OSCAR WINNER:Best EditingBest ScoreBest SoundBest Sound EffectsIn the middle of the 20th century, America pondered its future -- and looked to the skies. Based on Tom Wolfe's book, The Right Stuff is the tale of how that future began, a thrilling epic of intrepid test pilot Chuck Yeager and the seven pioneering astronauts of the Project Mercury space program. Nominated for eight Academy Awards, including "Best Picture," Philip Kaufman scripts and directs, pushing the envelope with a filmmaking bravado that matches this soaring story of training and heroism; and of sudden fame for which there is no training. Ed Harris, Barbara Hershey, Sam Shepard, Dennis Quaid and Fred Ward are among the perfect cast of this winner of four Academy Awards that remains the stuff of must-see entertainment. Let's light this candle, flyboys!

Lyndon Johnson learned days later about Mrs. Glenn’s speech impediment. He sent a personal telegram to her apologizing for making her feel pressured in any way, Lady Bird Johnson then made a very quiet trip to visit Annie Glenn and the two ladies became fast friends. Mrs. Johnson never mentioned the stuttering issue in any public forum, ever. When our leaders, and their wives, had class and dignity.

The story about this was that after John Glenn backed up his wife in not allow Vice President Johnson into the home, Chris Kraft, the boss, said that he was thinking of replacing john Glenn on this flight. He was told by his subordinates that if he did this was the one issue that the astronauts would come together as a brick wall against him and would refuse to fly. Then the matter would be turned over to President Kennedy. Chris Kraft was told that if Kennedy had to choice between a nameless government bureaucrat or the 7 hero astronauts, then he would lose big time. So he backed off in replacing Glenn.

Funny you should say he wasn't "dirty enough", since he was a member of the infamous Keating Five. He was an excellent Marine, a good husband, a superb pilot, and a brave astronaut. But as a senator his record wasn't stellar, no pun intended. People here in Ohio kept returning him to the Senate mostly because he was this larger than life figure. The Keating Five episode tarnished his reputation somewhat, though he continued to be a loyal Democrat in the Senate until he left office after the 1998 elections.

Still can’t believe this movie lost the Oscar for best picture to “Terms of endearment.” What a travesty. Both Siskel and Ebert rated it as the number one film of 1983 on their top 10 list of movies that year.

The liason dude had the perfect smarmy toothy smile. It screamed of insincerity. Some of the lesser roles had the best casting in this magnificent film.

Rob Schmidt Human Nature, Imo. The wives and families were put through a lot. Moving around from military housing here and there, their husband takes what's supposed to be a really good job for astronaut, they get homes and Furnishings, I don't doubt that they're suspicious of everybody waiting to see if there's a catch.

@snipe69 That happened a lot back then, as people didn't know a whole lot about the human mind. I mean, this was back when people with autism would get placed in mental institutions.

@aussiebear22 they're always political, because there will always be people who hate them. you know, the same people who think that right to work states are the way to go. all that means is, a right-to-work for the lowest wage.

Plen122 Yes, they are. They commit more terrorism on a yearly basis than Al-Qaeda ever did. They beat up people in wheelchairs, throw Molotov cocktails through windows, shoot at people, and assault people who can’t afford to strike. Unions are no better than the Gestapo, and are simply government-approved organized crime. Right-to-work is the way to go. Not only is unionization optional, but contrary to your left-wing propaganda, RTW states pay their employees very well (I’m making three times what used to) and employees have more rights. I hope President Trump uses the Green Berets on SEIU next year.

A lot of people think that they can do whatever they want especially those in a position of power, but when someone stands up to them they usually get mad and try to change the rules. They are nothing more than bullies. I hate bullies!
