You've probably heard of Juul - a device so popular, it became a verb. The vaping giant quickly dominated the e-cigarette market, but instead of helping adults quit smoking, it got a new generation hooked. Now, Juul is at risk of being banned by the FDA and faces multi-million-dollar lawsuits for its role in fueling the youth vaping epidemic. So what does the future of e-cigarettes hold, and will Juul have a place in it?

In a way they were because nobody really understood the full effect. Like they said in the video, people only knew it was less harmful than cigarettes. Again, like they said in the video, their warnings had terms that teenagers didn’t understand.

yeah this video is bull shit, literally everybody knew there was nicotine in it and that's why they bought it!! nobody got tricked into vaping it was pretty clear what it was from the start, kids at my hs before juul became huge were already ripping box mods and cigarettes at parties a good year or two before Juul ever even came to my state. the problem is that humans just love nicotine an every generation will have their preferred method of consumption. like you said, mfs will always find a way. 200 years ago it was peace pipes and chewing tobacco, then it was cigarettes and dip, now it's disposable vapes and zyns.

As a high schooler in 2016, the kids who vaped definitely knew that there was nicotine in vapes and that it would be bad long term. They just literally didn't care. It made them look cool and that was all that mattered. The now adults complaining that they didn't know better is a absolute joke to me.

The issue isn't telling teens not to do something. The issue is telling teens it's safe to do something when it really isn't. That's irresponsible. If teens really want to put junk in their system, sure, they'll find a way. But if they're presented with actual facts and not just told "it's safe," many will definitely avoid the stuff in the first place.

Slightly off topic, but I remember finding an old Juul pod on the bathroom floor and assumed it was a lost flash drive (I had never seen a Juul before this). So I naturally turned it into my school's lost and found, and I ended up having to serve a detention because of it. Word spread that I "got in trouble for smoking" and in a few days, I was suddenly "popular". When I mentioned it to my family, my Grandma just sighed "It's the 50s all over again...you either smoke or you're a loser".

There was only sub ohm box mods or the refillable stick mods when I started and Kangertech was the big company. Let that sink in of how long Ive been vaping and smoked before then. I went from 12mg to 3mg in 2 years. Had a stressful situation 2 years ago, smoked for a year and a half and now on 15mg of salt nicotine. Kept my old GeekVape Aegis for when Im ready to cut my nicotine. I strongly advise againt vaping anything unless its FDA safe. Go to your local vape shop and buy some refillable juice if of legal age

I was a pack to half a pack smoker a day until juul. I switched to juul when the pandemic hit bc I knew I couldn’t afford $10 a day patiently waiting for backed up unemployment from my shut down restaurant job. I didn’t think I could do it, go from heavy religiously smoking every day to this device and get the same satisfaction from a cigarette. After a week or so I didn’t miss my morning smoke with my coffee or having to drive to get cigarettes once I was out. I than realized how bad I smelled and my belongings I constantly smoked in or near…I was finally ready to switch. Then low and behold my state issued a band on all flavor vapors and it Infuriated me because I finally was off actually tobacco. Juul helped me, I wish it wasn’t so negatively perceived but actually a godsend to smokers who choose to quit cigarettes. My state may have chosen to ban the flavors but it doesn’t stop the teens from buying them from low key non chain stores, I say they’re more hooked now than before. Juul only has a bad rap for advertising when big Tobacco has been doing this for over 70 years, magazine ads, tv ads, mad men etc. Juul was never the problem, big tobacco just hated the competition

Juul hit my highschool like a brick back in 2017-18. The bathrooms in between class periods became juul rooms consisting of a large group of boys in a circle passing around 3-5 juuls around. No one left without a strong buzz. My friend made alot of money refilling pods. He had a large cup in his room filled to the brim with empty used pods and would buy juice online and refill them. I graduated 2018 so I don’t know what it’s like now but I’m guessing it’s worse with the fact that weed carts are a big right now.

I think the “problem” they are trying to solve is awareness. There’s several cases that you can see of older smokers. In most cases, a family member is a smoker and they can see the negative effects it can have on them. On the contrary, e-cigarettes have been promoted as a “safe” alternative which is not really safe but safer than smoking actual cigarettes. That’s where the government is stepping in and making sure that Juul pays for the damage they did. The company will more than likely go under and start with a different name (or it could already be the case).

As much as I dislike Juul, I feel like there was a lack of personal responsibility on the parents/kids side. If we start banning products like these, it impacts the people the product was actually designed for and scares potential start ups from coming to fruition. The alcohol and tobacco industries have flavored products with similar marketing on social media. Why aren’t they persecuted? It’s sad because I don’t feel like we need to be fully blaming JUUL for this. E-cigs are still on the market and still come in array of fruity flavors. Teens can still get their hands on anything if they really wanted to these days. Vaping is a good alternative for some of us ex-cigarette smokers that are of age. It’s unfortunate that just because JUUL revolutionized and reinvented the ADULT tobacco market, that they get a bad rep and corrupt name.

I was a Freshman in 2017 in HS and thats when I first even knew what vaping was. I was in a bathroom with some classmates and seen what they were doing and it intrigued me. I would say it was a big thing "juuling" especially in 2018 when it came to Juuls, it seem like everybody had one and I saw money there. As some of y'all know, during 2018 you could get almost everything vape related online from sties like eBay and other websites without an ID and if it did it was really easy to go around it. One time I spent like 300$ on some vapes and juices and coils etc and would make 3x what I had spent. At one point in high school people knew who I was and try to buy from me. I was smart to who I sold to and where I did it, key reason to why I never got in trouble for doing it. For me and what I had remember late 2019 is for when Juul was not the same when it came to students having them due to the reason that the pods had very little amounts of liquid and where pretty expensive for soo little. Now 5 years later going into my sophomore year in college I think back and just smile and laugh of the times I did business with people and how things where good for me. While yes it was wrong of my part to do it I knew there was many more who did it. I never sold to anybody being their first time and never sold to freshman's. I knew plenty people who didn't care who they sold to and just cared about the money. IDK how much I made from profits but ill probably say 1.5k to 2k over the span of 3 years. I did stop in my senior year to focus on college applications and my senior project. I never got hooked to vaping and quit before my senior year and i'm thankfully I did since I don't miss it and feel lucky to not have had any health problems. Till this day I haven't picked one up and hope not to, but hey this was just a small part of my life I wanted to share.

Ready access to vaping hardware and flavored e-liquids (including online sales) is indeed key, and can easily be continued while at the same time enforcing age restriction. We need to push back against the anti-vaping propaganda. Vaping is not smoking, and vaping legal regulated products has not caused a single documented case of EVALI. Its not the vaping itself, that they are worried about, its the addictive quality of the tobacco. If you can get it elsewhere for cheaper, or legally, its just easier. Well... My grandpa is 90 years old today and started smoking when he was 13. I've NEVER heard of him blaming the tobacco industry for his choice to start smoking - even though there used to be a lot of ads picturing it as cool back there. This collective lawsuit (or whatever it is) against Juul is a shame for those involved. I drink a lot of Pepsi, I know it is not good for my health, but I'll never try to blame PepsiCo for it - it is my choice and responsibility to drink it or not. There are no victims of Juul. This is ridiculous.

I get less sick with respiratory illnesses and feel like I can catch my breath quicker than when I smoked. I'm 25 but started at 16 with cigarettes I had a pretty rough few teen years. I support any restrictions toward curbing youth use but I don't wanna lose the thing that got me off cigarettes. It's 50/50 if I'd go back to them but I feel like I very well could. I think for some kids it was about being cool. But nicotine, as least for me was a stress reliever. I got addicted to it in my Junior year of high school, I thought the kids who hit their juuls in the bathroom were stupid af. But during lunch I just left hung out in my car in the parking lot and vaped my stresses away. The bigger issues are small locally owned gas stations. They don't ever card, even when the ban happened there were local gas stations that wouldn't card. So I was vaping "disposable" vapes. Basically, they're cheaper than regular vapes and aren't meant to last very long. Heres the kicker. Some disposable vapes have higher nicotine concentrations than Juul pods (3%-5%). Someone managed to make these vapes called "Happy Sticks", these get around to 6.8% nicotine which is a lot higher. For roughly $10 you can hit a vape with 6.8% nicotine and if you're addicted to it, would only last 2 days max. So these kids, like myself, would spend always $40-$50 in a week on these "Happy Sticks". Whoever owns this brand, knows what they're doing because they are only sold at certain local gas stations. All the kids would be hitting these stupid pens. Its been a battle to quit... Now that I'm above the legal age. But whenever Im at a local gas station I sometimes will see these kids who clearly aren't 21 walking out with this brand name "Happy sticks."
