Great article, fascinating insight into how these 2 clubs have developed a long term strategy for their respective clubs by accepting that wealthier clubs will always have the finances to pick of their best players, but by having a strategy of bringing in potentially valuable replacements from under the radar. It just goes to show that there is another more viable alternative to simply throwing money at the game, like so many championship clubs do

It’s quite interesting to see how effective analytics has been in improving the game and performances in football, but in American sports like baseball and NBA, everyone hates the data analysts because the game has become more efficient but ‘more boring’ and one dimensional as a result

Teemu Pukki - a free transfer, the best player in Champs 18/19 with 29 goals, top 3 this season with 26 goals. Double digit goals in PL despite 19/20 being horrorshow for Norwich. Took Finland to Euros, national hero. Perhaps the best free signing ever in Championship. Tim Krul, the GK, represents Dutch national team, the best GK arguably in Championship. Club's best player 19/20. Ben Godfrey £150k in 2016 sold to Everton for £25M in 2020 - would've been much more, but covid-19. Max Aarons, through Norwich's academy, club won't pick up phone under £30M. Ditto for Cantwell, Norwich's homegrown midfielder.

Since it's their first year in the Premier league and my first year following the Premier league, it's only natural that I follow Brentford and not a Top 6 club and enjoy the ride as the "Community Club" shocks the world.

Our star striker Pukki was a free transfer, Buendia who is now worth 40 mil was bought for 1.5, kenny McLean was 500k, Sorensen 900k, several other frees and a lot of sub million buys from Germany and around Europe. When we did land more established players they were loans. Remember the game against Man City their team was worth hundreds of millions and ours cost less than 10. I would say Norwich are the definition of moneyball and it’s why Stuart Webber is being eyed by much bigger clubs.

There's no doubt to me that the data driven Moneyball type analytics works in football, it shouldn't be used in total isolation however but Brentford and Barnsley among others prove the concept. It's something that more clubs need to catch on to.

For the last time….it’s not ‘moneyball’. It is a stats based concept to identify players with development potential….the Oakland project was to just find cheap,players (of any age and role in baseball) it it in the same field but not the same thing at all.

Norwich City have to be one of the best examples of the ‘money ball’ approach. Particularly under Stuart Webber & Daniel Farke. Yes everyone can criticise the yo-yo status of the club, but the fact they are always punching above their weight in a billionaires playground is something to be applauded and not ridiculed. Through a mixture of turning youth players into multimillion pound stars & smart, targeted player acquisitions through an intense statistical based scouting approach to highlight overachieving players in underachieving clubs, before physically scouting the most promising players. Which has enabled the club to regularly gain promotion to the Premier League, without spending hundreds of millions of pounds. The likes of Emi Buendia, Ben Godfrey, Teemu Pukki, Max Aarons, James Maddison, Todd Cantwell, Jamal Lewis probably being the most successful examples. Even Josh & Jacob Murphy made the club over £20m & the continuation of this approach has and will see youth players like Adam Idah, Daniel Barden, Andrew Omobamidele, Josh Martin, Sam McCallum, Bali Mumba, Sebastian Soto, Akin Famewo, Melvin Sitti, Tyrese Omoyote & a host of U18’s either having already stepped up to the first team or developing towards that goal. Any club that are thinking outside the box & working extremely hard to achieve success on the field with very tight budgets by developing a footballing identity & implementing a smart business model is both bold and ambitious. Fair play to all of them & congratulations to Brentford for winning the playoffs through their own version of a similar approach - all while playing great football along the way. Brentfords strategy is similar to ours in terms of pure recruitment. Financially we are miles apart though. Our approach is zero direct investment from owners and only spending what the club makes. Brentfords owner has pummelled about £100M in since they got promoted. If Brentfords strategy were similar to ours they would not have been as successful as they would not have been able to pay the wages required to keep the core of their squad. Barnsley strategy is low risk with variable levels of reward, whereas Brentfords is purely high risk, high reward (high risk because it only takes their investments to flop and they find themselves incurring a loss).

Good video, but barnsley's statistical approach to recruitment started back in 2014. The current owners have continued it but it was Patrick Cryne and his son who deserve credit!
