It once held the title of the world’s tallest building... a little more than half a century later…It was just a memory in the New York City skyline. Today, two minute architecture Time Machine winds back the clock to explore the rise and fall of The Singer Tower. (also know as the Singer Building)

I had the good fortune to visit and see the Singer Bldg as I arrived NYC via the PATH in March 1967. When I got my first full-time job in July 1968 I was 😲😲😲😲😲😲 shocked what I saw exiting Hudson Terminal on Cortlandt Street looking up and seeing the Singer and City Investing Building being torn down.

That's amazing! I would have loved to see it in person. I always look for it when I see and old movie shot in NYC.

that must have been terrible I went through Penn Station when it was being demolished, when I was I think 15, I found it very depressing seeing the broken columns and statuary

If I have any regrets over buildings in NY that I did not get to see, it is this one, wow, still cannot believe they tore it down, thanks for the video

So happy you liked it. This one has always been one of my favorites to spot in old movies that were shot in NYC.

There was so much opposition to it too. It's a shame it was demolished the building was far more beautiful than what stands in its place.

I'm not one of those types that hate on today's building designs, I respect all art but the Singer building is simply marvelous.

I totally agree with you Christopher. Its such a shame that we lost the Singer Building. I remember that it would always stand out in old movies and TV shows whenever they showed a scene that included the downtown skyline. At least we still have the Woolworth Building, AIG and one Wall St downtown. Thanks so much for watching and for leaving a comment. Much appreciated.

Most pre wR architecture was objectively beautiful, most modern architecture is definitely not art and objectively ugly.

I was not around when the Singer building was demolished. But I have a love and interest in unique vintage architecture as well. I am from Chicago. But I defer, there is some cool modern architecture as well. But nothing breaks, vintage, if only walls could talk!

Probably the biggest blow to the city's architectural consciousness was the destruction of the old Pennsylvania Station. Thank God Grand Central Terminal was saved, because it almost met the same fate.

@@TyChee Ty , yes I plan on watching your Chrysler Building video! Also, there is a video out there of these two crazy young men that sneaked past security and ended up on the sloping roof of the Woolworth. Have you seen it? The multi level penthouse is under construction and they are climbing the scaffolding and then are shown climbing a ladder inside to the original observation deck and then another ladder to a smaller deck that surrounds the lantern just a few feet from the very top. They are crazy yet in my younger days I could see myself doing something nuts like this too!! Mike

@@michaelmichniak127 Hi Michael. Yes, Ive seen that video. Those guys are pretty darling and what an adventure that must have been. I lot of that was going on during the conversion of the upper floors to condos. I believe that the penthouse is completed now. I've seen articles that report that is will be listed between 79 and 130 million dollars.

I love the video but there are a few misstatements The Pulitzer (World) Building was completed in 1890 not 1894 and the Manhattan Life Insurance Building was completed in 1894 and the Park Row Building was completed in 1899 Of further interest and a stone's throw from the Park Row Building, although never the tallest in New York, was the Saint Paul Building of 1898 and demolished in 1958 Built contemporaneously with the Singer Tower was the City Investing Building of 33 storeys completed also in 1908 and which shared the block with the Singer Tower of 41 storeys again both completed in 1908

Well, I missed the Singer Tower though I am old enough to have seen it. However, I can claim to have gone through Penn Station before it was stupidly trashed. There is no law that requires progress to not move towards the boring and the mundane, particularly when the top priority is just money.

Mrs Richards: "I paid for a room with a view !" Basil: (pointing to the lovely view) "That is Torquay, Madam ." Mrs Richards: "It's not good enough!" Basil: "May I ask what you were expecting to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window ? Sydney Opera House, perhaps? the Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically past?..." Mrs Richards: "Don't be silly! I expect to be able to see the sea!" Basil: "You can see the sea, it's over there between the land and the sky." Mrs Richards: "I'm not satisfied. But I shall stay. But I expect a reduction." Basil: "Why?! Because Krakatoa's not erupting at the moment ?"

The Singer Tower was designed by a well know architect trained in the Beaux Arts design esthetic before the turn of the last Century. Unfortunately what was then fashionable in the business world is no longer so today. And yes, economics plays an overly important role in what gets build today and what it eventually looks like. The current building which replaced the Singer Tower unfortunately meets the programmatic requirements of modern office usage.
