Jock Hamilton-Baillie, Royal Engineers, was captured in France in 1940 and worked on escaping from German prisoner-of-war camps. He came very close to making it to Switzerland, but found himself in the wrong field at the border and was re-captured and sent to Colditz. This is a lecture he used to give to help raise money for the Red Cross to which he was eternally grateful for helping prison life. As an engineer he provides a captivating insight into the the mechanics of escaping, the obstacles that had to be overcome, and life at Colditz.

You do realise that if you’re on the winning side, you don’t need to escape.

Absolutely amazing story ! My mother used to look after his wife “letty” Many years ago. And I remember going round their house with my mum as a very small boy. Interestingly, my mother was cooking something the other day and the smell reminded me of what she cooked at their house one day for them. It brought back memories of jock and letty. Which then me and my mum spoke about, which led me to research this. Funny how a simple smell can bring back a memory that leads to an interesting journey. What a pleasure it was to hear his amazing story. Thank you for posting the video.
