What a great video. Is that really a mortuary slab in the Canal Tavern cellar? Far more likely to be a simply a stone slab (stillage) for cold storage of meats / produce from the days where there were no fridges, which naturally could’ve been repurposed on the rare occasions needs dictated. Also, the Bird In Hand was in Kent Green rather than Miles Green. Mrs. Emmy Whittaker was the lady in question. She’d had a tracheotomy so had a very distinctive voice.

Yep... i do make an apology about "Kent Green" in the Pit Disaster video. The Tavern Manager told us that it was definitely a mortuary slab, but tbh we have to take his word, but know where you are coming from.

@@DaveWaterhouse-oy2ovAs you’ll know, most old buildings would’ve had a stone stillage, often in the pantry if no cellar, where among other things they’d keep a block of salt from which a piece would be cut off when required. My late grandmother would make herb beer and store it in the cellar where they had a large stillage. Back then this beer would be given to the men who helped with the hay making. This was in the rural hamlet of, er, Whitehill!
