The rhythm you have with the dog in your life reflects the connectedness you have with your dog. Connectedness can be defined in the moments when things don’t go the way you expect. Rhythm can range from peaceful and easy through to chaotic and is part of all our relationships. We’re looking at how we can use everyday life to build a relationship of connection and trust with our dogs.
In the episode you'll hear:
• About the rhythm of all our relationships and conversations.
• How being grounded creates teamwork and connection with our puppy.
• Why to create a steady rhythm to your dog training sessions.
• About the importance of our puppies and dogs learning how to relax.
• What happens when things don't go the way we expect.
• How to recover your rhythm and questions to ask.
• What I do if my dog does not sit the first time on cue.
• Why the age and experience of our puppy or dog changes our rhythm.
• How I use music to match my dog's rhythm when walking an agility course.
• How we can create the rhythm of life for the connection we want.

I had never thought about it as a rhythm. My old dog that passed away last year, we knew each other well and we both knew how the other would react in almost every situation. We didn't need words. It was comforting to be so in tune with a dog and have such trust. Enter the new puppy this year. First puppy in 13 years. He has been here 5 months and is now 7 months old. His unique behavior problems and learning style there hasn't been any connection or rhythm. How to connect with him. Finally we have brief periods where we connect and then lose it and try again. I am having to learn a whole other life style of how to communicate with this guy and I thought I have had so many huskies over the years this would be a cake walk as I surely knew the breed. I have been taught things that I have never had to encounter before. Hoping we find a rhythm with each other soon. Thaks for the podcast.

This might be one of my favorite podcasts of yours ever. I’m not quite sure how I just stumbled on it, but it must’ve been meant to be. So helpful in my thinking on my puppy/dog and agility journey. Thank you!!

Awesome video, Susan. I had someone video me with my dog in the ring during rally class. I was quite amazed (she is a big dog, so maybe not surprising?) to see her walking in step with me, left foot, right foot, left foot...With my shoes and her white paw, it looked really cool. I was looking for music to add to the video, so yes, there IS rythm. Its just she isnt used to me being home without a consistent schedule, since some days I will be otherwise occupied. (Care-giver) It was different completely when I was working full time. Dog time was a strictly defined schedule. Now, not so much.

Thanks for the click! I find it very interesting that my first dog (as a very inexperienced dog owner at 20) I had the very best connection with. The more educated I get in dog training, the less connected I am with my dog. Help!

I would say, get out of your head a little bit :) follow your instincts more. Observe your pup just for the sake of observation, without judgement or worry - just accept the dog for who he/she is in those moments. There is so much information on dog training, it can be overwhelming, especially when you want to know everything yesterday (like me! lol). Maybe you re putting too much on your dog - go back to the feeling of what feeling connected with your dog was like. Remember that life is supposed to be fun :) it's lovely that you are looking to do what is best for you and your dog - maybe relax and enjoy a bit more? Within you all the well :)

Susan, can you share the kinds of music you pair with each dog? I'm sure it will seem obvious once I hear/see the pairing but right now my mind is bouncing around trying to come up with options. Also - what music do you play when training vs. relaxing? Thanks!
