever since. what we learned during that period has been used to rob us, oppress us and enslave us. thanks to the Renaissance, or, more accurately, the men of wealth and power of that time, gangsters have passed on their irresponsible fascist practices to every succeeding generation of rulers. these rulers have used "knowledge" to the detriment of humanity and to perpetuate and consolidate their power over us. its led to hyper-inflation, accumulation of wealth into fewer and fewer hands, mass political corruption, perpetual war, genocide, pollution, over-population, climate change, the corporate-state and the police-state that we're currently experiencing. thanks Renaissance.

"No Bias!"? It is surprising that nothing is mentioned about the influence of the Golden Islamic period. Everything including Art, Architecture, Algebra, Geometry were advanced by the Islamic world. Nothing was lost for centuries as mentioned in the documentary. Either the research was lacking or Islamic influence has been purposely washed out.

@@lordsavior8034 How can it be different my dear brother? It's about the continuity and influence. And this continuity was not mentioned. Instead, the film maker mentioned the term "the knowledge was lost"! Davinci and Michaelangelo both were influenced by the Islamic arts and science, which in turn were influenced by Greeks, Romans, Indians and Chinese. It was because of the Muslims that these knowledge survived and thrived.

I grew up trying to draw superheroes like I saw in the comic books. The first time I saw Michelangelo sketches, paintings, and sculptures I was awestruck by this guy who made Adam, for example, look more amazing that any comic book artist I knew. Jim Lee, Todd McFarlane were awesome but this was epic in my eyes, Michelangelo and Davinci had an amazing eye. I've never known anyone that used a limp-wrist like Michelangelo and make that form so strong looking. On hair, Davinci didn't detail a few parts and shade the rest....he literally illustrated every single curl in hair. Drawing pictures isn't easy, the human form isn't easy, and I read once that illustrating/drawing/painting were the closest humans can get to recording the mind. I was born in the wrong era, these days you're expected to have a single career until you die.That's not what these guys did and nobody can even come close to saying they weren't geniuses. Great in so many ways.

"Expected to have one career until u die". Thats a limitation you put on yourself. You must have been born in the 40's or 50's. That time was all about working,getting married,have children. That way of being started to crubble in the mid 60's. Theres still time for you to do something that feed ur soul

Same here. I used to think I knew anatomy, drawing superheroes and heroic figures with all the major muscle groups. But seeing the work of the masters and how they rendered the less predictable forms like the underlying bones, tendons, the knee, the shoulder bones, etc blew my mind. Ever since then I became a sculptor and a 3d artist

What isn’t known so widely is that the invention of the concave mirrors around the same time allowed many of these artists to create their highly realistic works. Concave mirrors essentially work like a lens and can project light rays onto a surface such as a canvas. Artists such as leonardo, van eyck, and Vermeer are thought to have used this new technology to make their paintings. Thanks for the great doc dw !

It works like camara obscura, and there are a documental about Vermeer where they say he, as well as others renacentist painters used to use it to reach the high precision of its painting, like the painting of Delft city, for example.

After watching this documentary, my passion for this field has been rekindled. Even though I missed the opportunity to become an architect, my love for the profession remains as strong as ever. The documentary reminded me of the intricate blend of creativity and practicality that architecture embodies. As an Italian/ English person, I am Very proud of my Italian roots. Growing up in the UK, people always mocked me for being Italian and I could never understand why, I think it was always related to the WW2. But I started to read about history and realised how Italy was the only country in the World to effect the world twice, from ROME to the Renperiod. Even the St.Georges flag is Italian, from Genoa which was once under the Kingdom of Sardinia. Sadly, our politicians are running a Great country.

to all the people saying we need a new Renaissance, I think your close but I would look into the Enlightenment the period heavily influence, and directly after. The Enlightenment was the age of the triumph of science (Newton, Leibniz, Bacon) and of philosophy (Descartes, Locke, Spinoza, Kant, Voltaire, Diderot, Montesquieu). Unlike the Renaissance philosophers, they no longer sought validation in the texts of the Greco-Roman philosophers, but were predicated more solidly on rationalism and empiricism, they had pretty much abandoned the project of Scholasticism-that is, trying to prove God and revealed truth through pure reason, a very late medieval and Renaissance kind of obsession. That is what we need right now, a Re-Enlightenment also has a nice ring to it.

If he was raised as a millennial he would probably be drugged and suppressed like all other different or imaginative children. Sadly that is what is happening to our brightest minds, I feel so sad about that but also happy that those drugs were not so available when I was a child because I had a mind of my own and didn't fit the status quo. The age of Einsteins coming out of the USA may be over, what would suck would be for the rest of the world to follow suit. We are so Obviously screwing ourselves over again and again on so many levels all because of fear based thoughts. If it doesn't come from love and acceptance then don't do it, that alone would save life on earth.

With so much invention and involvement by Italians, whether in sculpture, painting, architecture, technology, medicine, music, dance, fashion, bookkeeping, and science, I find it strange that even though Vasari coined the Italian term "Rinascimento", the French term "Renaissance" became the standardized name for this fantastic era.

Keep in mind that the Italian peninsula wasn't a unified nation-state until 1860. Most of the Italian city-states that were Renaissance hotspots were also heavily influenced by the French.

Between 9:24-9:37, along with a video depicting a Roman market, speaks the narrator about Rome: “At the time Rome was home to a million people, 20 times more than one of the largest cities of the Renaissance: London.” And lo and behold: At 9:32 we hear a seller shouting, “Bedava gömlek, bedava! Geç kalırsan alamazsın!” and a woman’s voice (a reply to the shouting seller): “Kısa kollusunu ver!” The parts in Not-English above, in fact, are in Turkish :) And I presume the voice recording is from a present-day market in Istanbul. The seller shouts: “Dirt cheap! These shirts are dirt cheap! You wouldn’t (be able to) find if you were late to buy one now!” And that’s when I know for sure that the woman’s voice is a response to the seller. Because she asks what she wants from the seller: “Let me see a short sleeved one.” It is hilarious, as well as fun, for me to come across such an unintended “Easter Egg” in a “serious looking” documentary from a distinguished channel like Deutsche Welle. Thanks very much DW Documentary. You made my day. :))

The Renaissance is the most outstanding period for art in my opinion. Also architecture and engineering, given the tools they had. Today we can make more advanced stuff, yes, but we have advanced computers, tools, techniques, materials, etc.
