I was a member of a little DDR crew on the Ocean City NJ boardwalk from like 2005-2007. We called ourselves "OC Trinity" because it was started by the 3 best players on that boardwalk. We had little coins that we printed from Jilly's Arcade with our nicknames on them. I was Shadow X. We rolled up like 12 deep and would just take over the DDR and In the Groove (another great one) machines wherever they were in NJ. We would travel 2 hours just to beat some poor kid's high scores. When I was 20, I worked at an arcade that had a DDR room with 1 machine and chairs for people to wait in line. On my first day, I had to ask a gentleman who smelled like he hadn't showered in weeks to leave because he was stinking up the joint to the point where the entire arcade stunk. It's been 15 years and I still remember the look on his face. Sorry, man. Wear some deodorant next time.

Dance Dance Revolution was a cultural phenomenon during the late 90's and early 2000's, before social media was a thing. DDR fans all around used online forums to arrange meetings and even competitions. Huge communities of fans were formed in different places. In my country its almost impossible to find DDR machines.. there is a couple of PIU here or there but they are not nearly as fun as DDR, at least for me. I really miss those days, I met so many great people and made many friends.

Me and a good friend got into DDR at the start of the pandemic. We normally did a ton of hiking and camping but with us being stuck at home be each build a board, I wrote up a terrible keyboard emulator and we had working machines. A year or so in we really felt the machines holding us back so we got proper machines(There is one company in Poland that makes them still) and am playing to this day.

I learned pretty quick though that the machine was *heavily* modded, not only did it have songs never released in the US, it had custom songs that were definitely not on any official version of the game. I found out later the machine used to be maintained by the state champ before he moved off somewhere else.

DDR is in a way making a resurgence in North America. Konami decided to release their latest arcade mix "DDR ACE" or "DDR A" in North America with full network connectivity (at Dave and Busters, and Round 1 Arcades). Scoreboards are now all linked world-wide. Not to mention for the first year America was eligible to enter Konami's Arcade Championship, basically the official DDR world tournament. Chris4Life, an American, won 1st place. Who knows in another year or two you might be making another video talking about the second coming of DDR in North America.

I don't know if you've heard, but Round1 arcades are bringing arcades back! They have a lot of games imported from Japan, including the new DDR and even the Bemani games. If someone out there still enjoys arcade vibes or just want to play a round of DDR, you should definitely check out Round1! They have arcades around the US, and I was lucky to find out that they established one near me.

Dave and Busters has DDR Ace, fully online synced with the JP version Round1 Also has Ace, along with a bunch of other rhythm games from JP (Although with some questionable legality, although they are originally from Japan themselves) An American won DDR at Konami Arcade Competition last year (And most of the top 10 players qualifying-score wise are american) Pump it Up is still a thing that continues to be updated (The most recent update for it was on the 1st.) In The Groove still has an active community due to custom songs/charts being added to it before it got killed off by Konami StepmaniaX is a thing that is happening eventually ..and more.

I got back into DDR later after the US craze was in full swing, but I couldn't keep up with all that. Even though DDR has gone down a lot, the Pump It Up franchise seems to be bigger than it's ever been in 19 years. It may be harder to find machines in America compared to DDR because of Konami being a larger name than Andamiro, but if they are the newer cabinets they are not going to be run down not working cheap pieces of metal like so many random bowling alley DDR machines. The current 2017/2018 Prime 2 edition is the most beautiful version yet and the machines gets patch updates every month or so adding more songs and charts to existing songs. It's a great game for fans wanting to continue this line of games with a more modern feel.
