Video games have replicated myriad historical periods, recreating the likes of ancient military conflicts in strategy games and both world wars in third and first-person shooters. World War II, in particular, has long remained a favorite backdrop for first-person military shooters, and by the mid-aughts, such titles dominated the genre in nearly every conceivable way. Battlefield, Call of Duty, and Medal of Honor enjoyed great success on this front, effectively laying the foundation for all manner of copycats. But Polish developer Techland adopted a different approach when devising plans for its second stab at an FPS property.
For Call of Juarez, the studio turned to the Wild West, a period in American history whose romanticization spawned the western film genre that inspired several generations of popular culture. This iconic and resonating era surprisingly received little love within the realm of gaming, however, which further stimulated Techland’s interest in pursuing a “serious” western adventure.
While Call of Juarez never garnered much in the way of high praise, the franchise’s first two outings possessed a certain charm that many would argue dissipated as the series trotted on. The third entry, the dismally reviewed Call of Juarez: The Cartel, drew the shortest straw of them all upon failing to justify its drastic shift to a modern-day setting. And though Gunslinger-the fourth and final installment-delivered a thrilling arcade-like romp, it, not unlike the IP as a whole, faded into obscurity once the initial excitement surrounding its release wore off.
Techland has since moved on to greener pastures, its talents reinvigorating first-person action in an entirely different genre. But those who long for Old West-set exploits may fondly remember the days gone by when Call of Juarez held more promise than the Gold Rush.
This is the rise and fall of Call of Juarez.

@@fullweezy3553 Partially why I am enjoying playing VR games and developing VR games. It's "mature" enough to be viable now, but since it has only existed in a practical form since around 2014 - 2015, it's pretty much the wild west as what works with normal games usually do not with VR and while some norms for what is considered to be good VR has emerged, they are very much bound to be changed as we experiment. Kinda wish AAA would attempt to experiment a bit more and not just create safe products for VR, but I understand they are profits first and simply won't.

Gunslinger is an amazing and under-rated gem. It's like someone took a fighting game and made it an FPS. The unreliable narrator aspect to the game was brilliant too. The only other game I can recall doing this was Dragon Age 2 and to a much lesser extent (I won't even go into all the other issues that game had, however).

I was always a little surprised that Call of Juarez did not garner a larger audience. Sure, Cartel was a bit of a dog but the other three entries in the franchise were solid and fun. Ray McCall was the sort of larger then life character that make Westerns so enjoyable. It is nice to see GVMERS covering the series.
@gamerinatrance3618
@gamerinatrance3618 Жыл бұрын
I guess it really comes down to how much of an audience there is for these kinds of games. I mean how many Wild West games are massive successes? Only one that comes to mind is Read Dead Redemption and that's mainly cause of brand recognition and Rockstar's practically unmatched studio notoriety. You'd think that Call of Juarez as a series would sell really well if there was a large audience given that it was basically the only FPS series set in the west, but clearly there isn't that big of an audience to begin with.
@sneakyskunk1

@@gamerinatrance3618 The Wild West was the closest thing to mythology as America was ever going to have. The reality is far and away from how it is depicted in film, television, song, written word, and video games. The myth, however, seems tailor made for gaming. That there are not more games set in that era always seemed a bit odd to me. That and(as you mentioned) the success of RDR 1 & 2 should have opened the flood gates for a number of successful by proxy imitators. It did not happen. Given the gaming industry's penchant for modeling its behavior on successful trends, I am genuinely surprised by that. Thank you for replying.

The first call of Juarez was really something special at the time, sneaking mechanics, exiting duels, the story was very good, the open world mission where you had to climb that big mountain actually made me happy as it felt like an achievement, bound of blood made me excited for the franchise again as it looked like a massive improvement of the first one, I have to say I like the choice between the two brothers and their different abilities actually made me replay the game again and it does play so much different as the other brother , and then it all came crashing down when I preordered the special edition of call of Juarez cartel, never been so let down by a game, I mean what the hell happened there, so many pointless missions, the shooting from the car at other cars was such a pain in the butt, but this is a happy story as gunslinger came back harder than ever and it was everything I ever wanted, a fast pace arcade shooter, yes it was short but at least it was back to its roots, let’s hope for another proper call of juarez 😀

The only bad thing I remember about Gunslinger was that iron sights on two out of three revolvers don't align properly(rear sight notch is much lower front sight post... so in a sense character is just holding the gun wrong) then so it's hard to acquire targets in a pinch. Other then that, the game was perfect. Sadly I learned about it only during free giveaway and had I known it's great back then, maybe the story would have been different.

That's how the revolvers were shot back then. The large blade sight was easier for horseback and point shooting. You would aim the front sight about midway higher than the rear, unlike today, which you level out the sights :)

the first Call of Juarez was the game that turned my totally casual brother into a hardcore gamer (only for this title, he became casual again afterwards). He played the game online on the X360 (I am a PC gamer but I owned a X360 back then) with other 16 people who were usually online (there were like 30-40 regular players). I'd cry with laughter watching him play the online maps of the first CoJ which were soooo fun (Panoche Pass, Mine Encounter, etc etc). I was more of a campaign player, and I completed CoJ several times. The countless hours I spent watching my brother play that game online, the way he knew all the tricks in every map, his comments on certain situations and plays etc etc, bring very good memories. I als got the second game, and bought the first again for the PC, along with Gunslinger, but the first CoJ is my favourite ever.

I'm actually fairly new to the franchise, completing all the games just about a month ago. The original was amazing. I liked graphics, story, playing as two different characters where each played differently, then Bound In Blood improved on everything the original did and it also was very enjoyable. Unfortunately then I played The Cartel and was extremely disappointed, it felt like a worse version of a COD campaign, it didn't have anything original going for it and it made me have low expectations for Gunslinger as well. But thankfully Gunslinger pleasantly surprised me. They completely changed the art style and it had nothing to do with the gold of Juarez but it's easily my favorite game in the series. I loved the comic book art style and how we actually play through the story of Silas Greaves just as he is narrating it to the people at the bar. Also the fact that they had included real people from the was a big plus in my opinion. Sorry for the long comment but to summarize I enjoyed first two games and Gunslinger while I absolutely hated The Cartel.

Lot of love for Gunslinger here (it deserves it) but Bound in Blood is supremely special to me as well. The cast is great and every level oozes Old West, an embarrassingly under-represented genre in old games. Also love how Poles have a more mature attitude toward American history than Americans themselves with the role of the Confederacy in the story.

Loved the two first games. Especially where the games do a pause from the linear gameplay and introduce an Open World approach. And man, the sound of the guns!

Gunslinger is such a good game, it's an amazing western shootout experience with a great atmosphere and story. I wish they would make a sequel, it's better than most games and also a really rare and unique title and genre!

I played it 5 times already. I wish it had multiplayer. That would be very fun to play. . One comment about the video: techland also made a farming simulator game. It would be nice to mention it to highlight the direction the studio is taking.

Man, I remember what is almost a decade ago, when me and my brother bought a Pirated DVD of Gunslinger game when it came out just because the cover looked cool. At first my 13 year old brain couldn't figure out why the game didn't save properly (Crack Issue) then me and my brother enjoying the heck out of this game playing it back to back and then I gave it my best friend, he wasn't that good in English so I was translating the jokes and dialogues for him, he was just calling this game a straight up masterpiece. Which it definitely is.

The Cartel had great ideas. It was just extremely rushed and unpolished. Wasted potential.

Yeah definitely you're right, the cartel one was pretty dope but like you said it was just hella short the storyline and it it definitely was rushed 100%. If they would have just took a little bit more time on that game and put a little bit more effort into the story made it a little bit more in depth that game would have been it would have been a cult classic but it went the other direction. You know typical stuff it was a quick cash grab for the developer

Bound in Blood was somethin else, has one of the best fps dual wielding western gameplay out there, still the best of the best. A long winding road of a story about family, loss, war, the west and brotherhood. How far would you go to save your lost brothers. Would you follow orders, or break ranks to save the ones you love? And thus live with the consequences. its sequel, The Cartel while being a pathetic mistake, at least it lead to the brilliant release of Call of Juarez Gunslinger. Even with a low budget its a fantastic love letter to the western genre. and fittingly returns to Bound in Blood's excellent gameplay. Albeit missing a few beloved gunplay features Thanks to the huge efforts of Techland and R* with Red Dead weve got a fistful of damn good westerns to play.

I loved the first two game back in my high school years (2011 - 2016)! Gunslinger was fun too! I wish Techland (or someone else) would continue the series. I'd really like a CoJ game set after the first game, following Billy's life again with Molly. Or just a remake of the first game would be cool too.

CoJ, CoJ2:BiB and Gunslinger are all fantastic and play great. One weaker doesn't change the fact that it's a great series. I hope it will come back sooner than later.
