42 years old. I think I will die never having as much fun as I did seeing them. And that is OK.

This song is such a masterpiece! It should be common knowledge that it's one of the biggest rock anthems ever

You have to wonder what might have been for the Replacements if Bob was able to keep it together. I always thought he was the perfect foil to Westerberg's brilliant songwriting. Bob kept the band grounded, and never let them stray too far from their hard rockin' roots.
@bradleylovej

I think he really needed to hear this. Obviously I don't have any idea, but it seems like Bob was probably confused about his place in the band and at times didn't see eye-to-eye with the direction Westerberg was taking it. Probably contributed to his substance abuse. I really wish someone he respected just sat him down and said, "Calm down, big fella. It may not feel like you're doing much because you're not shredding as hard as you want, but this is actually perfect. You're contribution is literally making this band what it is, and it's just as important as Paul's.

Firing Bob was the worst decision Paul ever could have made. Sure, they had some modicum of success after he was gone, but the fire was gone.

@@bradleylovejwhatever you think you might know about a band musically, the band definitely knows (sole exception is the singer sometimes). Everyone including Bon knew how important he was but it was simply untenable with his behavior. He had to go to go on, even though it mortally wounded the band in the process and it did die several years later… poor Bob.

I saw them 7 times with Bob, and 7 times after Bob. The 7 shows with Bob were absolutely amazing. One of the shows was at a corner bar ( I kid you not) in December '84. Probably the best show I've ever witnessed- by anyone. Check out the venue-491 Grant Avenue, Buffalo, NY. Yep-that blue building. Smokin'

I saw them many times at Maxwell's (they were always opening for some flavor of the moment). Always accepted them with bemusement at the time. Have much better appreciation now, nearly 40 years later.

This was the peak for the band. It was two weeks after their SNL appearance. All the bootlegs from Oct. '85 - spring of '86 rock like an M'fer. Too bad there's no real good footage of this period.

When they were on, man were they on. When they were off it was a spectacle. The unpredictability of their persona was almost certainly an element of their legend. Long live 'Mats

They're all playing great but the amazing thing about this performance is that it shows the song at its heart is just the complete opposite sentiment as to the one that's made on the "Pleased to meet me" version. The one that made it to vinyl is a super-catchy but kind of typical road song, feeling lonely for someone while away touring. It's great for what it is, very romantic. But this version here is all sarcasm. He can't wait......until it's over. It's brilliant stuff.

Maxwell's was one of the best clubs in the NYC metropolitan area. I saw Alex Chilton there in the 1990s. Mr. Westerberg pushed passed me to get to the stage for a guest spot. I almost had to take him down for being so rude, but I let it go because he's a pipsqueak.

They played Maxwell's a fair bit back then. I remember one show - had a weird time like four in the afternoon on a Tuesday or something equally odd but it was five bucks and when you walked in the door they gave you a free beer. A good time was had by all.
