Officials in Rio de Janeiro hoped hosting the 2016 Olympics would help make it a first-class city. Instead, many buildings and stadiums made for the games have gone unused since the event ended.

You just described Brazil's self-created persona to the rest of the world. "Carnival all the time, easy living, naked women, lots of booze, and no consequences!". Well, actually, yes, there's MANY consequences. No city with huge permanent shantytowns has any business hyping itself as a hedonistic entertainment destination for rich white people.

WZTwiggs you’re honesty blind. The olympics in Rio is a great example. They tried to make their country look good by hiding the favelas by tearing them down, instead of helping them. All the money they could use to help their people was spent on the olympics. This is because of the greedy corrupt government. Corruption has a lot to do with this.

WZTwiggs Kinda. The statesmen were eager to held the games here so that they could deviate money from the public funds with overpriced construction projects. After the games the state of Rio de Janeiro bankrupted. Today, the stadium is widely used for soccer and concerts. It is in perfect condition; - The Aquatic Center (which was temporary) was dismantled. The structure of the swimming pools was distributed to 6 schools in the region; - The buildings of Athletes Village are practically all occupied or sold; - The Deodoro arenas were transferred to the private sector, where events are held (including Rock in Rio); - Guanabara Bay really sucks. Its general condition has regressed since 2016, it's a shame.

It's a good idea but it would defiantly cost wayyyy more than the average Olympics that countries host. You can't really build an island without countries then fighting over who rules it and even if it was an independent Island/Country there wouldn't be a way to pay for (aka no currency unless the Island is under a Countries rule) or have maintenance. The reason Rio's stadiums are now deserted is because of the corrupt government/system they have, I'm sure Japan will not have the same issue since they're far more advanced/less corrupt.

The London 2012 games was actually a saviour for Stratford which was in bad need of a regeneration project. The Olympic park is being used as West Hams (A London football team) main ground. The aquatics centre is being used as a regular swimming pool and every other major sporting ground was temporary as the planners knew that they would go un used.

It's a similar story for Vancouver 2010. Part of the reason is that most of the facilities used were already existing. But olympic village turned an empty industrial ground into a vibrant mixed-use area. The biggest and best thing is the transit infrastructure built for the games. It used to be a nightmare getting to the airport and south of Vancouver before the line was built.

A. G. Yes. The whole Olympic and Pan Am games racket is a big scam, perpetuated over and over in concert with local crooked politicians/ organizers. The same people visit each city, paying off crooked piliticians, so they can steal from that countries taxpayers. Like a pimp using a prostitute, they move onto the next city when they have extracted all of the cash they can. The taxpayers are then saddled with mostly underutilized, high maintenanance facilities that are of little use to the local taxpayers. I never used to think this way, but the proof is in the disasters at almost every host city.

Whenever an Olympics is hosted in a third world country, the government builds all of these buildings with people's money. The workers that build these buildings barely make any money (there are no labour unions in third world countries) and may even work in terrible conditions (people die building them). The Olympics brings in a lot of tourism, which means a lot of revenue, but this steady flow of revenue does not last. After the Olympics is over, most of these buildings are not maintained and are not used ever again. Did I mention that all of the revenue goes back to the corrupt government instead of the people? People that are mostly living in poverty? In Rio, they had to build a structure on a road that exits from the airport because right next to it, there are plenty of people living in shacks. Instead of knocking them all down and providing the people with a decent home, they build a fence because they are ashamed. Oh and they want people to come again, which they won't. This goes for the World Cup, the Olympics and every event like this. *We must bring an end to these atrocities once and for all.*

I agree that the money invested in the event in Brazil should be better used with social policies and infrastructure, but know that the Maracanã stadium shown in the video is not the same abandoned stadium they are claiming in this article. In fact, there was poor management of the structures in the first year after the Olympics, but the spaces have been used as planned since 2018. The Maracanã Stadium in Brazil is the largest and most functional stadium in use since its construction in 1950 until today. I don't know where you got that information. It host the most football matches in Brazil and the Copa America. and the landfill has been a construction site for the future Rio F1 circuit since 2018. The Olympic park hosts major events such as rock in Rio and lollapalooza every year, 700 thousand people each day during the 7 days of the event only at rock in rio . It is far from being abandoned as stated in this article.

I am a Canadian and I am very proud of how the Vancouver Games of 2010 materialized. All the facilities that were built are all in use every year. Lots of the facilities that were used were preexisting and were just upgraded for the Olympics. We never spent 10's of billions of dollars for a one time use facility. I think that out of the last 20 years of olympic games Vancouver is the only one being used every year. We also have world class facilities in Edmonton from the 1988 games where all athletes from around the world come to train. The world should learn from us.
