The Rise and Fall of Austria or the Habsburg Empire / Österreich

Austria was ruled by the Habsburg dynasty from 1278/1282 to 1918. Therefore, historical Austria is also known as the Habsburg Empire or the Habsburg Monarchy. The Habsburgs made Austria a great power in 1477, when they inherited much of what is now the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg. Soon afterwards they inherited many more lands by their marriage policies. During the 16th century, the Habsburgs ruled over large parts of Europe. Charles V reigned over perhaps a quarter of the European population (not to speak of his enormous American colonial empire). The centuries afterwards Austria remained a great power until World War I, when the nationalistic thoughts in Europe finally divided the old empire into many small states.
It's important to put in mind that Austria has always been a "part" of Germany until the 19th century. Indeed, the German Empire didn't exist until 1871, but the Germans (Austrians included) more or less realized they shared a similar language and culture, and the medieval Holy Roman Empire actually was for the most part a German state until it fell apart in the fatal 13th century. Since 1452, the Habsburgs were (with one short exception) the emperors of the Holy Roman Empire, which was by now virtually a very loose confederation of states. However, the position of the Holy Roman Emperor gave the Habsburgs privileges and some sort of loyalty from the German princes, although some monarchs-most notably the Prussian kings-openly contested Habsburg primacy. The Austrians were finally abandoned outside the German Empire in 1871.
Music:
Johann Strauss II - An der schönen blauen Donau (English title: The Blue Danube), composed in 1866.
Mistakes:
-The French province of Roussillon should be red from 1516 to 1556, on the eastern border with Spain.
-3:22 'Silicy' should be spelled as 'Sicily'.

@@senecathefuka441 This is incorrect. The actual quote is "Die Lage ist ernst, aber nicht hoffnungslos." You're misquoting "hoffnungslos" (meaning hopeless, which is being translated as "catastrophic" in this context) as "hoffnungsvoll" (meaning hopeful, which is the exact opposite of what is actually being said). The entire quote is an Austrian joke from WW1 and it goes like this: Germany to Austria: The situation is serious, but not catastrophic. Austrian Reply: Here, the situation is catastrophic but not serious.

We always were in touch with other cultures and today you can still find people from Hungary, Serbia, Bosnia, Slovenia and many more living in our land. Quite the balanced thought. I couldn't agree more. However, the numerous graves of my ancestors give another grim look to the empire. The Serbs and The English were 6 million in total in 1900eds, nowadays the English 60 million, the Serbs 6 million, roughly. Austria had, generally, positive role in the Balkans, as a beacon of civilized Christian society. And in my mind it was a savior for the Slavic Christian population against the menace from the Asia Minor. The refugee camps along its borders, called Krajina, allowed the Austrian empire some peace for the certain duration of time. However, as always the global politics had rolled the dice and once the protector of the Serbs it becomes the arch enemy. Who is to blame?
@mariag1746
@mariag1746 5 жыл бұрын
@@slobodanjovanovic7493 - I beg to differ. In 1900 population of London only was 6.7 million. In 1914 Serbia had a population of 4.5 million. The territory of what is now the Republic of Serbia was part of the Ottoman Empire throughout the Early Modern period, especially Central Serbia, unlike Vojvodina which was under Habsburg rule starting from the end of the 17th century. Austria-Hungary hated Serbia. 1876 Serbia & Montenegro declared war on Turkey, went to war against them in order to conquer Bosnia, and were badly defeated. Serbia was anexed under Ottoman rule almost constantly from 1459 - 1817 - gained it's independence in 1867 and recoginition by the 'Great Powers' at the Berlin Congress of 1878. You talk of Krajina - which is in Croatia and a long long way from Serbia. Serbia was a vasal state of the Ottomans & as such were the terrorising force on the turkish front lines. So much for the "beacon of civilized Christian society". Serbs showed their degree of civilization in the 1990's as well.

Slovenia was the longest "member" by the looks of it. The allies really did horrible job dividing the lands, they gave big part of Slovenia to Italy and brought a lot of suffering to the people for coming years. We got most of it back, although some parts were left in Italy. We're still in good relations with Austria tho, although this migrant crisis is driving whole of Europe to hell.

infact, original town names in Kärnten and Steiermark are Slovenian (Carantanian) just a few examples. Leibnitz = Lipnica (lime tree), Graz = Gradec (small settlement) even on the north Steiermark you have Schladmig = Slapnik (loon), those are all germanised slovenian names. even in south oberÖsterreich you have town windishgarsten (germans called slovenians windish at the time), you also have a town name gloggnitz in niederÖsterreich (glogotati = sound of a river) which is not very german name is it? its not that slovenians influenced german austrians but they influenced slovenians to the degree where they became (german) austrians themselves.

Or Austria mainly gained territory through marriages and partitions?

Orkar Isber LOl fucking moron Mongolian did into have a larger population nor a bugger empire. Mongolian had the largest empire interns of non-broken land mass. But the British ahd the largest and most powerful in the world. and it proved it self as well. Example how many cities did the Mongolians build?? Now ask yourself how many Cities did the English/British build around the world and nations??
@OrkarIsberEstar
@OrkarIsberEstar 9 жыл бұрын
finalfrontier001 get your facts straight. The mongolian empire encompassed a much larger portion of the worlds population than the british empire did - of course related to their respective times. And yes the english empire had a LITTLE BIT more area but spread all over the globe not as a single landmass. besides that the mongolian empire lasted longer than the british one did. To city building - its a bit unfair to compare an antique culture with a industrial one, dont you think? But the mongols did built quite some things and made it into legends of various cultures, which the british empire did not accomplish

Very interesting. I did not realize how volatile Austria's history was until I saw how they gained and lost, gained and lost and finally, was reduced to a small, landlocked country by the end of WWI. Just the same, the Hapsburg monarchy was one of the oldest, most noble houses and most influential dynasties in history.

Slovenia was the longest member also its lands were called inner austria. The fact is that austria is based on slovenian state carantania. its center was in carinthia/kaernten/koroška. Czech and Slovaks still call austria rakusko which is karusko = koroška. In carantania ruler was selected by its people and thomas jefferson copied some things from carantanians to modern US constitution.
