You’re right they won’t know and your horn section will probably question the different rhythms in what is often played Soli. Great deconstruction. My favourite thing is spending time on deconstructing soul and motown horn sections. ❤

Awesome review, good chance the trumpet player is moving his jaw for this sound. Unlike sax trumpets moving the lower jaw is normal. For instance shakes are lower jaw movement.

Thank you so much for the video and pdf! I recently finished my third arrangement of Superstition for a horn section, and I have spent countless hours listening to various phrases on repeat without the benefit of isolated tracks. It's fascinating to finally hear them playing their parts clearly! I managed to correct a lot between v1 and v3 of my charts, but I still had plenty wrong and no idea of all the tricks they played on the chorus riff. The question remains as to how much of this I would try to get a horn section to learn, depending on the number of people, instrumentation and skill level. It will be great if I get a chance to try sometime soon.

This is awsome as usual. Is there any chance you can transcribe the improvisation solo of Sonny Stitt in Fly me to the moon, from the 1971 Albom: Just the way it was: Live at the left bank. I find it an amazing solo, but almost imposible to trancribe, for me of course, I'm sure you'll pretty much nail it.

Well I've just picked up the sax again after a layoff of around 6 months, just joined a little practice band, doing some blues brothers stuff. Today its raining outside and you have just given me todays practice. hitting the minor pentatonic and seeing if I can smash superstition. thanks for the inspiration. one question though, If i'm playing this as the only horn player in the band (tenor in my case) would you combine bits of the score or focus on one part of the overall score ?

@mr.saxplayer4373 I have the same question for Jamie, and all the other KZfaqrs who isolate parts! I thought they were getting the stems from someone who has legal access to the original recordings. But, I don't really know.
@mr.saxplayer4373
@mr.saxplayer4373 10 ай бұрын
@@MarkPeotter not sure - there is a software from Hit'n Mix called DeepAudio which is able to separate stets, at least Vokal, guitar Bass , drum, Violine and "other" which means all horn parts are together in one stem, but I'm not sure Jamie has used this one ...

Brilliant video Jamie. I’ve always found the main issue with Superstition is guitarists usually play it in E. I made the classic mistake of transcribing the horn line from the original Stevie version (missing the details you talk about). When I went to the open mic, I started playing and quickly realised I was in the wrong key. The guitarists were kind enough to change keys for me. One big learning opportunity.

That’s a great analysis but at the end of the day, a dance floor full of partying folks really couldn’t care less. And if another horn player came up and tried to offer constructive criticism on playing it in a more correct manner, he’d be laughed out of the venue. I’ve played the song countless times for decades. After learning it off a record without all the isolation tools.
