All dedication, the people that donated their own time and physical effort toward 1309 are deserving of much credit, to say the least as they resurrected a great part of our history. I would like to say Thank you.

@@eugeeropel5572 Personally, I am against the restoration. We don't need another loco burning fossil fuels, polluting, and contributing to global warming climate change,. The best course of action would be to tear the loco apart with cutting torches and send the scrap for melting down.

Well for the slower steep mountain they pull it is perfect for them, but it would not do the job of mainline excursions, on flatter lands like others would such as 765, 1225, 611, or something like 4449 or 614 were made to do at a slighter lower loading and a higher speed, this could haul lots of cars, but could not keep the great speed needed to pull amtrak excursions for example, and as this guy on the tour states they are large beasts and working on them is no easy task, even if the parts look like a jumble they are laid out a certain way on the floor so we know where everything is, so too with 765 I help out with, we are doing tenderwork right now to get her ready for a weekend of highspeed runs in jolliete Illinois to chicago it wont be our longest excursions but we will be running fast for those four trips, but we need to have the fuel storage shored up, and clear so we dont get bits of metal in the boiler of the engine itself that could be very bad, and we dont want her to leak. in a word restoring and running big steam is No Easy Day.

They don't have the resources Union Pacific has for 4014, so this restoration will take awhile.

KEVINSHARPE - 4014 is being constantly under reconstruction. It is supported by Union Pacific, not private funding. That job will be done correctly and for long term operation. When restoration projects run short of money, things do not get done as they should be.

In theory, yes. It would make the WMSRR look pretty foolish to buy an expensive locomotive and dump gallons of money and man power into its restoration only to find out they can't run it.

That may be the case, but it is a difficult procedure as the 1309 is a friction-bearing locomotive, weighs as much as 4 USRA 80 ton hoppers that were used during the 1309's career, and you have to adjust the reverser to be aligned with direction of travel. If anything is off, it won't end well.

Yes ,it will. They got this engine to eliminate the diesel helpers to help bring their running costs down. What would be the point of restoring it just to have a diesel pull it back down the hill.

It takes years to return a normal locomotive to operation this being a 2-6-6-2 that’s like having two engines in one so it’ll be another year or so

Alexander Gudschinsky By comparison to the engine the tender is rather easy work as your replacing late flat plates of steel and the work goes rather quickly Whereas working on the engine requires boiler work and suspension work rebuilding all the motion work honing out the Pistons and valves feed-water pumps feed-water heater superheater units if bad need to be fabricated new, in the days of steam you could simply order new superheater units. Those companies are long out of business but Strasberg railroad if I remember correctly will manufacture new superheater units for you as well as any other kind of steam engine work required.. To be totally honest I'd rather listen to the master mechanic tell us about work done and to be done. Then a front office type. I am a retired locomotive engineer with experience in straight electric, diesel-electric, mu cars 660dc/ 11000 volt AC 25 cycle single phase and 12500 volts 60 cycle single phase and steam locomotives from 2 foot, 3 foot, to standard gauge locomotive's last steam engine was AFT -1. And turbine hydraulic and turbine mechanical.

forgot to mention... I have heard it commented that today, we cannot actually figure out how to build one of the Saturn 5 rocket engines.... we understand how it works, but can't quite duplicate it...

@@DS-bi3fz Each one of those F1 engines were custom made. Eventhough they are the same engine, no two were alike. Changes were made to every succession of engine.

1309 isn’t a Yellowstone it’s a 2-6-6-2 mallet

There are no Yellowstones. All were scrapped. One was supposed to survive and go the b&o museum. But for some reason it was scrapped instead.

@@drby0788 There are actually three Yellowstones from the Duluth, Missabe and Iron Range that have survived.

Unless you’re an idiot, it doesn’t take much understanding, it’s called obsolescence. However that doesn’t stop people from restoring, running and appreciating antique cars, boats, aircraft and locomotives.
