I got mine at the end of last year and I'm absolutely loving it. I sold my Fuji X100F for it, because I wanted a small camera with good image quality (at least aps-c) to carry around with me all the time. The X100F was just a little too big for that. The Ricoh on the other hand always stays in my pocket no matter what. I never had problems with battery life either - I have 2 spare batteries and never had a day where I drained all 3. An absolute gamechanger for me was the image stabilization of the sensor. Coming from the Fuji which didn't had that, I must say, it's absolutely amazing. Low light isn't really an issue anymore, because I can just shoot at 1/30 and f2.8. That's another thing that amazes me about this camera - it's tack sharp, even wide open at f2.8. I almost always use the 'positive film' effect. You could even apply it to the raw files via lightroom. I'm probably getting the griiix as well - I'm just waiting on a new colour or edition to come out (like the diary edition for the normal griii).

I love my Ricoh GRIIx! One thing you didn't mention is the handy depth of field gauge. It comes in handy for knowing where hyperfocal is set. Even in manual focus you can tap to focus which will set your manual focus distance. Also, you can actually set the display button on the back to toggle on and off the screen. This will save you on battery life and on actuating the lens. I've never actually counted the number of shots I got, but by having the screen off while I'm walking I would probably end up with at least 30% more shots per battery. Credit to Lucas from EYExplore for sharing that tip.

3:34, did you say it has a fairly small sensor? Unless you're used to medium or large format, APS size sensor is not small. No other compact camera that can fit in your front pants pocket has an APS sensor (that I know of). Yea, battery life isn't great, but you should be getting at closer to 200 shots per battery. You do have to turn off the camera when you're not using it, the startup time is quite quick (less than 1 second).

Take the time to let the camera grow on you. My initial observations and experiences with the GR3x were similar... I use it as my everyday snapper, not bothered by the missing viewfinder or lack of flip screen. Battery life for everyday is great, for entire day shooting you need additional batteries. I love the image quality and the fact that you can take it anywhere. Be careful for dust on the lens

I bought one a few weeks ago, there are a lot of hidden usability features that I think all cameras should have. Even just Snap Distance Priority mode is a game changer. It's easily the fastest camera I have ever used in terms of adaptability. The Product and UX designers really deserve a raise. Also the quality is insane. I have been shooting Fujifilm for about 7 years, thinking that they were the peak of aps-c image quality. Ricoh here is astronomical.

For me its all about having a dedicated camera on you at all times, which this provides. A pocketable 24MP camera. What stops me from everyday shooting is having to haul around my MUCH more expensive and weighty full frame Sony camera + lenses. The setbacks of poor battery and no flip out screen make this camera investment still worth it for the ability to keep sharp as a photographer by getting shots in on the daily.

I get 300-500+ shots per battery. You just need to turn the camera off in between shots. Keeping it on drains the battery because the sensor motors draw a lot of power to keep it aligned. When the camera is off, you can hear the sensor knock around if you shake the camera.

It does have a minimum shutter speed setting. You need to spend more time with this camera. It's a very powerful machine and much better at producing SOOC images than Sony. (I owned 4 Sony cameras and the jpg output is very limited). If you only shoot RAW, then that's not an issue, but I think the Ricohs have some of the best Monochrome output of any camera manufacturer ... and... the sensor is so good, you can shoot Infrared without removing the cut-filter from the sensor. Batteries are small and easily carried, so just get get more (imagine if you were shooting film :). Third party batteries are fine. I have 5 batteries I share between the GRiii and the GRiiix. Get a cover to keep the dust off. The GC-10 and GC-12 are best. The rear dial needs to be protected from dust. I prefer to shoot on Aperture Priority or Manual with auto ISO and a minimum shutter speed set (which I lower for night scenes). This way, I don't adjust the ISO very often and I don't have to use the back dial. In full manual you will have the ISO setting on the back dial, and it will be a problem if you get dust on the contacts. Dust on the sensor can be an issue for any camera, but it's a bigger problem for fixed lens cameras because it's not easy to clean. If you do get dust on your sensor, just shoot at F8 or below that and it won't be visible. I've been using Ricohs since 2019 and haven't had any dust issues. There are many features these little cameras do better than everyone else and some things that are not so great. Not because they're poorly designed though. They're not great at things they were never intended to be used for. Pro sports photography, wildlife photography, videography . I've owned Fuji, Panasonic, and Sony cameras, all with several lenses, and none of those can compete with and beat the Ricoh at its own game.

Some great comments on the GR user experience... thought I'd run it through Google Translation for other viewers... 😊 Pierre, thank you for this video which describes the GR well, I want to say, the GR's, because the GR III and the IIIx are exactly the same devices apart from the focal length of the optics which differs between them. As for the batteries, I take more than 300 photos per battery, but for that, I shoot in "single" and I turn off the GR as soon as I'm not using it. Must say that it is almost instantly ready (well under a second to wake up) and therefore, this is not a problem. As a result, it often happens that I do an entire day with a single battery. And then, the price of the batteries, which we find on Amazon, is frankly not very high and suddenly, you just need to have 4 or 5 in your pocket to shoot intensely! As for the settings that seem to have disappeared, you have the possibility of setting up to 6 user profiles via the U1, U2 and U3 positions on the top wheel... which gives you always - very quickly - your settings at hand depending on what you want… Yes, the snap function is so great (a sort of automated focusing zone) that it should be implemented in all cameras, and especially cameras intended for street photography! You forgot (where I may not have listened carefully enough) to talk about the IBIS (stabilization) which is integrated into the device… This IBIS works wonderfully and allows me to shoot at speeds of ultra low shutter without motion blur. Also, the fact that it does not have a viewfinder to integrate taught me to photograph differently and to develop more creativity! Especially since the screen is great and ultra-responsive on the tactile level. Yes, you are right, too bad it is not adjustable, like that of the new Leica Q3. I am, moreover, Fujiste (X-T4 and X-Pro), and since I have a GR III to which I added the GR IIIx - I have become a fan! - my Fuji's hardly come out anymore, except for video or specific work that requires specific lenses. The optics of the GR are really marvelous in quality, and what sharpness - much more than the optics that equip the Fuji X100V... This small box, so compact that it fits in the pocket of my shirt or my jeans, is often also in the bag of the Leicaists, precisely because of the optical quality that it Thanks again to you for your always very interesting videos. Good for you! I would also add that the dynamics of the raw files is superb and especially the .dng produced are super easy to process, much easier than the raw (raf) Fuji from the xtrans sensor... Also, the colorimetry of the simulations (configurable) pleases much better - in the end - than those produced by my Fuji's! So I shoot in raw + jpeg and often use the color files from the jpeg! In fact, it is according to the need and the level of requirement desired. Also, a minimum shutter speed is perfectly configurable in ISO Auto... and even better than that, by activating the "Auto EV correction" function which allows the GR to modify the Av/Tv value automatically to maintain a correct exposure ( few people are familiar with this function), which means that if a minimum expo speed is selected via the ISO Auto function, the camera is able to override this minimum speed to lower it and ensure a good expo. This is an incredibly effective automatism in the event of a sudden change in light! There are plenty of other subtleties on board the GR... to discover them, you need much more time to have it in your hands and use it more intensively. But, frankly, it's a gem! Ah yes, I also forgot the superb quality of the lens in "macro" function which allows really very nice things!

@@elliotresnick5433 It's so simple! I use 85% of the GR III with its 28mm equivalent focal length, and 15% of the GR IIIx, mainly for portraits or to isolate subjects. But don't forget that the choice of focal length is subjective. It depends on the way you look at things, the way you see things photographically. The 28mm lets me get very close to people and get a dynamic image, whereas the 40mm will have a much more "classic look"... It's up to you to decide what suits you best.

I went for a weekend away so decided to take just that. Give it all my focus and not be distracted by my other gear. Best thing I ever did. I still agree its not the best, but what is. My main worry, as with 100v, is the fixed lens. Restrictive at times but forces you to think in other situations. I luckily came across a good priced second hand sony rx100iv. I thought my answers were met. I tend to be out more in the country, not in built up areas. Although an amazing edc, I still turn to the gr more. The GR III is the smallest camera with APS-C image quality. It is uncompromisingly designed for this (fixed screen, no viewfinder, small battery, fixed focal length). You can always have it with you in your pants or jacket pocket. I like that. My GR III has a quirk in colder temperatures of not saving photos taken after it's turned on. After a warm-up period, it then works without error. I suspect the design heat dissipation from the inside to the outside is also a cold introduction from the outside to the inside.

I have both Ricoh and Fujifilm and have been shooting jpeg only for about 7 years now. I think the baked-in Fujifilm looks are cool, but there is no option to turn them off without raw. You also don't have as many in-camera jpeg options with Fujifilm as you do with Canon, Sony, Ricoh respectively. So Fujifilm is the only brand where you are truly stuck with their looks only in-camera. I only like Velvia, Pro Neg H, and Astia. So I have a look, and I don't really care if it's mine or not. It became mine or representative of me with time, much like an old worn-in t-shirt. As for whether that's good or not is up to whether you like Fujifilm's aesthetic choices. I generally do not. After shooting Fujifilm for 7 years, I have been so happy with my Ricoh jpeg output. I don't have to fight it, or figure out which profile is the right hue for leaves, skin, or sky, because none will do all three. My Ricoh images just look normal in terms of colour and tone, but the texture is more "filmic" in my opinion. I feel more like I'm shooting my old Nikon F3 when I see my Ricoh images compared to any of the Fujifilm looks. To me Fujifilm is great for many things, but I don't think I would recommend them to anyone looking for an A camera - even though it's exactly what I did almost a decade ago. Fujifilm is a fun B camera, like Leica. They are in the same category for me. One is just 1/5th the price and has autofocus, the other full frame and a true range finder.

The way I see it, there's zero excuse to not shoot RAW+Jpeg. Hard drives are dirt cheap these days. A 12TB WD Red Pro is only $250 or something. The jpegs if you want to use them are basically like film lab scans. The RAWs are your negatives. You don't throw away negatives when sending film to the lab. So why would you throw away RAWs when shooting on digital? Just keep both.

Results wise grIII seems better on snap focused shots i.e. easier to use. Extra lens caps should be bought separately in order to prevent dust getting into the lens. These cameras are not weather proof at this price range ! Hence they are for good weather only and also one should be carefull with them due to fragility. I have never used the internalrecipes or sims, always used lightroom with nik collection and nik film simulations. Cameras have a 2 GB internal memory which may be of critical benefit when need arises. Rgds.

Thanks Simon!! Interesting you swapped the X100v - what was the main reason for you? The phones can’t replace that camera yet but I’m speaking just for my and my usage - I’d either rather have a bigger camera with a FF or aps-c f1.8/2.8 or just my phone nowadays. But damn it was super fun to use and loved the b&w built in!

No one ever came with such a ratio of quality and portability than the GR's, I got a GR II, X70 and Rx1R II and already the X70, for appealing it is, is twice the weight than the GR, and bulkier. Not as an X100, but still. And the Rx with its lens size, it's anything but pocketable, or light on the hip when hooked to your belt loop. And only the GR III's have IS among those I mentioned. No, there's a lot of pros for the IIIs...

I sold my GR II after it froze multiple times on me. Also, it was annoying that dust gets sucked in while lens close and gets on sensor. I am very happy with my fujifilm x70 now. Flippy screen is really useful.

@rockyBalboa6699 Жыл бұрын
You are really wrong about this Wonderful GR camera. You can take atleast 180 pictures on single battery unless you are leaving the screen on between shots. Also Flip screen is not a requirement to be a good camera, most high end cameras don't have flipscreens. There is no other camera in the GR3 price range to qualify as it's replacement. Just spend $80 and get a spare battery!

I typically average 400-500 shots per battery when traveling with my GR3. I typically only turn on the camera when I want to take a photo, then turn it off right away. The only time I have the camera on when not actively taking a photo is to occasionally review a photo.

I have em both and was expecting less. So i am very very impressed. The camera is very fast and the ibis works super good. 1/40th vs 1/125th on my x100 for sharp photos also means a lower ISO for the ricoh . I bought the griiiX first and its tight in some situations (noticeably tighter than the 35mm x100) and no flash has forced me to take pictures with a different approach

I’m very pleased with my Ricoh GRiiix but frustrated by the Highlight Weighted metering mode. Compared to my other (full frame) camera, the default setting comes out far too dark, so I end up using Exposure Compensation to adjust and still maintain the Highlights….in practice I’m now finding it easier just to use the EP button. Can the default Highlight Weighted metering mode be adjusted?….I’ve not found an option for that. Any advice would be appreciated please - Thanks
@JP1050x
@JP1050x 3 ай бұрын
If you shoot with the positive film simulation, the effect of preserving highlights will be more obvious. So try different color profiles. The dynamic range can be a little limiting with GR cameras. Even with shooting raw. So it might be beneficial to underexpose and bring up exposure in post processing. For positive film, I typically have to bring up exposure and shadows by 1/3 to 1 full stop.

I solve a problem with poor battery life. I bought an external charger and use it with power bank. I use one battery and keep second in my jacket pocket inside of the charger. With a small pawerbank like 5000mAh you're able to be all day on the street. With a short cable it doesn't take too much space in the pocket.

I want to love this camera, but in my experience it was just too unreliable. There are weird hardware and software hiccups. Sometimes it would say after a few shots that the memory card was unreadable, but if I took the battery out it fixed the issue. Just weird stuff like that. I thought I had a defective unit, exchanged it for another one, and the same problem. For that price, you really want the camera to work reliably. It's a cool camera and fun to use though. It just doesn't inspire much confidence.
