To all who think Pietragalla is less than awe-inspiring here: You're demonstrating the problem with dropping the acculturated trappings and manners of ballet to utterly inhabit the wildness of such a character (rather than skillfully and tastefully *depicting* that wildness, as seen in the Joffrey version): the dancers, critics, and audiences who inhabit the ecosystem of acculturation will icily insist that *she's doing it wrong*. There is no trace, no whiff, of wasp-waisted lady in leotard at the barre in Paris starchily plying her dainty pliés with perfectly tight hair bun and haughty countenance. Gone. Wiped clean. Here, instead, is a pagan primordial presence from the ancient Russian woods. The actual thing. And these f-ing people want their starchy French lady.

($$$$)
@rr7firefly5 жыл бұрын
@@morinomajou My reference is not to other artistic pieces of verifiable merit (Firebird being another) but to popular entertainment that requires no effort to consume (the same principle behind junk food). I made no comment about "dark and edgy" content of art being more worthy of our attention. You did. I also did not say that "light and pretty" things are fluff. You did. As you may have noticed, not everything that comes to a theater or is shown on TV is worth the time devoted to watching it. The distinction I am making concerns extending the range of valuable experiences that young people encounter.

It makes more sense when you see the whole ballet. This fragment is at the end. A group of maiden dances in circle, and the one who falls down first is the "chosen one". That chosen one has to dance to the death, otherwise the tribe will not survive. The elders or maidens would surround the chosen one, so she cannot escape alive.

+Chuck E. Jesus Oh, and Stravinsky himself LOATHED what Disney did with the dinosaurs, especially with Stokowsky "arranging" his music. Stravinsky described the resulting performance as "execrable."
@CoreyStudios20008 жыл бұрын
+Chuck E. Jesus And I heard that what you said about Jesus being sacrificed by his followers is false. Fact is that it was the Romans who crucified him, executing him for supposedly "disturbing" the peace in the Empire. His followers were weeping over his death, not celebrating it. Just because the Bible shows people sacrificing themselves in the Old Testament doesn't mean that the Bible promotes human sacrifice. In fact, Christianity, Roman Catholicism especially, is abhorrent towards that kind of backward pagan thinking. So what if Stravinsky loathed what Disney did? You ought to respect people with different beliefs before you get your fascist Dawkinite skull bashed by an angry mob of people that you enjoy taunting on.
