At the height of its success, J.Crew and its sister company Madewell were operating in over 100 countries and had over 500 stores. Seen on celebrities, politicians, and working professionals around the world, J.Crew was considered at the top of the retail food chain. In the midst of the coronavirus pandemic in 2020, the company filed for bankruptcy. However, the brand faced a lot of challenges before the pandemic ever came to be. This is the rise and fall of J.Crew.

I still have one of their beautiful wool sweaters from 1990 and it looks like new . That’s when you could still get clothes that were well made, with high quality materials. Now the quality is all crap.

$800.00 shirts are just not important to me. Funny how the actual super wealthy are just comfortable in jeans a t-shirts, while others are trying to look like they think the super wealthy dress. Thus J Crew's problem. They started catering to the entertainment industry celebrities as if they are the ones that buy the vast majority of clothing. Like When Levi's jeans moved their whole manufacturing operation outside the USA and still tried selling their jeans inside the USA for $30.00 and a unknown by the name of George's comes along and produces a pair of jeans that have softer fabric that is just as durable as Levi's jeans but $20.00 cheaper a pair. Get a pair at Walmart any day of the week for $11.00 a pair.

The ancient Chinese had a saying: Everything reached its peak, it will decline. And when the decline reached its abyss, it will rise again. The problem with American capitalism is this over optimistic view that everything will continue to grow and expand all the time. But there is a cycle in everything.

The age group you are speaking of never really engaged with shopping in the first place. Most items bought from your group are online so the appeal isn't there to shop at J Crew. Price is why you buy an item because the living wage is absolute garbage. I think your age group would rather go out for dinner than buy an expensive shirt.

Exactly that. The quality and customer service needs to meet the high priced item. When there is fabric that is not comfortable (feels great), have a little stretch, and withstanding washing, it is not worth paying for. The elitist idea is great, but they need to close the outlets.

True. I remember that as a child (around 2010) I used to help "styling" my mom, and the first thing ever I bought online was a J.Crew dress. It came beautifully packed in a box I still have to this day, and the dress itself was and is really pretty and timeless. Now the quality is just about the same as GAP or Banana Republic, and the styles are not timeless classic pieces like before.

Agreed. Bought a pencil skirt from J.Crew in 2002. That thing was perfectly talored and lasted 10 years. Bought a sweater a few year back and it last a couple year. Recently bought a sweater and it didn't last 6 months. Thing was so cheap. Also they produce different quality products for there outlets then there regular retail store and made customers to believe they were getting last seasons goods from the regular store. This information was lacking from this video and I believe was an essential part of the downfall.

Puzzoozoo they started to fail because they cut corners on their quality. Their core customer, like myself, left around 2013 when we realized paying $300 for a cashmere sweatshirt from Jcrew was no longer worth it. In 2013 the quality was not any better quality than the GAP, because prior to that year, it was. In the past I could invest in buying nice quality fabric items and they would last for years. Unfortunately that's no longer the case. I haven't even walked into one of their stores in over 5 years.

NAE yep, that's why this company failed, for no other reason than the quality deteriorated. How could they not realize the customer was willing to spend the money on quality pieces, but when the quality becomes the equivalent to the GAP, why would I spend that money anymore?.????? In my opinion, this was a big part of Victoria's Secret problem too, the bra quality became very cheap. It was no longer worth the money.

I have shopped at JCrew, for myself and family for many years. I have items that are 15-20 years old. The flaw I see in JCrew and many other stores is that they have become to trendy. JCrew was a store that I could get work clothes and quality basics. I find I buy less clothes and even when things wear out I don’t replace them, because there is no where to buy nice affordable basics. I see this with Madewell too. It was a store to find basics with an edge but now everything is very cutesy and overly trendy.
@vitaminC7657

I agree with you about Madewell. I used to STAN their store. Their jewelry and sweater selection was to die for. Now...it’s a mess. To many fashion pieces and not enough staples. Who wants a closet full of puff sleeve ruffle front blouses and sweaters😳.

You expressed my sentiments exactly. I LOVED J.Crew from for years and then when it (Jenna Lyons) started to be shown at fashion week, then sequins were put on basics, I knew that it was over. They forgot their customers and wanted to be trendy and it didn't work. I used to love Madewell but now the only thing I love about it are its ankle boots. Their jeans don't even feel good on like they used to.

They’re up in their jets flying here and there making billions shifting money all over the planet, killing economies and small businesses everywhere. They and their partners have personal shoppers and private tailors so they don’t have to worry what happens if their latest card game goes down in flames. And please, don’t call that Capitalism. Jcrew died because of fast affordable fashion and because they cater to modern conservative staples. When you can buy a t-shirt at Target for $7 why would the average consumer pay $40 when you can’t really see that much of a quality difference. A lot of these popular clothing retailers are suffering the same fate. The GAP, Ambercombie & Fitch, and J Crew. They need to be more sustainable like Everlane. Keep their quality high and charge comparable prices. I hate to say this because I think Instagram/You Tube sponsored videos are the work of the devil but they need to get out there in terms of advertising.

Fair prices and good quality usually means to pay more money than usual. Normally in a big part of the world you will have to pay a significant amount of money to get long lasting products. United states is a very big exception. Discounts are huge and there are lots of offers to purchase good clothing relatively cheap. However, that ended up creating fast fashion, which is the one who creates more pollution and near slavery in many poor countries. I am aware that some people is not able to get clothes unless is something from gap, or h&m or banana republic. The issue is when everyone wants to have a huge closet or are enslaved to seasonal trends. Or they want to copy celebrities. I get back to my original point. Fair prices means to pay more, more sustainable and durable. Expecting to pay little and get great clothes causes to burst fantasy bubbles like this store j crew, gap, etc.

I feel like J.Crew is marketed to basically the same customers who shop at LOFT, Banana Republic and other mid-priced retailers...but doesn't offer as wide of a size range. LOFT rolled out plus sizes and offers petite sizing. Although apparently J.Crew offers plus-sizes, just from checking their site I noticed that only about one-third of their styles are offered in plus sizes, nor does it offer petite or tall options. So besides the fact that they're overpriced, they might do better if they targeted to 'niche' markets more often.

Madewell is definitely doing a lot better than J. Crew. I think it's in part just due to what kind of fashion is in right now: J. Crew has a reputation for being very preppy/WASP-y/"classic" (a style that kind of peaked in the 2000s) whereas Madewell sells the more artsy style that has really become popular with brands like Anthropologie and Free People.

It wasn't exclusivity that caused the decline of J. Crew. It was that quality of J. Crew products that severely declined over the past five to seven years that did them in. J. Crew clothes are not even worth the cheap price they have been charging in recent years. Cheap material, design flaws, stitching so poor that the clothes fall apart in a short period of time. Sadly, most other U.S. clothing retailers have done the same thing and cheaped out making their clothing in places like China. I'd rather buy more expensive, better-made clothes that were actually manufactured in the U.S.

I used to spend hundreds a month on clothes at the mall in my 20's. I would never have been caught dead at a thrift store. Now post recession, I've found thrift stores that literally sell higher brand name clothes WITH THE TAGS STILL ON for 50 cents or $1. I literally bought a mid luxury brand leather shirt with the tags still on for 50 cents! Now that I've experienced that, I can't pay the prices I used to pay ever again. I work for J Crew and one of the reasons they aren't doing well is bad management. The CEOs have run it to the ground. I've been there 6 years and have had 5 CEOs. Each one changes the whole way the company runs. They waste millions of dollars buying equipment, changing procedures, moving merchandise to other stores and then having to move them back. In Virginia we are using auto bagging to ship out merchandise which is all we do now. The larger items are done by people. The merchandise is not as good and right now we don't have enough work for people to get 40 hours. Stores are closing and we just got another new CEO. They can't keep workers.

The funny thing is that I used to have so many J. Crew sweaters because people buy them, wear them a couple times (or NOT AT ALL) then donate them to Goodwill. Enter ME. I never even sought the brand out, I just would grab a cute sweater off the rack and noticed it was J. Crew.

I think the US has a problem with this. Of buying lots of clothes, wearing them once or not at all like you state, and then donate it. In my country, everyone wears their clothes until they are literally falling apart (sometimes even 20 or 30 years). Or give it to family and friends if it didn't fit right.

I have a wool sweater that I bought from J Crew in 1996 that has not so much as a loose thread on it. No exaggeration, it still looks new. I was able to keep a bag that I bought there in the 90s for 15 years and two pairs of flannel pajamas pants lasted 12 years. The last sweater I bought from J. Crew (around 2011) faded, shrank and had loose buttons after ONE WASH in a lingerie bag, in cold water and being laid flat to dry. The two t-shirts I bought the same day more or less disintegrated in less than a year of normal wear and also being treated very gently. Everything I've ever bought from H&M and Target has lasted longer. Their clothes are cheaply made overpriced trash now.

Too pricey and poor quality now. Tried to buy size 12 jeans in store and the salesperson who was checking for me disappeared. I tracked her down and asked if she had a 12 in stock. She looked really embarrassed and said “I’m sorry, we don’t carry your size in store, but you can order them online.” That was it for me. Never shopped there again.

Dressed in J Crew through my college years in the 80s/90s back when the quality was great and, i think, made in the US. ... don't know if the quality was the same after that. As the catalogs stopped, so did my purchases. One thing is for sure: I would never buy ANYTHING ZARA or H & M, and if I were a woman, FOREVER 21. FAST CLOTHES are wickedly bad .....I don't want throw away clothes and refuse to buy clothes from retailers that treat garment workers as though they are as throw away as the clothing they are sewing.

I've bought J-Crew for a decade. Within the last 3 years, the quality of fabric changed. Newly purchased polo style shirts had holes within just the first couple of washes. Colors faded dramatically (even in cold wash) in just 6 washes. I like the brand but purchasing clothing and having them unwearable eats up money.

I LOVED J Crew about 5-10 years ago. Their clothes and jewelry were great for the 30 something professional. But for the last 3 years or so, their clothes have lost all sense of style. That washed out, faded look with flower embroidery? Box shaped tops and dresses, UGLY shoes and accessories. $30 for tissue paper thin t-shirts? What happened? The clearance sale isn't even worth it any more. Whoever pissed off the designer that made them profitable - shame on you.

Fully agree with Drexler that recent business moves (e.g., Mercantile line) have cheapened the brand. I remember even as recent as the early 2010s, JCrew was synonymous with impeccable quality and coveted by upper-middle-class individuals willing to pay the full retail price for their preppy styles. I remember being ecstatic to find JCrew in my local thrift store back then, but now I find JCrew on sale in stores for thrift store prices. With the overexpansion into cheap quality J Crew factory and mercantile lines, JCrew has lost its niche market. It's no longer exclusive enough for people to pay premium prices, but it's not cheap enough to compete with fast fashion. Still, I absolutely love the mainline J.Crew quality at the current sale prices. I hope J.Crew and Madewell stick around.

They were excellent back in the early to late 90's for us college kids - back then. Clothes were well-made (I STILL own a shirt from the mid-90's with their original label and the oarsman logo), and decently priced. They got greedy, when public ( as in trading) and raised the prices. Their men's sizing fit were for guys with size 30 waist and looked like models. They lost me many many years ago.

People have been on a non-stop clothing buying spree since the mid-2000s, during the online shopping, mid-tier-designer boom, and now we all just have too many clothes. Brands assumed that the demand for clothing would be inelastic (heh) while consumers are dumping their excess at Goodwill and trying to figure out if they can covert their half-bath into a walk-in closet.

Sure they made the Plus Sizes to follow the modern movement but their "fit pattern" is unchanged from slim body design. For example, the length of their top is still short and arms are too long or cut too short for "Curvy or Plus" body type. The same pattern is applied to Madewell clothes. Straight lines on curvy people make them chunkier and bigger.

I think the problem is that we all know a good skirt that’s ethically made costs between 200-500€. It’s when you pay 1.200-2.500 you know that 90% of that money is going straight into somebody’s purse that had no business in creating the fabric or stitching the zipper in...

The end of J Crew can be directly attributed to the rise of Jenna Lyons. She took the brand in directions that alienated long-time and loyal customers and set it on a trajectory that it would never recover from. She wanted them to be a luxury brand rather than what they were, a classics brand. Ultimately it cost her her job but the damage was done. Now with the economic impact of the pandemic they will be lucky to survive at all.

The company failed to develop brand loyalty. Selling too expensive when brand is not perceived as high end then flip flopping to low end is what killed it. A customer who is currently buying this affordable and well designed/made clothing dont want to pay more than they needed to. Neither do they want to pay a lower price for cheapen clothing. That's the Jcrew problem. CEOs think its rocket science that they are failing out of nowhere. But the writing was on the wall.

I’ve to say for clothing, jcrew has a great return of investment coz I sold jcrew pieces that no longer fits me and they sell like hot cakes. I got my money back for sure, whether sold used or new. I only purchased sale items though. Never paid full price. But man, the quality, the aesthetic and of course the catalogs that convinced me to buy them, you can tell it’s very well made. So sad they filed for bankruptcy.
