From the Academy - Award winning film, The Revenant. The movie depicts life on the American continent where much of the western US was pretty much unconquered. French trappers and American scouts, military and frontiersmen had to be on the lookout against Native American tribes, some of whom were hostile and some not. In this scene, Hugh Glass (DiCaprio) is leading a group of trappers to Ft. Kiowa. While scouting game, Glass is attacked by a bear. This was such a terrifying scene to see in the theater because it looked so real and raw. Gotta hand it to DiCaprio for his acting prowess and Inarritu for directing. Where did they get that bear?

@@onetwo-gt2tr Bears do suck at killing swiftly and fast, plus he had thick clothing although we can see a part of his back shoulder skin torn by the bear's constant jaw tearing. Yes bears have a terrible reputation of eating prey alive and needlessly painfully unlike feline predators.

@@onetwo-gt2tr no they wouldn't? bear maulings can last a long time, this is super realistic. if you play dead they often leave, but if you move again they will continue the mauling. This is exactly what would happen, though injuries could obviously be worse

When I saw that question, would you rather be alone in the woods with a bear or a man? For a split second I had to think about this movie; that’s why I’m here watching the movie clip. But I’d still pick the bear in that hypothetical question. It would certainly be a horrible deadly experience if it happened, and the man may turn out to be a hero. But he could also stick me in his basement for 10 years and act like it’s all my fault. A bear would never do that. This is just a momma bear defending her cubs.

Playing dead to avoid a bear is an incredibly dangerous myth to belive in. Grizzlies are scavangers, meaning that if you play dead instead of fighting back you are slimming your chances of survival even more.

Hugh Glass must have been a very unique individual in that he had a very strong immune system and healing capabilities. Most individuals would have died within minutes or even hours from blood loss and infection.

It's stunning and amazing how Hugh Glass was able to survive such a vicious and brutal mauling while many of his comrades were so easily killed earlier by simple single arrow shots from the Indians. In this movie, vital organ penetration was key. By the same token that his comrades were so easily killed by single arrow shot, Hugh Glass was able to kill the1000 lb. Grizzly Bear with a few well placed knife stabs.

Humans (and most mammals) are both incredibly endurant, and yet quite fragile. We rely on a few key vital organs for survival and are able to survive despite heavy blood loss and extreme injuries to non-vital organs. But taking out a heart or damaging the brain is enough to put down most of us down. Hugh was lucky in his mauling because the deadliest blow he recieved (the claw swap to his neck) did not cut off his carotid artery nor his trachea otherwise he'd have died within minutes. My guess is that it had cut to the side of the neck where much less blood vessels remains.

Unless you hit it directly between the eyes and the bullet went directly into the brain you pretty much just pissed it off more and not even really hurt it immediately. We're talking probably 800-1200 pounds of ticked off carnivore. If it died 25 minutes later that would be 20 minutes late for you.

It wasn't. He shot it in the chest/shoulder. After it steps away for the second time you can clearly see the bear swaying and see its chest matted with blood. He hit an artery or something. It was dying. Just wasn't something that instantly dropped it.

That rifle he fired at it has ridiculous stopping power, there's a youtube channel that showed off the damage that very hunting rifle he used can do and it quite literally deleted the head off their 'realistic test dummy', that bear shouldn't have had any use out of that arm tbh. It's not impossible the blast would've scared it away or not, but that bear would have a massive CHUNK missing off it's shoulder.

The real Hugh Glass, whom this movie its based on, survived a vicious bear attack and i read his wounds were so sever that you could see his lungs from the back. He put maggots from the bear carcasass and from some rotten logs and that stop the bleeding and provide fast healing, he was left with horrific scars and died later in life, but from other reasons, not from the bear attack.

Not particularly realistic. Most bears kill their prey by driving their teeth through the skull. If you look at a bear's skull you'll see how well designed it is for this method of dispatching it's victims. It has huge k9s and Jaws that can encompass the heads of most prey animals, a human's would be no be no problem for a bear that size! I think in reality the fight would be over much sooner in most encounters!
