The Right Stuff: 30th Anniversary is available on Blu-ray 11/5/13 at WBshop.com bit.ly/RS30WBShop
The time was the late 1940s. World War II had just ended and the United States was entering into a new kind of war, a Cold War. New technology and the development of high-speed aircraft became one of the centerpieces of this new kind of conflict. The race to space between the United States and the Soviet Union had just begun. Adapted from Tom Wolfe's best-selling book, The Right Stuff tells the heroic story of Chuck Yeager (the first person to fly faster than the speed of sound), the Flying Fraternity and the Mercury Astronauts -- the first Americans in space. The bravery and daring exploits of these men captured the imagination of the American public during the 1940s and 1950s, and The Right Stuff re-creates these breathtaking events in emotionally riveting and suspenseful detail.

I enjoy that the editing makes it look like they all went out to the range for the day and blew up a dozen or so rockets.

For my dad in his youth, that would've been a day well spent! Granted, his rockets were significantly smaller.

1:08 - It starts off with an Atlas rocket launch, then cuts to a Juno II failure. How did this get the Best Film Editing Oscar again?

Let's face it, not many people knows about rockets. All they care is that they go up. I assure you, the idiots at the oscars couldn't care less about the rocket continuity.

"Today I will multiply my value a hundredfold....In setting my goals I will consider my best performance of the past and multiply it a hundredfold. This will be the standard by which I will live in the future. Never will I be of concern that my goals are too high for is it not better to aim my spear at the moon and strike only an eagle than to aim my spear at the eagle and strike only a rock?" --from Og Mandino's 8th Scroll found in The Greatest Salesman In The World.

What has been happening in the 2010s with the launch fails is like a repeat of what was going on with NASA in the early 1960s. What would probably be more foolproof would be something more such as a space elevator as depicted in Arthur C Clarke's science fiction novel: The Fountains of Paradise. The space lift, as elaborated on in the book, would be composed of a sort of crystal based fibre. As daunting a challenge it may be to achieve having a space elevator transport link in service, such a piece of space transportation infrastructure would be far more efficient, and definitely safer, than relying on hydrogen fueled space rockets. : )
