Modern Huntsman presents a documentary filmed by The Pace Brothers. This film, dedicated to the Himalayan Tahr, is produced in conjunction with "The Rise and Fall of a Mountain King," a story written & shot by Byron Pace in Modern Huntsman Volume Two.
The decisions we make about wildlife and the environment cannot be isolated. We have to always consider the global context, and strive for a sustainable future. This documentary was filmed in June 2018. Less than three months later, the New Zealand government announced a mass culling of their Tahr population, which could decimate the world's only viable Tahr herd. The IUCN list Himalayan Tahr as 'Near Threatened' as a result of the current decline in their native range of an estimated 30% over three generations. Population estimates are are their hundreds by native country, with the New Zealand population thought to be around 35,000. The current cull plans would leave just 5000 animals, with the possibility of no bulls within this number.
The Tahr is currently threatened in its native range, and now persecuted in its only stronghold in New Zealand. This film was produced in association with Hard Yards Hunting.

Joseph you’re an absolute credit to hunters everywhere. It’s a relief to see a growing number of hunters who are willing to articulate hunting at its best to the wider world. Yes, there’s bad practice in hunting just like any other walk of life, but you show that done right, there’s nothing more natural, sustainable and wholesome. Thanks to all involved.

Magnificent work and a huge congratulations to the Pace Brothers, Modern Huntsman and Joseph Peter. Joseph is absolutely correct about what ten days in the mountains hunting these magnificent creatures does for ones health , both physically and mentally, and the individuals outlook on life. We, as Hunters, from all around the world, need to unite and protect our environments and game. And our game , whether introduced wild animals or native needs to be controlled, but most importantly, looked upon as a resource from a holistic position. That is all the benefits that their existence provides to hunters from the mental and health attributes to the individuals that enjoy them to economic stimulation for local economies. To gun them down and let them lie from helicopters is a gross waste and financial burden to the citizens of the nations where it occurs. Our planet has limited resources. Lets rise up, unite around the world to protect and cherish the hunting opportunities we have and work to expand them. Once again, a huge appreciation to those involved in the film.

Excellent production, you captured the true essence of what it means to be in the mountains hunting Tahr, challenging yourself both physically and mentally but also at peace in nature. Tahr are such valuable resource, one that you cannot put a price on, one can only hope the government does not go ahead with the proposed cull, however, it appears the minister is adamant it will.

Epic clip bro wicked footage and a great insight into tahr hunting in New Zealand and how important it is to keep such a precious resource well managed

A very accurate account of what it's like to hunt Thar in New Zealand, they are a wonderful resource for our country, it's just shame our government don't see it the same way! Thank you for a great film, I will definitely be sharing this film on my page.
