This tape is psychological horror at its absolute finest. No extremely loud, sudden noise. No jumpscares. Just complete mental unease at the oddity of the images and the sounds that go with them. Really wish there was more horror like this.

When I was younger (in the 2000s), my father and I watched this movie late at night in the living room, the house as quiet as can be. This film made me feel a dread and unease I've never felt again from a horror film. What my dad was hiding from me, was his phone in his hand, hanging over the arm of the coach he was laying on. At the end of the film, the tape is shown in its entirety to close out the film, portraying you viewing the entire tape and consequently becoming cursed. Right as the screen cut to black, my father called the house phone, and gave me a very convincing stare. Scared the ever living shit out of me. I chased him into our garage and that's that. Still haven't forgotten that to this day. He hid his damn phone dialed to the home phone the ENTIRE movie to pull it off. Fucking classic.

Lol, i have to give your dad credit, that was really good! Kind of a same thing happened to me so here ya go: I was watching the blair Witch Project and I was done watching do i went to bed. This tape REALLY looks like somebody's nightmare. No matter how many times i watch it, it won't be "less scary", it makes me feel inside the movie, or inside of a mental colapso. All the sounds, the cuts and the pictures... it's just... creepy. I don't know who made the american version of the tape but i'm grateful to him/her, giving me nightmares since 2015 (first time i've watched "The Ring", i was really young). This version is way better, it should be in the movie!

@@la_esmeralda444 Samara is honestly iconic. The Ring both the American and Japanese versions are both amazing in their own special way and I love them both! The Japanese version Sadako is in a game called Dead By Daylight now!! Also, can we talk about how iconic The Ring theme song is? So beautiful and eerie and gloomy, I love it. Hans Zimmer did it so well.

@@snakecharmer109 yes i agree, both are incredible. I honestly prefer the American, but Ringu and Sadako are also great. And i saw the Dead by Daylight DLC, honestly, i'm quite disapointed as a Ringu fan. Both Hans Zimmer and Kenji Kawaii made such masterful piece of art in their sountracks. No wonder why The Ring and Samara are so iconic!

In the original Japanese novel the cursed tape visualised the last thoughts and emotions in Sadako's dying brain. So I guess it works the same way in here, though the tape looks somewhat random, in fact every single frame has some meaning: - All the images of water show that Samara was feeling cold and wet at the bottom of the well. - Before death she was obviously thinking about her mother and why she did that to her. - The nail piercing the finger and breaking the fingernail (and the chopped fingers inside a box) shows that Samara was feeling pain in her fingers for a long time because she broke her fingernails desperately trying to climb up. - The centipede symbolises that there were insects at the bottom of the well and Samara felt disgusted because of that. - The falling ladder symbolises her memories of falling down the well and the mere feeling of falling. - The burning tree possibly symbolises her anger and desire to burn everything after they did this to her. - The cadaveric worms symbolise her understanding that she's going to die soon. So yeah, everything makes sence if you give it a little thought.

I remember watching this film with my elder brother and a family friend back in the day. (2002)And during this scene, one of our neighbour's telephone started ringing very loudly in the middle of the day. Our faces went white with fear. And we decided that it would be a good idea if we just paused the movie for a little while and talked about school assignments and other mundane activities.

The VHS release of The Ring played this at the very beginning before the trailers. I knew nothing about the movie so I remember being very confused. It wasn’t until the movie started that I realized how clever they had been with that.

I'm really glad the filmmakers decided to edit quite a lot of the images out of the final film, most of which look far too clean and polished to suit the tone the film was trying to set. The sound mix is also a lot better in the final film. It ended up being much more organic and unsettling than this full version.

Why is it that out of all the grotesque and creepy imagery in this clip, the maggots, the box of twitching severed fingers, the finger going through the nail, the woman in the mirror, none of that frightens me, but the image of the empty chair and the ladder leaning against the wall are absolutely horrifying?

Comparing both Sadako's Cursed Tape and Samara's cursed tape is quite... distinctly open to interpretation. Sadako's tape is much more abstract, and a little more direct on what Sadako's trying to convey. 1. The man looking down the well, the culprit who sealed Sadako in the well, her father Ikuma. 2. Sadako's mother combing her hair, her mother slowly going insane and in a childish prank; moved the mirror. 3. The jumbled Kanji all topics of Sadako's predictions, eventually the prediction of the mountain eruption. 4. The crawling people, the victims of the eruption. 5. The Towel Man, Sadako's confusion on who her father truly is. And the guised image of a protector. 6. The Kanji Eye, with the first bits of Sadako's name "Sada". Likely implying that she's watching the viewer as they are watching her. 7. The Well. The last thing all victims see till Sadako rises from the well to unleash her rage. Samara's Tape is more graphic, And is more imagery of what Samara is trying to tell the viewer. 1. The Ring. The stone seal that blocks off Samara's exit with the ring of light breaking through, she is trapped and can see her exit. 2. Flowing bloody water, Samara is wet and hurt. Feeling the flow of water. 3. The nail, likely telling us about her nails... 4. The embryo, she's a child. 5. The chair, describing her interviews and history with doctors. 6. Samara's mother, her thoughts turning to her mother and why she'd betray her like so. 7. The man in the window, Samara's father but an unknown man.. 8. The Cliff, of which Samara's mother would throw herself down. Knowing she predicted her mother's death. 9. The intestine, Samara is hungry, having nothing to eat being trapped below. 10. The Burning three, her rage and desire to destroy. 11. The fingertips & the pricked finger on the nail. Her fingernails have fallen off and she's in pain. 12. The maggots & centipede, she's not only dying but maggots are now forming on her rotting flesh. Bugs are infesting the well. 13. The dead animals and eye. Samara's glare will only bring pain and misery to all. 14. The ladder, she is pleading for an escape out of the well. But also how she fell into the well and has no way out. 15. The sealed well, Samara watching as her only way out is closed before her very eyes. 16. The Well, the last thing all victims see till Samara rises from the well to unleash her rage.

This is the version from the DVD. The version in the film and on the marketing tapes was very slightly different. I found one of those tapes and, wondering what I got myself into, followed the trail of breadcrumbs it began until I ended up at the biggest fansite for Ringu (and eventually the Ring). I posted a transcript of what I saw on the tape and chatted with people. Six days after watching the tape for the first time, the webmaster of the site was at my apartment making me a copy. Turned out he randomly lived a twenty-odd minute drive away, with traffic. Saved from Samara by convenience instead of the fact that curses don't real! What started with grabbing a random tape out of a box labeled "free tapes" with a flyer warning me not to watch it, ended with me and several friends being invited to this guy's private showing of the movie a week before it came out. I would be more snooty about the fact our cut of the film was different, but it was a change of literally a single plot-irrelevant word - presumably changed to avoid rating issues. The time around the release of the Ring was a lot of fun for me. Gore Verbinski and Tom Savini (and the rest of the cast and crew) made a singularly impressive horror flick. The early 2000's were also a golden era for marketing. Alternate Reality Games had only _just_ been invented, and viral marketing that blended the real and unreal while encouraging participation were growing and developing. I kinda miss weird shit being part of movie and game marketing.
