History of the Post-Soviet take on Britpop. All footage belongs to their respective owners, this video is for educational purposes. please feel free to correct any translation or info mistakes I made.
PROBLEMS WITH THE VIDEO:
I had this video lying around for months since I started making it all the way back in September but due to personal reasons, I had to quit for a long period. Take the long break and also add the fact that I tried experimenting with the visuals/format and you are going to get a disaster. There are problems with the audio, those annoying flashes in-between songs, and all kinds of other problems with the video. The most annoying thing is the fact some of these problems aren't visible to me in the video editor (for example the flashes) so I have to export the video to see them. That's all nice and good till I realized that it took basically four hours to export this video.
The perfectionist side of me wants to redo everything but realizing that I have to wait another month or so drains the energy of this channel. At this point I just kind of want to get this video finished one way or another. I figured that despite its flaws, the video is still watchable (I think, hopefully) and there is enough interesting information available. I guess you can say that the quality of the video reflects the music (Rokapops fans please don't unsub).
This year we will have more content and more variety (from genres to geography), so this video can be considered the last of 2023.
We still have a ton of interesting music to go through so in order to start this year, I had to just let go of everything holding us back and get ready to dive headfirst into the crazy world of Izhevsk, Tropicalia, Finnish Post-Punk, Saint Petersburg Zolo, Chinese Grunge and all kinds of weird cool stuff. Sounds cool eh? Yeah, to get started with that I just needed to drop this once and for all. Ok, excuses finished, please let me know about a good free video editor in the comments please.
I'll see you in the next video.
Special thanks to ionnis for the song graphics and thumbnail.

Ilya Lagutenko to me, as a child of late 1980s, who became a teenager in early 2000s, is still russian David Bowie. He had such a revolutionary lyrics, sound and image, which took me too far in a rock music exploring journey. A lot of different bands which you mention are unique and curious too (such as Kolibri, Agata Kristi, Zemfira, etc. - love 'em) Thank you for such an interesting and unique video which explains such a great slice of russian culture and music. this is a beautiful work.

Wow I really missed out on a whole solid variety of music. There are some gems in here I will be checking out. Some of them could fit on a compilation albums with the likes of Fastball, Third Eye Blind and Spin Doctors

Wow, what a great video. So many great insights of this vague culture. I think it's only now that people start to appreciate this period in Russia, let alone in the west😅

Always a great video. My parents are very fond of this "genre", I always thought that it has no raison d'être, most of the groups are so similar that you can’t tell the difference.

Man, great content! Sometimes it's so refreshing to hear about your own culture from the point of view of a foreigner. Bssides, you have really deep knowledge. Btw, are you from Finland? Making an assumption based on your English accent 😀

And a few bands that caught me: "New Europeans" - neo-romantic band, liked the first Ep "Welcome back" and individual tracks, such as "Electric smile". They were well received in the west, so most of the material was sung in English. "Промышленная архитектура" - quite fresh synthesizer sound, unfortunately their leader, as Letov sang "strangled with a scarf". And "Curt & the contras" - early thrash metal band

All three cool and interesting acts. I will definitely have to shine light on the New Europeans and Curt (I have a Soviet Metal video on my list so he will definitely not be ignored). Selivanov I briefly mentioned in the Soviet post-punk video but as a figure he is really interesting and deserves a video of his own.

It's true that Kozyrev created a strong bias / abberations for that wave of the european-style guitar music. His politics as a program director on Nashe Radio isolated artists from the open competition and global context. It formed so-called 'format' where new bands just copied sound of their predecessors so they had no need to be up to date with the global trends. Thankfully, internet brought endless possibilities and now Russian-born musicians became part of a global scene. Nashe is a story of how lack of alternative channels and favouritism/tunnel vision of a one person could lead to the deformations of a natural evolution of any cultural trend. It's like to block the stream to form a pond, but pond eventually turns into a swamp.

Is it possible to have a noise video in your plans? I am offended that it is very underground, although some artists started their way even earlier than cult japanoise artists like Masonna or Merzbow. The Russian stage is more ritual and trance, unlike the ragged sound of the Japanese. I can advise what was released on Ultra and Provoloka. Also on my channel is a recording of a 1996 ALF concert, if you’re interested.

Oh most definitely, I love the Russian noise scene (especially the 90s stuff). I will check the concert out and thank you for the great comments. If you at any point want to share other cool finds (without waiting for the next upload), I recommended joining the discord. I'll send it as a second message because youtube acts weird with links in comments.
