Death by Bunjie

2 жыл бұрын

The Bunjie Family suffered an all-too-common hit lately: limb breakage. Bunjie, Jr., our Excalibur Micro Suppressor 355, gets new limbs. It was a battle. To start things off, because we are not the original owners of this crossbow, Excalibur did not cover it under warranty. They said they considered it "dry fired" (even though that never happened and it has an anti-dry fire so it shouldn't even be possible). $100.00 later and we had to install the new limbs without so much as instructions from Excalibur. And it went downhill from there. How does it end up? Watch the video.
Nonetheless, this channel is about my love of the crossbow, hunting, and the outdoors. I hunt exclusively with the crossbow. I love it and I aim to help you love it, too!

Now, I am not sponsored by anyone. I am a free agent. I experiement with different types of gear, but I'll tell you my honest opinion about everything out there. I am not sponsored by Excalibur or Scorpyd...read on:
Bunjie (The O.B.) is a 2010 Excalibur Axiom Crossbow. After a decade of killing deer, hogs, squirrels--you name it!--with the "stock" 20" Easton Firebolt arrows, Bunjie experimented with heavy arrows during 2020 but has since decided to hunt with 20" ProFlight arrows from Easton, for a total arrow weight of just under 400 grains when tipped with a 100 grain Rage Crossbow Hypodermic Broadhead. This keeps ol' Bunjie around 300fps. Is Bunjie retired as of 2021?
Bunjie, Jr., is my daughter Genevieve's crossbow, an Excalibur Micro Suppressor 355. She also shoots ProFlights (16.5" variety) with a 150 grain Rage Trypan Crossbow Broadhead, for a total arrow weight around 415 grains. This crossbow was a much appreciated gift from a Friend of Bunjie, and it changed Death by Bunjie forever by inspiring Genevieve to become a part of it as a second-generation crossbow hunter, and it also convinced me there is a benefit to a newer, faster crossbow (see our 2020 Maryland Doe Hunt).
Bunjie III (or Bunjie '21, Bunjie 3.0) is a 2021 Scorpyd Deathstalker, the result of trying various models and looking at dozens of them online for characteristics I liked. It is, in fact, another gift from a different Friend of Bunjie, which goes to show how important Friends of Bunjie are to this channel and what an impact they can have. Although I really liked what I saw online, I would not have even tried a Scorpyd given that no shops near me carried them. This was sent to me new, free of charge...with the only stipulation being that if I didn't like it, I would send it back to that FOB. After spending some time with it, I am convinced it is, in fact, the right crossbow for me in 2021, and I look forward to showcasing this crossbow in future videos.
So, I am not sponsored by these companies. I am sponsored by Friends of Bunjie! (I'm not asking for gifts whatsoever--please don't feel like you should send me stuff! But I do appreciate the support I've received over the years! I'm just trying to express my appreciation for that.)
Once again, this channel is about my love of the crossbow, hunting, and the outdoors. I hunt exclusively with the crossbow. I love it. Sure, like a lot of kids, I started hunting with a good ol' Model '94 Winchester .30-30 back in the 80's, but drifted away from hunting when I went off to college, law school, and started a family. As my daughter got older, I regained my interest in the outdoors, and I consider myself lucky to hunt on the same property today that I hunted on as a kid. I got the Excalibur Axiom crossbow in 2010 and I haven't looked back. This channel is the result of combining my interest in filming and hunting...
...and music, too! My related channel, Yankee Militia, showcases my music. Some of the music is hunting-related, so check that out, too! The soundtrack for this channel is provided by my band, so the two are intertwined. The albums "Live Free or Kill" and "Zombies Gotta Eat, Too!" are available on Amazon.com and elsewhere. A third album is in the works.
All Hail Bunjie!

Rich, years ago, I was fortunate to take a tour of Darton Archery in Hale, MI. I saw how they build their limbs and every finished limb was flexed a fixed distance in a machine that recorded how much force was required to flex it that far. That number was written on the end of the limb. Every bow requires limbs with matching numbers. Each bow's numbers may be slightly different from other bows but a specific bow's upper and lower limbs must match.

I had a limb failure on my Excal micro 360td, big splinter on it's right limb. It happened on the ninth day of the Michigan crossbow season, they had new limbs to me on the 13th day of the season, so I will say that there pretty fast at getting things out, although I'm lucky their service center is in Port Huron Michigan. And yes those limb anchor bolts were super tight, highly recommend using a set of high quality hex wrenchs. One last thing, the crossbow was still zeroed in with the new limbs. Both my limbs were labeled 69, insert Wayne's world meme.

Well I had cracks develop on my micro suppressor 400 TD. It should have TB instead of TD because If I could I would take back. What a joke putting them back on . The holes didn't align when I put the main bolt through . As I tightened it down I could hear the bolt crunching in the fiberglass . I took it back apart and the bolt cut some threads in the new limbs. Not major threads but you can see how it scored the glass. I also noticed the threads of the arrow hold down ,one of the tiny screws 's thread got ripped out some home . Had to fix that too and drill and tap a bigger screw to hold it to the scope riser underneath.I wonder how long till they crack too? What a pain . Loosing 5 days of my week of deer hunting too . Not a happy camper. I use to have an older excal and never any issues. .Those were the days.

Loctite 242 or 243 is what you want to use when you want to get something apart. Loctite 222 is what you want to use on your scope mounting screws. It's very low strength. I use Loctite 681 on things that I never want to come apart, but it will melt when heated to 400F and come apart..

@Deathbybunjie
@Deathbybunjie 9 ай бұрын
That Matrix 380 is, in my personal opinion, probably the pinnacle of Excalibur crossbows. I won't go so far as to say it's indestructible but that's a really good balance from them. I do believe they carry limbs for that still to this day and you might want to buy a set just to have on hand. I actually bought extra limbs for my old Axiom, can you believe it? Probably will never need them, fingers crossed. But it's good to have.

I thought I saw somewhere Excalibur announcing an improved magtip limb for their issues with the micro series. Regardless I would of thought limb replacement be much easier. I'm still partial to recurve crossbows. But agree this race for speed and smaller bows ( not even 100 fps but almost twice the draw weight) only to slow it with maybe heavier than manufactures suggested bolt weights. IDK can't have your cake and eat it too.

I had a Excalibur 335 and limbs went out in very few shots. Yes they replaced the limbs but like you said that isn't the point. I really wanted to like them, the thing shot great and I liked the simplicity of it, but it just didn't sit well with me where they just keep sending limbs out to replace failed ones. Too much speed and narrow limbs and the design is my guess. Ol' Bunjie still running strong which is great though. :)

None of the top popular compounds have this amount of breakage. All manufacturers have had limbs that have broken it's not just an Excalibur thing. I would rather change string and limbs myself at home instead of taking it to a bow shop and being down for weeks at a time and paying lots of money for the bow shop to do it.
@Deathbybunjie
@Deathbybunjie 2 жыл бұрын
Mission and Scorpyd do not have limb issues, at least nowhere near as widespread. Lower draw weights save limbs, just like the older Excaliburs.

Fake news Kurt... Blowtech has taken Excalibur to the top in limb issues just like Bowtech has the worst issues in the compound world. Its a bowtech problem. Sure some other companies have a few issues but not at the volume of bowtech and modern excaliburs

3:56 &deathbybunjie do you feel it’s necessary to change the cables on a crossbow every time the string is changed. Probably not right . Maybe get two or three seasons from the cables? Not really a lot of info out there that I see helpful.
@Deathbybunjie
@Deathbybunjie Жыл бұрын
Probably not, because usually changing the string has to do with the serving and as long as the servings on the cables and the cables themselves don't look bad then wouldn't be necessary in my opinion.

@@Deathbybunjie thank you yeah I thought the same thing. So I have a bear x intense cd crossbow so it’s super narrow and the string is at extreme angles at trigger device so my string servings tend to want to separate but very little just enough to bother me. But the cables look like day one honestly. Thanks for your input? Have you seen or shot the bear x intense cd crossbows.?

I’m actually replacing the string this year for the first time. It’s a 2020 edition bow so I figure probably time to replace string? I am buying a new string from sixtyx custom strings. They seem to be one of the best in the business as far as I hear? Sounds like it’s a slight improvement of the original string? Not quite sure thou??

That’s because barnett doesn’t let you work on them it has to be them for the warranty. Excalibur is simple and allows you to work on your crossbow. So they can send them out. One major plus of a recurve. And it’s lifetime too.

You would figure for the price of these crossbows , the limbs would be much better quality and more durable, why spend $1,500 just to replace the limbs after a few shots, seems like a big waste of money for something I was really looking forward to, until I started seeing all the broken limp videos
