Really sad to see Lakeforest in that condition. I worked for mall security in the late 80's when it was a nice place to visit.

Wow! What was it like at the time? Any interesting stories/anecdotes from its glory days?

@@maurogonzalez6609 yes, the mall was busy busy busy! The place to hang with friends like most malls. I had three jobs there, the first being in 1985 at Sunshine House Surf Shop.

I don’t know if this video will receive an uptick in views with the news that Lakeforest Mall is finally closing, but I’m adding this as a preface: It’s really bizarre seeing new comments on a video I made in the 10th grade as I’m about to enter my second semester of college. For reference, this was made for a school project when I was 16. This was my first time ever seriously trying to record or use editing software. Audio mixing wasn’t something I had ever done, nor was I sure how to inconspicuously record with my phone. I also had the impending deadline coming up, so I had to record all my lines while I was pretty sick & congested. I promise I sound much more bearable when I’m not behind a crappy mic, literally sick and tired, unable to breathe through my nose, haha. It’s extremely amateur, I know, but given what it was & when I did it I’m still relatively proud all things considered. The research I did (going to the county archives & digging up books & newspaper clippings) was the best part of this entire experience to me in all honesty (I stick to research papers now).

Well, thank you so much for spending the time to do this in 10th grade. Sounds just fine to me. It's quite obvious you did some extensive research on this. Thanks again for your effort. I wish you well in future endeavors.

I lived down the street from this mall in the early to late 1980's. Use to go there all the time. It was nice back then. So sad to see it go down hill like this. I guess it will end up like White Flint Mall.

I worked at the Lakeforest Ice Arena on opening day, and the first two years it was opened. I worked there again for the last eight months it was open, before it was rebuilt as movie theaters. (and later as Cafes in the Forest) The outer walls are curved from the shape of the ice rink. FYI - The chicken restaurant across the hall was originally an Arby’s that opened soon after the mall opened.

davemdowling Ahhh, thanks for correcting me! But very interesting nonetheless - my friends are always surprised when I mention the food court was an ice skating rink at one point.

@@maurogonzalez6609 I skated there for quite a bit of HS. Yes, Arby's across the hall but there were also a bank of pay phones in the middle of the walk way/hall. I'm thinking all of that is something not well known today.

Dan Droid ahhh really interesting! And yeah it’s one of those things where there isn’t a lot of photos of the mall on the internet, so a lot of that sort of information is really just in memories of the people who shopped and worked there at the time.

Dan Droid Yes, the pay phones. All the Jr High kids on the phone living the drama of a young teen. I saw many tearful conversations from the Ice Arena box office.

I was there a few weeks ago and so many of the open stores in this video are now gone. I feel like I'm losing a huge piece of my childhood.
