Bobby passed in 2003, but Bill still sings this song with his new partner. He ends it “Bobby’s got a helluva band”

And now there's a new seat at the piano and a beautiful voice to join them belonging to the amazing Christine McVie. It almost makes me wish I believed in a heaven just to hear Christine singing a duet with Janis. With Jimi & Stevie on the guitar, Keith Emerson on keyboards, Neil on the drum kit of course and The Ox playing bass. A hell of a band, indeed!!🤘💯

This is a paean to Jimi, Janis and Otis. It was originally done by Climax but failed to chart. This version by the Righteous Brothers made it to Nimber 3 on Billboard Top 100's. They updated the original to include Bobby Darin and Jim Croce. They did a one time reunion version on American Bandstand that included Elvis, John Lennon and Keith Moon. Beautiful vocals blended to greatness and a great melody added homage to those lost. Great reaction Harri. Thanks Harri and Brandon. Great memory. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦

Bobby, the blonde guy, grew up in my town of Anaheim. He was a couple of years older than my oldest sister and they were acquaintances...I think he was class of 59 and she was 61. He did it all, football captain, basketball captain, student body president, varsity baseball, talent shows, etc. He was known to be a very nice, funny and charismatic. Bill, the dark haired guy, also lived in the area but went to a different school. 'They say' they got their start at the Bean Hut in Anaheim singing Hot Tamale. :)

I’ve always loved this song! BTW, Bill Medley has the deep voice and Bobby Hatfield has the higher register. Bobby is sadly the one who has passed on.

Bobby belongs in that song. Bill is still touring. He's the Baritone. Bobby was a counter-tenor, an amazing range. No falsetto. Thanks for that, Harri. One of Bobby's bbest but little known, is "Stay With Me," recorded when he was a little older. Its amazing, if you would like to check it out.

Another one you might enjoy is "Nightshift" by The Commodores. It's in the same vein as "Rock and Roll Heaven", paying homage to singers who has passed.

Several years ago l saw a picture that pays tribute to the idea of this song as it was a pencil drawing of artists like Freddie Mercury, Bob Marley, Michael Jackson, Elvis, David Bowie, Jimi Hendrix, John Lennon, Jim Morrison and several others l can't remember with a title like "God's Band" or something & unfortunately it is true as each year we lose more & more of the truly outstanding performers that made their own songs & didn't need autotune to make them sound great. R.I.P. (Recitals in Paradise) to each & every outstanding performer we have lost over the years of our lives, we miss you dearly but your music will live on forever.

I think the style of song would have been categorized as Philadelphia wall of sound. It definitely had some spots where you could dance to it but not the whole thing. The righteous Brothers were a class act! Peace and love!

Thank you for your reaction! There is, IIRC, a Stephen King short story based on this song. A young couple get lost driving down the road and wind up in a small town where dead musicians happen to be. It's kind of like a Twilight Zone episode. They're in "Rock & roll Heaven". Huh, isn't that guy at the counter Elvis Presley? Hey, that's Patsy Cline. There is Elvis at the diner. Jimi Hendrix. Oh, there's Janis Joplin. This song was so interesting because I'm absolutely sure if there is a rock & roll heaven "they'll have a hell of a band". :)

Great song. It includes the names of a lot of deceased singers such as Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Otis Redding, Jim Croce & Bobby Darin. This song has been rewritten a number of times to include other singers as they passed away. They later added Elvis Presley, John Lennon, Keith Moon, Roy Orbison, Jackie Wilson, Ricky Nelson, Dennis Wilson, Marvin Gaye, Sam Cooke, Cass Elliot, Stevie Ray Vaughan etc.

Stephen King wrote a short story with the same title about a traveler who stops in a tiny desert town called Heaven & the population of residents looks like many of the stars of music & film who died young like James Dean. The residents are spirit vampires who attempt to get the unwary travelers to stop overnight to take their life force. King uses older music as a muse for many of his stories.
