@@jackshittle I agree. Because there wasn't any kids bringing guns to school and blasting each other in, "Little House on the Prairie" or on "Bonanza", Happy Days or the Brady Bunch. How many episodes of school shootings were talked about on Good Times or on the Jeffersons, All in the Family? None. School shootings weren't going on in 1905, 1940s, 1960s, 1950s, even in the 1980s. School shootings were unheard of in the 50s and 60s. In the 1980s kids were too busy watching Saturday morning cartoons. Gun laws were more lenient back then. But traditional values were still the law of the land.

What sort of man invites himself into another mans home, kills a chicken without asking, gets his host to cook the bird, eats it all, then accuses him of being a coward. This character is a knob.

@@rickchand1 It's easy for people like you, to criticize a show like this and make comments like, "a man in a cheap bear suit", than to simply sit back and enjoy a wonderful show with a great story. People like you, love to poke holes and make fun of classics like; The Wizard of Oz, The Riflemen, Star Wars and so many other classic movies and TV shows. Because it gives you a feeling of superioty. Take some time to sit back and smell the roses, every ounce in a while. Show some class and respect, Because, a lot of hard work went into producing a show like this. And, do some research into that 'so called "cheap bear suit" and you'll realize it wasn't so cheap after all.

I used watch this series at 4.00 pm after getting home from 5th grade. Absolutely loved it, and my favourite rifle to this dayis my much revered 30-30 94 model. I cast my mind back to when first watching this particular episode as a youngster and remember I was disappointed that McCain put a few shots into the bear in a fruitless attempt to save the embittered and valueless old dog. Watching this same episode decades later I amstill disappointed. The bear should have been left with her quarry to feed her three cubs...

I liked The Rifleman as a kid yet LOVED it as an adult. Hollywood could be tough yet I can't imagine growing up without movies & TV in the 60s. LOADS of values, morals and ethics in the storylines. Chuck Connors was fantastic as the Rifleman and I was in-love with Johnny Crawford as Mark McCain. I'm a vain progressive that grew up more on Rock & Roll and a vegetarian that LOVED animals and became Vegan 10 years now yet still LOVE watching The Rifleman on MeTV. Yet there's NO need to eat animals in these times to get protein. People have Sanctuaries these days and don't want Factory Farming of animals. The BEST line in this Episode begins at timeline 11:10......to 12:08. NO WHOLE SALE OF ANIMALS. Right On!! The so called "Hunters" wiped out so many species. Capitalism at it's worst in GREED for the fur trade. Bloody almost wiped out Buffalo forever! And the Eco-system suffered too. Foolish men and their greed. RIP Chuck Connors, died at age 71 from lung cancer and pneumonia. JOHN ANDERSON WAS ALWAYS BRILLAINT AS AN ACTOR! He died at the age of 70. He was in Gunsmoke a lot. Love the OLD CLASSICS of Bonanza too! 60s TV was the BEST, the 70s too! So much heart disease & cancer! Vegan and 61 and hope to live to 101. Wish great actors & musicians were ALL vegan! Gotta exercise at least 3 times a week too. RIP GREAT STARS! SO many greats die too soon. xox

Actor John Anderson has appeared here on The Rifleman more times than I can count. He made so many appearances on other television programs during the 1960's. My personal favorite was seeing him on the Twilight Zone episode called A Passage for Trumpet where he played the angel Gabriel when he co-starred with Jack Klugman. I guess you never know who might be waiting for you at the Gates of Eden. In this case it better not be an angry black bear named Ben - LOL !

Good show, i wonder if they packed the bear meat out? This really was the turn of the age when the new society was at the end of pushing all the old timers and gun-fighting ways out...great show!! I was born in the twenties way before this show ran, but i did get in a little on how this kinda of happened in real life even though it was fully before my time!! I do remember (but did not see it as i was at home in bed) when our town bank got robbed by robbers on horses with guns strapped on and our railroad also got robbed that way. Our town was dirt roads and horses, i sure do miss them days as a child, everything was so much better for the kids than today's world!

I've never been the biggest fan of western themed tv shows but in my opinion the Rifleman is the best tv western show ever. Unlike the pther western tv shows Chuck Connors was actually doing everything you see him doing, no fake stuff. Not only could he handle a rifle like in the show but that was actually his own personal rifle. I understand that some time ago that rifle was auctioned off for somewhere in the six figures. Alot of people may not know this but at 6"6" he also played some college basketball.

I used to watch this show as a kid. This episode set's up an interesting dichotomy between the two men which kind of mirrored the "generation gap" of the Sixties. My only small criticism was how the ending played out.I won't give anything away but let's just say I don't think a genuine Frontiersman would have wound up in that situation.Still a great memory of the 1960s. I remember watching this series as a kid and liked it, but this one is anachronistic in that the story line doesn't match the times it's supposed to take place in. A kid the boy's age, even in the 40s much less in the 1800s, would have already killed hundreds of chickens himself, since it would have been his job to kill one for Sunday dinner after church. That's 52 chickens a year, so he wouldn't have been in the least shocked by the man killing one. Also, the American bison was killed in part to starve the western plains Indians, not just for money and the period of buffalo hunters was short, just as the period of the "mountain man" was only about 20 years, if that. Ranchers at the time were not exactly anti hunting and still aren't to this day. But even then most hunters only killed what they ate with a few exceptions, like predators. All the way up into the 40s the federal government had bounties on just about all predators, including eagles and bears. Very little about this story makes sense. Fortunately, most of the rest of them were better. The shooting on these shows isn't realistic at all, but that goes without saying.

Damn, Father Knows Best dipped in scalded tone of Twilight Zone. I'd forgotten how dark this series was, or how good an ex-basketball player could be in the lead role. Surprised the censors let the production hang the kid from a tree, very fetishistic... or maybe that's just me. Hmm, anyhoo... a full grown black bear killed by that little winchester, shot from the hip and at that distance...? Oh, why nit pick, this show holds up as well as The Fugitive after all these years! His entire life's savings have been gobbled up by doctors & now by this Alzheimer's Care Center, leaving him penniless. 😖😢😪😥😱 Medicare & Medi-gap cover only the 1st 180 days of residential care, not long-term care, which is now required by Johnny's diagnosis & prognosis. It becomes the financial responsibility of the Patient & spouse to pay for EVERYTHING after the 180 day limit has been exceeded. A fan created a "Go Fund Me" account on FaceBook for donations for Johnny's continued care. Just type in "Johnny Crawford 'Go Fund Me' " on FaceBook if you would like to donate at least once toward Johnny's on-going care. Bless his heart. I had a little-girl crush on little Johnny Crawford. Still do, after all these years. God bless all who read this & decide to make a donation.

In the opening credits and at least some episodes Chuck shoots right handed but mostly he blasts the bad guys left handed. What is up with that?

Rifleman. Hunter. Buffalo Hunter! Hunt what buffalo? The buffalo herds ran by the hundreds. The Indians killed a, a, a, buffalo to eat, for warm clothing, for a warm rug on the ground inside the tee pee, for a blanket, to make a tee pee. That type of creep shot up the running herd of buffalo just to have fun. His karma, STARVATION IN THE WILD FRONTIER. YES! THE WORD OF GOD!

Odd that the mountain man didn't even raise his rifle. I think the ending was pretty lame. The MM should have shot the bear, then Lucas spared the MM.

I thought it was unlikely a M.M. wouldn't have known a bear was there, like they made it in the story. I think a M.M. would probably be the first one to sense a bear is around.

He couldn't kick Clints Ass with a posse, also let's not pit to great American Western icons against each other and say Clint, Connors, & Wayne would have rode together and fixed right any smart Ass two bit gun slingers & the like to push up daisies. After all you don't compare a Hattorie Hanson sword to another Hanso sword, you compare it to every other sword in the world.
