One quick note about Caligula’s end. I am not clear on the overall numbers of the Julio-Claudia’s family that was purged, but it *does* include Caligula, his wife, his daughter, and several key supporters. Over the coming months others would be eliminated, not least due to Agrippina. While the dynasty would survive the end of Nero, it was a steady decline from the time of Caligula on

I’ve always wondered by the time the western Roman Empire collapsed were there any Julio-Claudians still around?

How would other romans have viewed the neck beard? Mark of status, does it paint Nero as an outsider, or is it mainly to differentiate himself from the main Julio-Claudian dynasty?
@TheFallofRome
@TheFallofRome Жыл бұрын
So, the beard is interesting. Our sources tell us, as far as we are aware, that Nero was usually clean shaven. But, the busts and coins sport the beard, and it’s not outside the realm of possibility that he wore it from time to time. This is all about performance art and propaganda. The beard showed his family history, something which was important to the Romans. But beards like this also appear to have been in style around this time-Domitian was sometimes shown with one-so it probably wouldn’t have been too odd to see him actually wearing a beard like this

Your videos are really good! I would love if you put in more visual stuff like "Kings and Generals" does with background drawings/paintings too. I know that probably costs a lot of money but if you can sometime in the future I would love it. Please keep making more videos. thank you and have a good one

A contrary opinion: while this may make your channel more appealing for Doin Them Numbers Stackin Them Views, beware of 'feature creep' and demographic-driven priorities. A huge part of what makes your stuff stand out as uniquely appealing is the - forgive me - relatively dry and academic approach, but delivered in an accessible and well-lectured way. Should your channel explode in popularity like it richly deserves, hiring an editor/animator could go a long way, but please don't let such a thing get in the way of your excellent research and presentation. There are already so many light-on-history-heavy-on-animation channels out there.

One of the reasons I unsubscribed from Kings and Generals was the stupid Age Of Empires sound effects. I prefer the podcast-like presentation of the Historian's Craft over this.

@@Arkanthrall I reallllllly HATE the horse noises from kings and generals. Same with the "peaceful birds chirping" noises. They are the worst. Besides that I really like Kings and Generals and Invicta and others. I think the more channels the better and I am so happy to see this one growing so fast! I just want more content because I'm greedy like that lol :]

A wonderful job of wedding modern historiography's more nuanced views and scepticism of propaganda, and that page-turner literary quality of Suetonius. Cheers dude, looking forward to the next part.

Would love to see a follow up on this looking at Nero’s rule. As you said, there’s such an overwhelmingly negative view of his rule in most historical accounts yet seemingly he became a figure of legend amongst the plebs. It seems quite hard to marry those two perspectives, especially given they both seem not only opposed, but are at extreme ends in terms of strength of conviction. He’s either a massiah-like figure who will one day return to save the day, or a despicable monster - the archetype of an evil tyrant. Pretty crazy when you think about it

I know you mentioned it here, But I would actually greatly appreciate a video discussing the innovations and rule of the Flavian emperors, and in what ways Vespasian and Domitian changed the nature of Roman governmental legitimacy and administration. A lot of people talk about the Julio-Claudians, And the Nervan-Antonine dynasty, But I feel like the Flavians are treated as a bit of a stop gap between these two famous dynasties, So hearing you mention a “Flavian revolution” really interests me. Got any literature or articles to recommend on the subject?

@@TheFallofRome Apparently Tiberius did some purging of senatorial Romans after Praetorian head Sejanus was condemned to death by the senate (31 AD) ..yet his purging seemed to include close associates of the Julians , in other words those close to Tiberius's own dynastic line..I wonder why? - I also wonder why Tiberius permitted an 'eques' (equestrian) Sejanus to be a consul with his name stamped on coinage... certain to meet the ire of many senators, some of which Sejanus purged when Tiberius retired to Capri.

@@TheFallofRome The assassination of Caligula was a confused affair. Chaerea, and the senators who backed him, may have intended to exterminate the imperial family, but most of The Guard opposed this. It's possible that Claudius himself, who had a strong party in The Senate, was the leader of a separate plot which had Praetorian support. It is said that Claudius had Chaerea put to death for the murders of Caesonia and Julia Drusilla rather than for assassinating Caligula whose death he may have been planning himself. A good many people were killed by Caligula's German bodyguard who were enraged by the death of their master, but I don't think anyone apart from Chaerea was officially punished.

I thought you kinda glossed over Messalina. You mentioned she died, but I think it would have been more accurate to say she was executed for treason.
@alanpennie
@alanpennie Жыл бұрын
Possible treason. Tacitus' account is very strange, and it's difficult to know what to make of it.
@alanpennie
@alanpennie Жыл бұрын
Messalina didn't exactly kill herself. According to Tacitus she was put to death by Narcissus (Claudius's secretary) for alleged adultery and treason. It was an extremely bizarre and murky episode.

when did roman start looking more white.. because medteranian people are not white. That is a gaul/germanic. Theres even evidence compared Romans non white to Northern Whites and southern blacks. saying roman was the perfect mix of traits. Bias of course but still saying something. Today in the west many latins look very white yet accused of not being so. I see Nero with his copper hair and i'm thinking this is a Gaul/Britian person. Lines have died out however. There use to be red haird Mayans as well. Genetics are odd and interesting. Or this just proves Women lie a lot.
