I didn’t know anything about parts pairing as an issue within right to repair. I’ve run into this problem with my work computer. I have a Microsoft Surface through work, and our IT desk swapped out the battery between my computer and another Surface they had when I needed a new battery. Exact same part for the exact same computer. Ever since then, I get periodic popups saying that I may not have a genuine Microsoft part in my computer and it may affect performance. Now I know why it says that even though it is a genuine Microsoft part!

I changed my router last week and Netflix hit me with the password sharing BS. I 100% had a "do I really need this?" moment. I realized then if I was the only one who used it the answer would have been no. This is something I wonder if the streaming services are fully taking into account. By balkanizing families into their own accounts it also makes the cost of canceling lower. If Streaming services long term strategy is more low-cost ad-based accounts, that could really blow up in their face.

Lowkey, why does the verge never mention repairability or factor it into their reviews? Like after the fair phone came out every phone is straight up malicious.

It’s complicated. No, seriously, it’s really complicated. The largest reason is probably just the fact that most people, when buying a new device, are mainly interested in the experience of owning that device, rather than the experience of breaking it. Those interested in the latter won’t rely on a blurb in a Verge review, and frankly they shouldn’t. If you have ever read or watched one of iFixIt’s repairability reviews it’s a HUGE in-depth subject, and summing it up in a couple sentences really wouldn’t be good journalism.

@@TheOfficialOriginalChad also verge doesn't have the expertise to do it properly. Also I can't imagine companies giving out review phones and then expecting reviewers to do teardowns.

I'm more into the Fun to Repair stuff: anything made before 2010, as your guest at 28:30 explains. I love my car with bare bones software. I love throuh-hole PCB's and lead solder. I love the degauss sound of a CRT.

Louis Rossman did also a video about Roku Tv's that offer an update that only has a "Agree" button and not else in that update pop-up , so without consent if i have a tv from them i have 2 options : agree without consent to use my appliance as entended or disagree and throw the Tv out because without the update you can never use your TV at all .Sketchy things for sure .

Surprisingly, I'm okay with software pairing with hardware. My wife had her iPhone stolen while traveling after they broke into our car. It's nice to know they can't sell parts from that iPhone very easily.

That's a good point, but the same result could be accomplished in a different way. For example, suppose when you buy a new iPhone, your Apple account is linked to the serial numbers of the different components in your iPhone. If you sell your phone to someone else, you remove that phone from your Apple ID, and those components are unlinked from your account. But if your iPhone is stolen, you report it as such, and if any of those components show up in a different phone, Apple will recognize the serial number, lock the affected devices, and report it as stolen.

I have no problem with someone taking the horrible effort to sell parts on eBay for some pocket change from your 200$ phone. O wait, it wasn't 200$? OMG you paid more for a phone? Guess why the price is so high.... it is just exactly because of the locked ecosystem you pay 1000$ apple tax for a product that is 200$ in parts.

lol the most dangerous thing I own is my car. Someone please argue that replacing your own brake pads on a vehicle capable of killing and entire school bus of children is less dangerous than the battery in your phone…
