I completely agree the customization aspect of collecting add so much more fun to it. Barbie literally has endless skin tones , face mold, and body types to swap from repaint to really make your own. That’s truly fun in my collecting experience because my collection is truthfully my own world I create

"There are a lot of doll collector's out there who aren't creative people, and it shows." this was a very elegant way of making your point. To put it simply, doll people are weird. We're very protective of the things we collect because Dolls in themselves have so much to project onto. I think MIB , NIB, vs used or out of box collectors all have different views of how doll collecting should be and if dolls are really for kids. Modern Barbie collectors, specifically, have been given varying quality but an incredible amount of range and several decades of kinds of dolls to build a 'portfolio' of a collection. Being able to say "I like this doll, but I would like her better with some personalized touched" and be able to express yourself artistically and sometimes even narratively says so much about Barbie as a brand. This can be accomplished with other dolls, certainly, but Barbie continues to promote handling and play even beyond customization.

The redhead doll is a reproduction of a 1967-1968 Barbie With Twist 'N Turn Waist wearing the fall 1968 fashion "Smasheroo". There were two variants of this repro, one with brunette hair and one with red hair, which is the more uncommon of the two. The bangs are intentionally 'crooked', they are supposed to be swept to the right side, the original vintage Twist 'N Turn Barbie doll's bangs are actually more curved when they are in original condition, and often will retain a bit of that curve even when played with. If you look at vintage toy commercials for Twist 'N Turn Barbie, you can see what the original doll was intended to look like. The first Drew doll was I believe the early 2000s Mystery Squad Drew, who used the Generation Girl Tori face sculpt.

I collect early 2000s Barbie clothing slowly, as I find it here and there thrifting. I love it. I love Myscene too. Appart from Fashionistas, early 2000s is my area for Barbie. The clothes are so good and remind me of my young days. The red head Barbie has a gorgeous face, and her floral shirt under the monkey seems very promising to ad to the casual outfits closet ;)

I do that with my dolls as well. I also like to thrift older dolls and re-body them on to MTM bodies because some of the older bodies start to become discolored. Love what you did with your dolls.

Here in NZ, i experience the same unless I go 2 the small towns. Thrifting likely leads 2 crusty playline dolls. Of course, op shops r 4 local shopping & Barbie is US-American. Unfortunately, that means getting a nice barbie means paying more 4 something cheap.

Americans have it really good. 8$ fashionistas! So cheap. On the other hand in Europe, the second hand market doesn't go as crazy as doll collecting is a bit more niche

It’s such a surreal feeling finding a fashion fever doll at a thrift or swapmeet! I’ve been lucky enough to find many (thank the doll gods). I once found the Tia doll with the mono green outfit at the thrift store. And went back a couple days later because I wanted to see what else they had and lo and behold I found 5 other ff dolls! Including the Ibiza drew doll from the United Colors or Benetton! It literally felt like I was in a dream lol. I love watching your doll videos because we both have interest in the same dolls! I was eyeing your dolls in the background there, and would love to see a doll collection video!

I live in a city with 50-11 Goodwills and I stop to look for Barbies every-time I pass one. Some locations sale naked beat up Barbies for $3.99, meanwhile new Fashionistas are $4.99 at Ross. But I did find a fully cloth Extra at another location for $1.99 this week, felt like I won the lotto.😂

You need to keep Francie. She’s my favorite sculpt of all time. She was originally only made for 10 years from 1965 to 1975. The fashion is called Gad about. If you do give her away, give her to a good friend. The TNT repro is wearing Smasheroo. You definitely are a master thrifter. I love your dolls with fros.

Have you ever heard of Tyler Wentworth ? 16 inch tall dolls designed by Robert Tonner . there is a Trunk set exclusive to as store called Corbett's Collectables . The trunk is covered in leopard print fabric and comes with matching doll size luggage and several items of clothing to mix & match and a doll . Originally it was supposed to come with a white Tyler with reddish blonde curly hair and since i bought mine directly from Corbett's i asked if they could substitute a black doll because i felt the clothes in the set would look better on a black doll and they did it for me . including a Esme doll (black friend of Tyler )

I really agree with what you were saying about how fun being a Barbie Collector is. As much as I give Barbie crap, it's because it's still my favorite doll to collect. Even modern Barbie has a lot of great dolls. Idk I just want think that Barbie's really translate well into 11 inch littles versions of people, and can do a lot with them character wise. I like Rainbow High but for me they are really just decorations. I've recently gotten into hair rerooting and it is so fun.

Speaking of the RIGHT way to collect Barbie. I found an Elvis Blue Hawaiin doll NIB for $50. I really wanted it, but didn't buy it because I actually open all my dolls to eventually redress and stage. Love your restyles! And as someone that sometimes keeps my Barbies in the box (like my older 1980s dolls) but mostly collects out of box/removes them from the box I agree that it's way more fun to take them out and "play" with them. I find so much more joy in taking a meh Fashionista and restyling them to be beautiful (plus giving them a mtm body) then just staring at my in-boxed dolls for a couple minutes. LOVE that FF Drew, the FF dolls are the best - so jealous, all I ever find in my thrift stores are dollar store dolls that lived through the Armageddon.
@epowell4211
@epowell4211 10 ай бұрын
She was one of the first dolls I bought (2nd hand) when I started collecting - she was just so stunning! I didn't think of her as a stereotype, but then again, I don't think of the curvy body as fat - I see it as more "normal". I do agree that the lipstick was a bit much, especially with the glaring white teeth - it did sort of mimic blackface. Those 2 repro dolls are on my wishlist, but since I never want to pay more than $30 for a doll, I'll probably never get them lol. That Drew is adorable! When people talk about the declining quality of Mattel, the first thing I think of is the lack of detail and separates. I was a kid in the 70s, so I was used to dolls that came in outfits you could mix and match at least a little, with accessories. When I recently returned to collecting after nearly 30 year absence, I browsed through so many decades of dolls online, and the Fashion Fever era was definitely a high point for Mattel, IMO. The outfits were layered, detailed, and realistic. "Jeans" on a Barbie now are just printed stretch fabric that is thinner than my underwear. They can't even be bothered to continue a pattern to the back of the outfit.

The doll with the Summer head sculpt's afro is too cute. She looks beautiful. You did a great job. I did not know there was a controversy against her. Interesting. I like her darkest skin tone. I like her curvy body. I am a black American. I think she is beautiful. I find when I put my Barbies on shelves because I have high ceilings, I am always dusting, especially my Barbies hair styles. The vitiligo Barbie's afro is too cute also. You are really good with the afros!!! I can see why you prefer the petite body types. The clothes are definitely easier to find. Do you sew? You could make your own designer clothes. I think the right way to collect Barbies are just to get what moves you. I personally try to limit myself to 150 Barbies and Kens total due to storage. Also, my build my own Barbie houses. I limit myself to 15 houses due to the size of my doll room. I do enjoy making my own Barbie furniture also. I like one of a kind furniture. Have continued fun with y our collection!

I was surprised when you said she looks like a golliwog? I think it's considered a racial slur. Although you're not wrong. Some dark skinned dolls can pull off the light lip color but this one definitely looks better after you fixed her. Personally I prefer getting dolls I already think look cute lmao. I'm just now getting into the hobby tho so maybe I'll be doing some reroots and faceups in the future tho and making some $5 busted looking dolls into absolute baddies

@BarbiesGBF 10 ай бұрын
I suppose I was speaking more in reference to the actual golliwog dolls that had exaggerated jet-black skin with lighter colored lips. If it’s being used as a slur nowadays, it’s probably in reference to them. They’re just called golliwog dolls.

I really like the hair restyles you have done. The purple hair is lovely and I especially liked the doll with the light brown afro. I'm curious to see how your ginger girl turns out. I am going to try that technique out as well since that hair fiber some of the dolls come with is total shite. Just ugh, gross. I didn't have any fashion dolls as a kid and even though I am enjoying buying Barbies now as an adult, most of the clothing they come is just "meh". The contrast between the quality and attention to detail that the outfits used to have and how that compares to the majority of the modern doll clothing is unbelievable. That doll with the red and yellow outfit was amazing, a lined coat, stockings and everything. I related to what you were saying about customizing your dolls and the satisfaction and connection that brings. I started buying a few dolls last year to practice doing face repaints and wig making and it's developed into a major hobby. My husband is so totally weirded out by this. I'm guessing his tolerance for finding tiny disembodied heads with wig caps on them is quite low or something. 🤷‍♀
