The New Year’s Tournament was a nail biter all the way to the end. After the dust settled, it was Yokozuna Terunofuji who was the last man standing. With the triumph, the 32-year-old Yokozuna who was competing for the first time since July of last year was able to prove many people wrong, as they had doubts about his ability to perform at a high level again. Check out Terunofuji’s entire performance from the New Year’s Tournament and see how he rose to the occasion.

Hello and thank you so much for tuning in to SUMO PRIME TIME. It’s already February, and that means we’re all looking forward to the next grand tournament, the Spring Tournament in Osaka, which will take place in March. However, let’s take a moment to reflect on the just-concluded competition in Tokyo - the New Year’s Tournament. It was a nail-biter all the way to the end. After the dust settled, Yokozuna Terunofuji emerged as the last man standing. With this triumph, the 32-year-old Yokozuna, competing for the first time since July of last year, proved many doubters wrong about his ability to perform at a high level again. Check out Terunofuji’s entire performance from the New Year’s Tournament and witness how he rose to the occasion. Thank you always for supporting the channel, and we look forward to seeing all of you throughout the month of February, as we’ll be back with more features and updates. Arigato!!

Sure wish that somebody somewhere would've thought that a slow-mo replay of the feet touching out of bounds would've been of interest on the Yusho playoff bout. That was really close. No monoii and no replay of it would be weird if it were any other sport. Imagine if the game winning touchdown at the Superbowl was really close to being out of bounds, and they decided not to show replays of it....yeah. Weird.

@@chonqmonk That was a case of the dead body rule. Kotonowaka was in an entirely defensive position when Teru pushed him out, and helpless to stop his fall. The only reason he didn't touch clay first was that he was going over the edge and there was no clay to touch, just air.

Once Kotonowaka had won to get to 13-2 then Kirishima at 11-3 had nothing except pride to fight for. And pride only gets you so far when there's 175kgs of yokozuna glaring at you from the other side of the dohyo.

Once again we seen firsthand that Terunofuji at 75% is still better than any other rikishi fighting today! He exemplified this on day 15 when he tossed Kirishima out of the ring like a ragdoll! Kirishima is the number 2 ranked rikishi and Terunofuji absolutely diminated him! One more yusho and Terunofuji will have cemented his legacy into history! However if he wins 2 more yushos then he will have tied Yokozuna Akebono, who has 11 yushos as well! If Terunofuji wins 11 Yusho then he will be in the top 10 all time best Yokozuna! Behind Hakuho and Asashoryu he will be the 3rd best Mongolian Yokozuna all time!

The phoenix, out of the ashes, perseveres yet another Basho. There is nothing more that I'd like to see but Yokozuna Terunofuji Haruo win into double digits Yusho wins, cementing his name into history, where he belongs with the other great Yokozuna of my age, like Hakuho, Chiyonofuji, Asashoryu, Kitanoumi, Tananohana, Musashimaru and Akebono. This and Tamawashi's longevity in the dohyo, will be unfortunately the last feats of greatness I fear, that I will witness in my lifetime, past the domeneering Hakuho Sho era in Sumo. My humble prayers towards this purpose 🙏

Hopefully someone steps up to the challenge and guns for a Yokozuna spot. Teru cant hold the spot solo for too long, Yusho's don't have that much excitement when a Yokozuna is absent but unfortunately most of the rikishi's now dont have that intensity or aura like Hakuho or Teru has. Yokozuna is more of a title than a ranking. Once you attain it, demotion is not possible. You either perform as is expected of a Yokozuna, or you are forced to retire. If Teru had missed this basho there would've been serious talk of him having to retire on account of being too injured to perform. Now that he's shown he's not only healthy enough to perform at the expected level but straight up still capable of dominating a yusho, his leash is going to be that much longer.

The rule that should be changed is demoting rikishis for being injured (that, and get rid of Shini Tai).

Well why don't you talk with Sumo Association about that?

I'm glad to see Terunofuji returns to the dojo. Although, he won this basho, I feel like there're a lot of close fights which could impact his knee injury if this keep going on. Hakuho on the others hand survive longer than anyone I think because he won through better technique thus less damage on the body. Anyway, good luck to Terunofuji, I hope he will last long until there's another Yokozuna.
