Todd Carney is one of the most controversial players to ever play Rugby League. While he was a great player it was overshadowed by his off field incidents and the infamous photo known as the bubbler.

Todd was a legend of footy and memes growing up in my rugby circles in the early 2000s here in NZ, but i knew nothing of his personal grievances and losses. I think SLR did a good job in filling in the gaps and an unbiased commentary too so. Im grateful for the vid and it seems Todd is really using his 20/20 to possibly help other young fellas in 2024. Keep up the good work men.

That just shows how bad Todd's alcoholism was if he asked for the drinking ban to lifted....that just screams addiction & also that screams that he needed help but was possibly too proud or embarrassed to admit he hadda problem as well as asking for help

Good comment. People have to be so deep into addiction to think that everyone else is wrong.

@@victorcode2075 yeah mate, i mean being done so many times DUI & hanging on with a piece of string not just with Canberra but the NRL in general, he's future & the only thing he thought about was not being allowed to hava drink is pretty messed up. I suppose if ur so far gone in an addiction cloud then that's the only thing they hear being said & that in their mind is, "my life's over" just coz they can't drink. My dad's an alcoholic, he's been clean for about 3/4 years now after he was diagnosed with emphysema. He was told, as u could imagine, that he had to give up the grog & smokes, he actually gave up the grog quite easily & drinks the non alcoholic beers but he hasn't been able to give up the durries & if anything we all thought he'd give up the durries & keep drinking. He owned his own business, he's a panel beater, up until about 6/7 year ago & he lost the business due to his alcoholism. His main cash cow was the local second hand car yards but they stopped bringing work to him after 40 years coz he was spiralling outta control. My mum would go in a few days a week to do paperwork & when she'd arrived she'd do a huge sweep thru the joint to get rid of the grog coz he'd have hidy spots all over the place, all opened with a sip or 2 taken outta each one so no matter where in the workshop he was he could do a quick scull. Not only did he lose the business but my parents didn't have much in the way of savings with a mortgage still to pay off. I'd saved for years up around $10,000 for a holiday to South Africa & I've got none of it left to this day as i paid everything so they weren't on the street. My mum was extremely embarrassed but grateful yet my dad refuses to acknowledge that happened & has never said thank you once..... it's that denial which is more embarrassing to admit his alcoholism was the cause of losing the business as well as nearly losing everything & especially admitting i gave them every last cent i had. They say u need to hit rock bottom first before u can help urself but i honestly don't believe that, well not for everyone anyway coz he'll still deny to this day he hadda drinking problem. When ur caught sitting outside at 5:30 in the morning sculling beers before going to work but still denied, beer in hand he was actually drinking a beer, that's just the mind of an addict.

The incident in Canberra is not correct with Irwin,he wasn’t there carney was though and did run away but he wasn’t driving- it was a rookie playing first year with Canberra and carney took the rap for it.

Yes. It seems court decisions and nrl sanctions had little effect at the time. But he seems much better now, and likely can be a positive influence in the lives of young players. I applaud him for where he is at now. Tremendously talented, lessons learnt painfully, but he has gotten through it, unlike say Anthony Gobert, a tremendously talented Aussie motorbike racer, whose demons killed him.
