If you could watch the pack temps like me you would see the truck derates when the highest temp hits 50C, and THEN kicks in pack cooling. This is a similar max temp as Tesla, but the problem is it doesn’t attempt to cool till it’s too late. Rivian just needs to start cooling sooner, if not as soon as charging at least at a lower temp when charging. Similarly the pack will not accept full 200kW+ rate until the min temp is about about 22C and it can only warm It slowly at a loud 6kW. Watching pack temps live is super useful for understanding any EV…

I wonder if they've got a problem in the winter when the bottom plane of cells is cold from the air while the top plane of cell is warm from cabin heat and insulation. Rivian only has a single shared cooling plate for both cell planes. The upper and lower plane of cells could be fighting each other, one wanting to be heated up, the other wanting to be cooled down. This would only happen in the winter.

I have enjoyed your informative and unbiased information for many videos now and I only wish I knew you were going to be in Joliet as I live about 10 minutes from there and would’ve loved to see the R1T. I have had a deposit down on the R1S since November of 21 but have not seen either one in person. I didn’t go to Normal Illinois when I had a chance about a year ago and am kicking myself. I am so torn between keeping the R1S reservation (est delv date of Oct-Dec 2023 or switching to the R1T. I don’t have to have it immediately however I keep hearing so many people rave about the usability of the truck. Gear Tunnel, Short or Long Bed, Massing Frunk and so many other reasons. I’m currently driving a Tesla 2022 Model S LR and it’s been a great vehicle but being so low to the ground and wanting to not throw shrubs and rock and stuff in the hatch, I find myself so envious of the possibilities with the R1T. Anyway…keep up the good work and the entertaining videos. I’m a tall guy, 6’ 2” and thought i’d throw that in there as I know I should have a vehicle that I step up into rather than lower myself into. I only wish I realized how low the S would be - even with the suspension raised, and well, i’m in my upper 50’s. Love the Tesla, it’s a work of art and a lot of fun, but I believe I was meant more for the SUV or Truck. Oh how I wish I could see one or both soon. Take care and happy/safe travels.

@@Factory400 I'm curious to hear more. Hyundai/Kia seem to have done an amazing job with no drawbacks (and at even cheaper price points). Are you referring to the lack of off-the-shelf parts for 800V systems, or maybe something else?
@Factory400
@Factory400 Жыл бұрын
@@andrey_climb_bike_ski designing for 800v requires bleeding edge MOSFETs along with unique design of the PCB, interconnects, etc. It is also generally an efficiency hit because the switching elements dissipate the most heat while they are transitioning from low voltage to high voltage - in this case they have to slew 800v. Many of efficiency related characteristics of a MOSFET are compromised in order to get higher voltage capability. I am not sure how Hyundai architected their system, but maybe they are using a dual 400v setup where propulsion is 400v and only charging is 800v by way of putting the dual 400v rails in series only for charging. That would be a reasonable compromise to get the faster charging at a lower lower cost than a full 800v propulsion system. Any idea if there is a place to get more engineering details on Hyundai?

I'm not an EV owner so not sure if they have this, but like ICE cars that may have an octane sticker inside the fuel cover, how about a "MAX Charge Rate" decals at the charge port?
@insanityideas
@insanityideas Жыл бұрын
I am an EV owner and that would be a great start. Although it's complicated by charger operators stating power capabilities in Kw when the actual limitation is amps through the cable. So they will list the KW output at 800volts when most cars are 400volt and therefore can draw only half as many KW from the charger. This is why some people will seek out a faster charger because they plugged their 130kw capable car into a 130kw charger and only got a peak of 60kw - it used to be chargers were advertised based on their 400 volt capability, but now 800 volt chargers exist the rating system doesn't line up when most cars are requesting 400volt. For the majority of people those 350kw chargers are actually 175kw at 400volt. Sadly a sticker won't fix this, but labelling everything in Amps would, and that's the correct way to express the limitations of a charger (car limitations are KW based).

I have a Tesla Model Y and to be honest, I don’t have those issues. But I think it’s a GREAT idea honestly
@insanityideas
@insanityideas Жыл бұрын
@@Soh90 I have a model 3 but a European one so I can use the Tesla chargers or other brand ones. The Tesla system "just works" without further explanation, but until all other chargers are "superfast" then some guidance might be required. Charger labelling is so optimistic that a 130kw charger will typically only give me 40kw. The best solution to that I have seen is actually just calling them "medium" and "superfast", keeps it non techy. Really though people using chargers with a higher capability than their car is not the end of the world, it still works. And I think it's information the average driver doesn't need as it just complicates the transition to electric by making it seem more complicated than it is - hell we still have new Audi drivers trying to work out how to use Tesla chargers back when they weren't open to other cars, because they didn't want to join the queue for the other brand charger, so if they don't understand that how will they understand charger power labelling.

What about if when the Kia arrived at the charge point that was the only dispenser not in use - do you expect them to wait in a line for a 150kw or lower rated charger when there is a higher speed one their car cannot handle not in use? Maybe it should also be the other way round too - your car is a 300kw capable car so you must not block a 50kW charger for a working day while your car charges slowly?
@insanityideas
@insanityideas Жыл бұрын
@@timoliver8940 I am still puzzling over the charger layout where it looks very difficult to park in a way that allows use of the 150kw and 350kw chargers at the same time. Looks like you have to block someone in, assuming they haven't had to park badly for the cable to reach. Very confusing compared with a 1 charger per parking space layout they could have had. This is a justification for all chargers beening the faster variety, not a justification for drivers to "know their limits", because of course they are just going to use what's free at the time they arrive. I have had to ask people to stop charging and move their car before now because they are parked so badly they block a charger. And it's not really their fault when parking bays aren't painted to line up with the chargers or the chargers are installed too close together as appears at this location.

and I'm still waiting on the advent of brand new 'stations', just for us EVs, which are basically identical to gas stations, with all pull thru lanes, convenience store, bathroom, snacks, and the like, all while convenient off the road, and not having to 'navigate' walmart parking lots. If every Walmart had at least one EA, we might be having a different discussion, but it seems that rather than spacing out the infrastructure to accommodate more areas, EA likes to 'blanket' a single site. I'm not sure that's the best approach. Maybe Dollar General, with it's massive expansion and rural approach, might be well served to place a single fast charger at the far corner of every one of their parking lots. My Tesla Model 3, charges at 250KW nearly every time I stop at a Supercharger. Even from Utah to WI, in August at 106F, my Tesla charged at 250K while averaging 240Wh/m. That means a 15-20 min charge every 200 to 300 miles while charging at 1,015 miles per hour. I have charge over 300 times over 4 years and 125K miles. I downloaded all of the charge stats in CSV form and tabulated and graphed it. My average charge time was under 20min and average cost was $24 (if I would have paid). I have been part of the electric car scene since 1997, with most of them being DIY conversions until 2008. If you buy anything other that a Tesla Model 3 or Model Y, you are going to suffer on trips. Tesla solved their thermal management and charging issues years ago. New Model S and X, are better that any non-Tesla brand for trips. But the Model 3 and Y are just next level when Traveling. On that Trip from WI to Utah and Back, the Model 3 did the trip within 10 minutes of a Prius with over 600 miles of ICE range and fast fill ups.

We are still the guinea pigs when it comes to the infrastructure and vehicles themselves. And thus far, like you said, Tesla has been the only ones to really nail it down. People just assume and take for granted the thermal management in EV's. It is really a complicated thing to precondition and to cool these batteries. I am shocked when I see people just assume that it all just works. Maybe if your in a Tesla it is of much less worry, but it really is a huge factor. Also the regen ability gets lost if the battery is too cold also. I am glad you keep trying to point this stuff out to people. That is too bad with the Rivian. It is early days for the Rivian vehicles and they have lots of learning to do. Hopefully they can get this addressed. Tesla or ICE FTW. 🙂

But in typical Tesla fashion don't expect it any time soon. They take years before they produce anything they have announced. So for now we have to live with the Model 3 and Y and the tax breaks after they reduced the prices. Used prices have not corrected yet. People are still in denial that Tesla chopped prices and now the price they are asking for their used car is as much as a new one with the tax break. I will give them credit for being able to make their own chargers. But it should work better whe you make all components of the chargers and only had 1 car to make it work with. Then 4 years later we get a 150,00 dollar model s . They had people set a credit card in the app when buying the car. If people are smart you can do the same thing with ccs. Each car company wouldn’t want to have their own ford charging network or Gm charging network. Tesla kept adding but they had no cross country network. It is easy 11 years later to compare a company forced to put in chargers over a 4 year period that had to work with all cars not just Tesla but tesla still hasn’t opened to non Tesla in the usa . They were forced to in europe by the governments. They like to say what they are doing and always delay. No roaster or cyber truck

I heard of this idea for faster energy transfer to vehicles, instead of using CCS chargers, the energy would be transferred through a much more robust and efficient means instead. Rough estimates and simulations illustrated a rudimentary charging station of this variety can deliver many thousands of kw’s per hour when charging, all while using existing vehicle equipment. I believe the name of this system or it’s substrate was “diess cell” hopefully will bring many benefits in mobility to EV truck owners everywhere.

Kyle, you really don't want the cells to get above 50ºC because that risks thermal runaway. LG says max cell temp of 45ºC while fast charging. Hey Kyle, I feel your pain and frustration. I do have one answer for you and that is that everything will be perfect when all the stars and planets line up but they won't and if they did the perfection would still be fouled up by some new EV owner wanting to charge where they want to because bigger is better they will want to charge at the 350 sized unit, you know what if there was a 1000 sized unit they would pick it regardless of what they drive leaving you to charge at the 150 unit. The moral of the story is it will never be perfect, if close there will be an idiot spoiling it and to try and fix that is like doing the same but expecting different which is tge definition of insanity. But I do like your efforts and videos 👍

I do not travel far enough to need fast charging but I would like to drive to work with my Rivian starting at a higher efficiency level rather than the 0.6 KW/hr. By the time I get to work about 20 miles away I never get to a high level. Would it make sense to go into the vehicle 30 minutes early and set a course for the one DCFC about 25 miles away and it would precondition to warm my battery up before I head to work and thus start at a much higher efficiency level?

Raising the max temp will hurt battery life in the long run quite significantly. There are only limited sensors in the battery pack (far less than some other cars) and if you are seeing a reading of 45 degrees you can be fairly confident that there will be areas without a probe that are hotter or even much hotter. Always better to play it safe and charge a little slower. What they really need to do is just improve the cooling and temp sensor system on newer vehicles.
