This is the movie that awoke my interest in Japanese horror. I saw it alone in the theater on opening night. It had such a different and genuinely scary vibe that I'd never before experienced. The feeling of dread alone was palpable. I think the part I found the most terrifying was when the kid says "you weren't supposed to help her!" 😯 God damn I had a scary drive home and refused to answer the phone for a while lol.

As a horse lover, the horse scene hurt and disturbed me so much as a child. Even today at age 25, I can't watch this movie because of that scene. Much like I can't watch The Mist because of the ending.

Would disagree, while The Ring is outstanding, the shoots of the apartment blocks were outstanding, the Japanese original for mine is in another level of creepiness.

Favorite horror ever. Stuck to me for weeks, like old folks talk about the Exorcist. I haven't watched those gross celebrity sex tapes either. They're perhaps more horrifying! Rewatching your stuff cause I'm sad. Reality sucks.

I wasn't as big of a fan of the movie. But I do have a really funny story about the first time I watched this movie with my family. It was almost 20 years ago when this first movie came out. And Blockbuster was still around. I had convinced my parents to rent the DVD for me and had gotten both of them to watch it with me. It scared the crap out of my parents and I was laughing my butt off cause I was a cool teen who thought it was stupid. Lol Then we looked in the special features and saw that they had the "forbidden video" for anyone to watch. So once again I made my parents watch it with me. And when it was done we were like "wtf was that???" I was hoping for something scary or a bit more explanation to the curse of the girl. But no. So I get my disappointed butt off of the couch to put the DVD in the case, then the phone rang!!! I kid you not, our house phone actually rang!!! Well, my heart skipped a beat for the first time. My cool, smug demeanor went out the window as I glanced back and forth at my parents. They did not budge. I was shaking as I walked to the phone. I took a deep breath picked it up and went "hello?" In a bit of a squeaky voice. Then I hear someone on the other line scream "Touchdown!!!!!" It was my older brother, he was watching a Bronco game and they had just scored a touchdown so he just had to call and tell us. After yelling at my brother for the horrible timing. My parents laughed their asses off for hours after that. I don't think I ever made them watch another horror movie with me again. But now it is something we all laugh at every once in a while. 🤣

what happens if you repeately watch the tape? does the curse restart?

I can't watch this movie because of the horse scene. At the time I first saw the movie when I was very young. Like, I saw it in 2003 (I would have been about 9), and I'm 25 now so... but anyways, at the time I had horses of my own and it mentally disturbed me to consider walking out one morning and finding the horses mutilated. Its horrible. Anyways, awesome review as always NewBee!

The Ring turns 20 today! I remember seeing it with my sister Cara opening weekend Made $249 million on a budget of $48 Quite scary for a PG-13 horror movie but it didn't give me nightmares I didn't know this was a remake for so long of the Japanese flick Ring-u playing into the fears of emerging technologies , it was a trailblazer of grungy horror as well as ghost stories This was an interesting turn for director Gore Verbinski as he usually does blockbuster epics and screenwriter Ehren Kruger My first introduction to Naomi Watts and Brian Cox I forgot how moody and atmospheric the score is and the almost absence of color to fit the empty visual aesthetic Great attention paid to characters as well as mood unlike other Japanese horror remakes that were only cash grabs sacrificing the cultural relevance This movie works because the same fears of around new technology were felt in the western part of the world Great original idea of a cursed videotape that kills you after watching it in 7 days presented in the tradition of an urban legend The ending is actually the most intense scene and a terrifying twist given everything we've learned about Samara and her death Nostalgia Critic thought the film was ok but the surprise ending really stuck the landing It's got great stuff in it even though it has dull moments and things that don't make sense He also agrees there's something very retro about the terror being on a vhs tape with its black and white appearance and unsettling editing They made 2 sequels but they were just plain bad since they couldn't deliver the same genuine frights as before
