For a brief moment in the 1990s, the Kathmandu was at the forefront of the zero-emission public transportation revolution. An electric vehicle revolution which most of us have now forgotten. This is the story of Safa Tempo, its rise from an experiment to a successful transport sector and how Diesel Mafia killed it as soon as it rose to the top.

Kathmandu had a much better transportation method even before Safa Tempo -- the trolleybus. These are more efficient than battery operated vehicles, and we should consider bringing this back along the major routes in Kathmandu.

I have never understood my dad compassion toward safa tempo. He has gave more than 20 years of life for safa tempo industry and inccur great financial loss having to sell lots of ancestral property. After all these, he still own couple of safa tempo’s, a charging station and ofcourse millions of debt.

This is the biggest challenge for every related concerned authority be it central, state or local. The way these vehicles are increasing exponentially, something needs to be done. The way metros were built in new delhi with the help of Japan, we were too lazy& busy in political chaos to have that. But now things are starting to get beyond the limits. Traffic jams are like norms now. Public transport is a huge headache & that is why online ride sharing apps are becoming so successful but the cost is too high for a normal citizen to use them on a regular basis. Public vehicles are required to be managed and the concept of metros are needed for such a heavily polluted city.

Please do a video on TrolleyBus in Nepal as well and what lead to its demise. There might have to be a correction in the video, where the vikram tampo in KTM where Blue in collor the black and yellow tampo were called kalo tampoos, not sure if they were from the same manufacturers.

As far I remember from childhood, bikram tempo is blue colored tempo that had similar design to safa tempo but used to run on diesel. The tempo showed as bikram tempo in this video is auto wala tempo.

I think the Vikram tempo was the blue one just like safe tempo before safa tempo came not the auto . Tyo sano black tempo was meter tempo just like meter taxi. Vikram tempo was same as safa tempo pachadi Bata chadne wala ani teslai replacement garera safa tempo aayeko.

8:14 these are vikram tempos..... not the small ones. The Vikram Tempos were exactly same in shape and size with the safa tempos. Blue in colour and loud as hell. And we refer to safa tempos and modern electric vehicles as electric and not electronic. There is a big difference.

Glad someone pointed this out, these Vikram tempo were shifted out from Kathmandu valley to Chitwan. They used to operate in 2 routes from Narayanghat to Jutpani, Bakulahar to Jutpani. I have travelled my whole childhood in those, glad they are completely banned nowadays.

this... Vikram tempo used to make loud annoying noise..I still remember that day opening ceremony of Safa tempo in Kathmandu. I was like 5 or 6 but it's still in my memory. Watching it from the balcony of my house when all the Safa tempos went around the Kathmandu valley. There was a big one at the front. I don't remember if that was actually a bus or bigger safa tempo. There also used to be green tempo one or two I've seen with yellow roof top. It didn't have a steering wheel but handle like that of rickshaw tempo.
