President Xi Jinping is China’s most powerful leader in decades. And his plans for the rising superpower loom large over the country and its politics.

Xi’s name has been attached to the country’s slogans and initiatives that reflect its newfound strength and identity, from Xi Jinping’s Chinese Dream to Xi Jinping’s Belt and Road Initiative. Xi’s influence was even codified into China’s constitution in 2017, when the Chinese Communist Party amended the document to include “Xi Jinping Thought” - the leader’s vision for China’s next 30 years.
Xi’s early presidency has been focused on using his newfound power to continue to combat corruption within the CCP. These corruption drives helped maintain the party’s popularity in China despite the country’s slowing growth rates.
More recently, Xi’s agenda has pivoted to foreign policy. Some observers say that for Xi, China’s strength will come from recovering the country’s dominance across Asia.
And Xi has long term plans to pursue more influence even further abroad. Projects like the “Belt and Road Initiative” are integral to Xi’s goal of turning China’s economic strength into political influence.
But how much else do we know about the most powerful leader China has had in decades?
We’ll take a look at Xi’s rise to power and how that shaped his ambitions for China and its place on the global stage.
What do you think about Xi Jinping’s rise to power? Will he be able to set China up as a perennial power on the world stage? Let us know in the comments, and as always, like and subscribe.

"...one of the most powerful...". No, THE most powerful person. I'm not certain it's wise to concentrate so much power onto one person. China may be dodging the bullet with Xi Jinping but there will be future leaders for whom term limits would be a very good idea.

A pretty fair coverage of him without the sensationalism seen in other channels or msm. China is undergoing major reforms and restructuring, in economy, politics, military and social sphere, and is generally going in the right direction. 1) When looking at China, you shouldn't see Xi as this all powerful leader, he has oppositions within the Party and interest groups that would see China's reforms slowed down. Xi's agenda can be simplified into one sentence "a Strong autocratic system, with rule of law to maintain legitimacy". sort of like a giant Singapore. To achieve this he cannot get in bed with western backed liberals, he also dislikes the old guards of the Party who champions communist orthodoxy, during his provincial tenures he was always posted in the coastal regions and enacted pro-business policies. so Xi's vision is that of the middle way. don't get in the bed with the western backed liberals, also don't get in bed with traditionalist communist. 2) People like Xi don't get to where they are without thinking about their legacy, and no, legacies of these type of people don't involve what you leave for your children, but what historians will say about you. it is safe to say Xi jinping will be the last Chinese leader to come to power through an opaque power struggle based on political patronage. By taking powers away from the party, he can first clean it up, then set up the necessary rules to institutionalize power transition. The result will be a streamlined efficient Autocratic system based on meritocracy instead of political patronage, only then can real rule of law can be cultivated. Their aim is to have something similar to the Singaporean system but without open elections. 3) A curious thing Xi has done since the 2018 constitution change, is that he has changed the role of Prime Minister, before Xi, the Prime Minister has the job of overseeing the economy, and other major roles according to whats needed at the time. The Prime minister was seen as firmly as the number 2 in charge aiding the President, but since Xi has side stepped the Politburo, by being the head of many other committees that runs the country, and giving major power boosts to the Vice President role, I do believe we are witnessing the very beginning of the separation of Presidency, , and the Prime minister's executive branch. This is an internal separation of power What I think will happen is that the position of Presidency and Party secretary after Xi steps down will be that of a guidance role, responsible for the general direction and strategic goals of China. The Legislative branch will be formed by the National people's Congress Standing Committee (NPCSC) the NPCSC will be responsible for internal votes that elects the Executive Branch which is the State Council headed by the Prime Minister. the executive branch will be responsible for the day to day governance of the country and implementing the directives of the President/ Party Secretary. This system completely sides steps the opaque Politburo, which is the source of behind the doors power struggle, and bring better governance to China.

That might be true, but I wouldn't trust anyone to have such power in any situation. Theoretically, a great leader could bring much prosperity to his country, and while I respect Xi for putting his country first, no one is perfect. What makes you think that he too won't fall into corruption like every other human being would in a situation of endless power? And even if he didn't his successors most likely will. I'm saying this because if you know anything of history and of human behaviour, then you would know this is the case. On top of that, the horrible, collectivist and cold ideology that built Communist China, though now smaller, still have a presence and is still dangerous as it is. China is known to infringe on freedom of speech and other fundamental human rights. If the witnesses are right, up to a million people could currently be sitting in deadly labour camps, simply because of their beliefs. What China is doing in Africa is double-edged too. While investing to make the African countries richer, healthier and stronger surely will benefit us all through global trade, it can also put China in a position where the Africans are in debt so much as to make them basically subject to China with its powerful military. Exploiting of vulnerable data through the internet is also a thing China could be doing. It is clear that technology in the western world is distressingly unprotected from espionage. One would be naive to think that someone out there not already knows everything about oneself, or could know if they wanted. This is from social media and apps that we willingly expose ourselves to, and essentially just let take our information. This could be of great use to anyone who wishes to harm the western world, China could be, or could become, one such actor. I don't know why I felt like writing this, you surely know this already. I just think it's foolish to trust China in this day and age.

@Nealrex Nor did I intend to. What he was doing was just explaining what China theoretically could get out of new reforms. I don't know enough, nor have the willpower, to add any flavour or critique to it. But I felt the need to add a perspective of what China and Xi could do that is negative to the rest of the world.

@@SuperEddyn then lets see what are the alternatives. 1) Xi wants to continues the old way, then why did he shake up the political landscape so much? he can simply kept the politburo system and enrich himself with the corrupt factions within the Party. btw there is no reports in any reputable western media that implicate Xi in any corruption scandal. even if Xi wanted to rule for life he can do that WITHOUT changing the constitution, because the most powerful position in Chinese politics is the Chairman of the Central Military Commission, that post does NOT have a term limit to begin with. Xi could've simply stepped down as president and party secretary after 2 terms and retain the Chairman of CMC and installing puppets, he can do all of that without even touching the constitution. BUT he did change it to prevent such scenario of Party elders wielding power behind the scene, because that's the cause for nepotism and corruption and power struggles. Xi by changing the Constitution is basically saying to the Party, "I'm here to stay for a while" so those who think they can wait him out without committing to reforms knows this. making sure that the Presidency, Party Secretary, and Chairman of CMC stays with the same person is the first sign of institutionalizing power and position. back in the 1980s China used to have a very chaotic political system where Presidents and Prime Ministers were mere political puppets, and factional struggles were destabilizing the country. 2) it's safe to assume Xi is loyal to the ideal that the Party should continue to govern China. so your assumption of him not enacting any reforms that institutionalizing the power transition process is totally wrong. because if you assume that his successors would abuse their position would mean that Xi hasn't reform the political structure, and thus have failed or he never intended to improve the governance of the Party. So your assumption is basically claiming that Xi wants the Party to fail because he does not want reforms. This is illogical to begin with, and also not the case in reality, since Xi has enacted sweeping reforms. So based on the solid assumption that Xi wants the Party to succeed, Xi's successor will NOT have the unlimited term, nor will his successors have the power he wields, because Xi would've have set up a reform process for a political system to prevent that. TO assume otherwise, you're basically saying Xi is either stupld that he can't see the obvious flaw of the current system of no term limits or wants the Party to crash and burn as soon as he leaves office. To put it simply, Xi is the last of his kind.

@@SuperEddyn China has always been a collectivist society, this has NOTHING to do with Communism, the fact that communism has a chance to succeed in China is BECAUSE, Chinese are collectivist to begin with. China is neither communist nor capitalist, it is what it has been for the past 2200 or so years. That is, a regulated economy with a large state sector, coupled with an autocratic system of centralized governance, Imperial China has never gone away, they are just under new management who just happened to name their Party the Communist Party of China. The system of China is still deeply Confucian, a system called "Confucianism on the outside, Legalism on the inside", Confucian rhetoric promotes unity obedience and social harmony, and Legalism uses Rule by law to enforce that Confucian system. this has been the case ever since 221 BC when the first Emperor of China reformed the realm into a centralized bureaucratic state. the CCP is not even a political party, it's a ruling organization, that has card carrying members bigger than the population of Germany at 90 million. the CCP does not represent their constituents because they have none, everything the CCP does they themselves are wholly responsible for because there are no previous administration or the opposition to blame. which is why the burden of accountability of the CCP is much greater than any other western political party.
@SuperEddyn
@SuperEddyn 5 жыл бұрын
@@obsidianstatue Let's just make this clear. I did not say anything regarding his reforms, he can reform whatever he wants. The only way, in my eyes, that he could reform as to make this not corrupt is by gradually removing power from the government and start to establish a democracy. If that's the case, then fair play to him. But we don't know his intentions, and it doesn't seem that he is going to give power to the people any time soon, considering the vast infringements on human rights that are currently happening. I just think that any type of society with one single supreme government (with whatever reforms it might have), where the collective is valued more than the individual, where freedom of thought is infringed upon, and where violence is used as a tool to keep the country in "check" is destined to corruption or poverty in the very least. In the worst case, it can lead to millions of people dead (which, mind you, has already happened once). They are gradually moving away from economic communism, which is why I think corruption and not poverty will be the end result. The point of Confucianism is fair, it is, without doubt, a core part Chinese culture and I completely agree that it might be the reason communism prevailed. But communism is nonetheless collective, and I'm not speaking of merely economic communism, which competes with capitalism, I'm speaking of the socialist ideas that see pure power of the government as the one biggest natural factor in socio-economic hierarchies. That very ideology prioritizes the collective over the individual, it's there nonetheless, whether or not Confucianism is there.

Furthermore, VPN is also available in China too which mean u can still using youtube inside china. By the way, I personally does not think the block websites is always bas thing. First, it allowed the national enterprise such as Tencent can able to survive in the business infant stage with lower competition. Secondly, it can also protect the people from these western propaganda contexts which is everywhere in the youtube, the countries like America advantages on media war due to higher global influence. It is dangerous that let people exposure under these propaganda contexts especially when China's education rate is still relatively low. I know u may think it's just a tricks that play by the evil communist party to controls its people's minds. But things are much more complex than that. U know how much propaganda contexts the countries like Taiwan and America posted in KZfaq such as the cults Falun gong. The people never really have much so call independent thinking before they receive a good education. They will may believe these cults which will cause a disaster in China. I know communist party are not perfect, but they are still pretty good political party(at least better than most of party in the world). Its hard to change ur minds, but anyway, best wish.

Last time I was in China, I saw a ton of Buddhist praying in their temples, Christians in their churches, and even some Catholics mixed in. Although China's socialist system is indifferent, it also provides more job opportunities and security for China's huge national group. As a Chinese public official, China's political corruption is very serious, but after the country's high-level, material Life will be completely provided by the government, and all the necessities of life will be uniformly allocated by the central government. Corruption will never happen at the top of the country, especially in the rulers who have strong political power. China is only investing in Africa and has not stationed troops. Compared with European countries and a large number of foreign garrisons in the United States, there is almost no Chinese garrison. This country only wants a better living environment and a more peaceful world. That is all.

A person who has gone through tough teenage years living in re-education camps, are now installing hundreds of them more in Tibet and Xinjiang regions, practicing even harsher measures on political dissents such as torturing them. Xi has had the 10-year presidency term limit removed for him, so that he can stay in power indefinitely. Superficially that made him more powerful, but not without repercussions, i.e., objections from people domestic and abroad. His intention to mimic and duplicate Mao in this fashion is a clear indicator that he is going backwards, reversing the minuscule political reform initiated by his own father, and imposed by Deng Xiaoping, upheld by the communist party for over 4 decades, followed by Jiang Zeming reluctantly, and Hu Jintao, hopelessly.
