Samara wants her story to be spread. If you make a copy of her tape and show it to someone else you are sharing her story. She spares those who share her story and kills those who don’t. Rachel made a copy so she was spared. Noah didn’t make a copy so he died. At the end, she made Aiden make a copy so he could be spared.

@@robertyeah2259 wow so even when she was alive Samara always had supernatural abilities ? And she was always just an evil little girl ? I would love a back story as to how she became this way
@stephw1702

Samara has the ability to implant images into someone's mind, ones which are implied by others to have not been good. This led to her parents keeping her in the barn. However Samara began burning images into the horses' minds as well, causing them to throw themselves into the water. It's also where the picture of the tree on her bedroom wall in the barn came from - Samara burned that image into the wood. When the cabin was built above the well, Samara's spirit was able to imprint images onto the video tape. The video plays like flashes of her life, perhaps her last thoughts as she died. The faces of those who watch the tape being blurred in photos seem to represent how someone would look if being viewed from under water. The scratched out faces in the magazines look like Samara with her long hair covering her face. She then leaves her victims with horrified expressions, their skin looking like someone who was decomposed in water.

That was the best explanation I've seen so far you get a (Shia LaBeouf clap). I came here to tell them that I'm glad you did. I believe when she kills you it's because of the fear she puts inside of you with the images and it gives you a heart attack the facial expression is dying of fright but of course some supernatural s*** involved as well. Or it can be the chemical fear building up in your skin at a rapid rate it turns greenish I don't know lol. Also her soul was bonded with a water demon when she was born I don't know if you knew that or not.

I first saw the Japanese version in college in like 2003. We had Japanese exchange students and one of them brought a tape of it and we all watched it and were thoroughly creeped out. One of the Japanese students had a mini TV that she had at the foot of her bed because she didn't have any room. She went to bed that night and woke up screaming in the middle of the night because she kicked her TV on, and it was static 🤣🤣

I love your confusion at the end because you were thinking what the movie wanted you to think at - what Rachel thought at first. Samara is a poor abused little girl angrily calling out from her grave, just wanting to be found and heard. Nope!! Samara is evil and supernatual, evil before her mom killed her, and evil after death. One of my favorite movie twists ever. (And they were spared for making a copy, spreading Samara's evil.)

You gotta remember though something MANY ppl still don’t know (and what Rachel found out in The Ring 2) is that Samaras soul was bound with a demon at birth…something she had NO control over. She was born cursed so if she is evil then it’s not her fault. Either way, there’s no way Rachel could’ve helped her. Her birth mother had a chance but failed when Sam was a baby .

I seriously can't believe it's been 20 years since this movie came out. And sparked that whole Japanese horror remake trend throughout the 2000s. It feels like it wasn't that long ago, like it's still a recent movie. I'm getting old. 😭 This movie was always more eerie and disturbing than outright scary to me. I'm glad you two had just as many questions as I did after I watched it. 😆

- so true and that’s where my interest is piqued in this particular specific set of circumstances. I love horror/psychological thriller films but NOT into the American satanic devil crap at all! I’m also NOT a fan of a lot of Japanese stuff that is classic Japanese Horror (but I find it seriously disturbing-start w/ “centipede”- not my thing). I dwell on it so it is just better for me to say “no thx”! But with the whole Ring/Ringu/Ju-On/The Grudge…I was thinking they were same but they aren’t, so I’m trying to figure out the reason behind Ju-On and the cat and I get them all mixed together because I resort to just calling it all the ring again and I get stuck in reading the same in translation! I’m babbling I realize, but I hope you get what I am asking…compare/contrast the originals w/usa versions. I will keep trying but anything you can comment on, I’m grateful! I have watched it and really want to understand it, I just don’t know how it translates. 🙏

For those who don't fully understand Samara, there was a supernatural component to her character, particularly after death. Basically, she was born with strong psychic ability. In the Japanese version, this ability was called "nensha", which is the ability to project and burn her thoughts onto nearby objects or even other people's minds. She inherited this from her mother, who was also proficient in these abilities. (Her mother's story is explained in Ring 2). Samara was found by the Morgans, who took her in. During her stay and as she got older, the girl was overcome with her abilities, and could not control them. As a result, she would often unwillingly project her thoughts and even nightmares to nearby objects and the Morgans themselves, as well as the horses. The Morgans would see horrible visions and thoughts as Samara's abilities went out of control and she forced her nightmares onto her adopted parents. The Morgans grew fed up, and they realized the girl was causing everything. Out of frustration, the father locked her in the barn in an attempt to shut out her powers. This only brought her close to the horses, where she projected her thoughts onto them. This caused the horses to go insane, as the thoughts would burn into their minds and force them to commit suicide. With no options left, they chose to get rid of Samara, throwing her down the well. While she was down there, she tried to escape unsuccessfully. In a fit of rage and close to death on the 7th day, she saw an old videotape near the well using her psychic ability and quickly burned her story onto it using her nensha. After death, her spirit was consumed with vengeance, and she cursed the tape, causing all those who watch it to die within 7 days, the same way she did. The only way to break this curse is to make a copy of the tape, and show it another person. This person must also copy the tape and do the same, or suffer the same fate as Samara, and so on forever. Her goal is basically to ensure that her story is never forgotten, and punishes anyone who ignores it.

The thing is about this movie..and it took me literally today to figure this out..the entire thing was set up so Samara can still kill people. Think about it. Rachael made a copy of the tape the day after she watched the tape and Aiden got a hold of it on Day 5. There's no reason for Rachael to still have visions or for the horse to jump off the ferry by that point. She's already done what she was supposed to do and that was to make a copy and show it to someone. Rachael was being played the entire time by Samara: the visions still occurring, the centipede on the papers to distract Rachael enough to find the hospital video, the burn mark still on her arm, the arrow made of out marbles leading to the well, etc. Samara set it up for Racheal to find her and open the well. She literally unhinged the entire floorboard of the cabin so the tv would knock Rachael into the well so she could find Samara. It was to release Samara from the well so she can continue to kill, not because she was an innocent little girl who was unjustly killed by her mother. The psychiatrist said it, 'ever since that girl's been gone, things have been better,' because no one was watching the tape until Katie and her friends. Samara tricked Rachael into finding out what happened to her so she can kill people and that's why it still continues. If Rachael left it alone and never watched it, none of this would have happened. Katie died, but Rachael kept pushing something that didn't need to be pushed and that was to continue the curse by watching the tape herself. It's basically a film that shouldn't be if the character didn't watch the tape. It's a film with no happy ending and, in the end, the main character was being played the entire time.

She (Rachel) let someone else (Noah) watch the tape which passed the curse on to him. By letting Aidan push the video into the machine, he was then making a copy for someone else to watch and in doing so passing the curse onto that new person. You have to watch The Ring 2 to find out how that goes.

I'm not gonna check if anyone answered this already, but they key to surviving is to make a copy and show it to someone so it can "spread like a virus". The montage of clips and audio from earlier in the movie lays that out before it goes back to her and she says "I made a copy". She made a copy for Noah and he watched it, thus why she lived and he didn't. That's why she's having Aiden make a copy at the end and he asks "but what about the person we show it too?" The last shot on her face says a lot in response to that question. One of my fav movies so I enjoy explaining it. :)

By making a copy, Rachel perpetuated Samara's story. She's the only one to make a copy. That's what Samara wants - for her tale to be spread to someone else. She helped her son make a copy to assure he is spared too - at the expense of whomever finds the copy.

Omg y'all did it. Really going in with the spooks. Much respect. I love that you guys are diving head first into the iconic and scariest horror films. This is my 2nd scariest film of all time. First is the conjuring which you guys already experienced and Asia agrees lol. Keen to see you guys do conjuring 2 at some point. One of my all time favorite franchises that I don't see enough people reacting to is resident evil with Milla jovovich ( who you guys saw in fifth element, her first film) but what really made her career bloom was the resident evil films and her character Alice who I adore. A great sci Fi horror series. I would really love it if you guys did that and also a very powerful film is prisoners, it's a disturbing thriller but very good. It has high Jackman, Viola Davis, Jake Gyllenhaal etc

My mom and older sister and I went to see this when it was in theaters, it scared my sister Annie(RIP) so badly that for two months whenever she had to use the bathroom she made me sit outside the door so she would feel safe. A perfect example that PG-13 movies can be terrifying. Crazy how long ago, rest in peace Annie Clapper, you existed and were beautiful and mom and I miss you everyday. 11/18/87-8/6/21💔 PS. This movie is also one of the few times the American remake was better than the original Japanese film and do not watch the sequels they are TERRIBLE.

Rachel was spared because she made a copy and helped to spread Samara’s curse by showing it to someone else. So at the end she made her son make a copy so he would be spared. This is based on a Japanese film called “Ringu”, or just “Ring” in English. If you’re looking for another creepy film like this I recommend Ju-On: The Grudge, and it’s American remake “The Grudge” with Sarah Michelle Gellar. Both are really good and really creepy, in MY opinion anyway haha.

The Ring is actually remade…it is a Japanese movie. The Grudge, also made by the Japanese is really scary too…..love you reaction guys! By the way….I too used to have bruises when I woke up, but mine weren’t from horror movies. My husband and I ended up having separate beds, because he suffered from “ night terrors “ when he was younger ( legs, arms flailing ) and it would not wake him. A night with him was like going a few rounds with Rocky Balboa lol. He gets them very rarely now as he’s grown older. But he fell asleep on the couch a while back and had a tv table beside him with a can of soda and some snacks.. He had an episode, kicked over the table, every thing went flying. He was punching the air and flipped himself on the floor, scared our dogs and cat. That one did wake him up!

Post viewing comments - Your reaction was even better than I expected. I love the fact that Samara was not just an innocent child wanting to get the truth out. This story line had been done many times before, so I was pleasantly surprised by this "twist". She was indeed evil, even by her own admission, she wanted to hurt people. This is what stuck with me after watching it, and made the whole viewing experience that much more un-nerving. Last thing, I strongly advise you don't watch the direct sequel to this. It's a jumbled mess and does away with so much of Samara's story by adding new, and un-necessary elements to a well established story.

@Ben yes, I have the Japanese collection on blu. This is probably the only J Horror that Hollywood got right, imho, Verbinski knocked it out of the park. While the Japanese original is a classic horror, Verbinski's re-make doesn't make it "lame" just because it is a re-make. The US sequels, on the other hand - WOOF! Also, the Korean re-make, for all its shortcomings, is far better than any of our remakes.

When I seen this movie I was living WAY out in a very rural small town(it often felt like a ghost town because you rarely seen people in the town at the store it was that small) The state I was living in was fairly new to me. I felt far away from everything. The house I lived in had an old well just like that right outside from the kitchen window near the house. It had locks on it. I was already creeped out about all of these things. And I find myself watching this movie in the middle of the night. Home alone. And I just seen a girl climb out of a well then out of a tv!! I nearly had a heart attack!! I still do not understand this movie. Honestly I had forgotten the story behind it. 🙈🙈🙈

I love your channel. Both of you are so much fun to watch. I always have the same anxiety and fear Asia has (when watching a scary movie)! You're both so wonderful. Lots of love from Canada! :) The Ring has two meanings: (1) The literal Ring of the the drowning Samara seeing the ring as the well closes. (2) The figurative Ring, in order to survive the cycle, Rachel made a copy of the tape and showed it to Noah. As Aidan watched the original, he is now required to make a copy and show it to someone else. Thus, the Ring continues. The only way to survive the cycle of the Ring, you need to make a copy of the tape and show it to someone else (within 7 days!). Please watch "Ringu", the Japanese original. Just as scary. However, the US version was better. Alternatively, Ju-On (the Japanese original of "The Grudge") is phenomenal; whereas the US Grudge (w/ Sarah Michelle Gellar) is just adequate. The 2020 US version of the Grudge is simply garbage (but extremely violent and gory). Thank you for your channel! :)

The reason she was saved, as others have said, was because she made a copy of the tape and showed it to someone else. Why it has to be a copy and not just showing someone the original tape is a bit more easily understood in the book that the movies were made from. The story of the book is very different (and the sequels get WILD) from the original Japanese movie version, "Ringu", which was also quite a bit different from the American version. But the simplest explanation is that the video tape is a psychic virus. And, like any virus, its goal is to reproduce but it needs a host to do so. Therefore the people who watch the video are infected and the only way they can survive is to reproduce the virus and spread it to someone else.

The Ring is actually an Americanized version of a Japanese horror movie known as "Ringu." There's also a similar thing with "The Grudge" and "Ju-On." I HIGHLY recommend Ju-On over The Grudge because Ju-On is straight straight up terrifying unrelated people being killed by a vengeful ghost while The Grudge instead tries to put a narrative story into the thing and kind of makes it worse imo
