The cannabis industry brings in billions of dollars in legal revenue, with Big Cannabis companies leading the charge. However, cannabis offenders remain incarcerated and federal restrictions prevent them from legally benefitting from this thriving industry. BOWL PAC founder, Justin Strekal, and author of Bending the Arc: My Journey From Prison to Politics, Keeda J. Haynes, join host Roy Wood Jr. to discuss the complicated road to federal cannabis legalization.

So sad, so wrong. I saw a news clip the other day of an older gentleman who was just released from prison, after serving more than a decade for a marijuana offense. On his way out of prison and into the nearest town, there was a huge billboard advertising a local dispensary that would deliver your purchases to your home. He was crestfallen, I was heartbroken to see this.

The guilty by "should have known". I have personally experienced this. For the same thing, signing for packages. I lived in a neighborhood that package theft was uncommon. I had friends that lived in areas of high package theft. They often asked if they could have their packages sent to my address. Almost all of the packages were filled with legal stuff like electronics. I argued, why should I have known 1 out of 100 packages had HIDDEN drugs in it? I mean it made it through the mail system after all, and none of those individuals get charged with should have know. I was still convicted on should have known.

So, our latest ex-President might not have been guilty of treason because he might not have known that inciting an attack on Congress was treasonous so he should not stand trial, but a naive student should have known she was signing for illegal packages and needed to serve more than five years?

Do you hear the way Keedas voice cracks when talking about the experience? It is evidence of how a person is traumatized by the legal system. It's a result of psychological manipulation that results in chronic PTSD that has severe neurological health ramifications that is rooted in injustice many are victimized by, myself included. As a result we are psychologically forced to never look back however it is our experiences that make us leaders to effect real change. Always stay focused forward Keeda. You can't change people but you can change laws.

She's a trooper. She'll get better and better at addressing the issues, both insightful and articulately, and make a big difference. We saw how views on alcohol changed over the years, mostly through grass-roots organizations like MADD. We need NORML and MAPS and similar organization to get the information out to a wider audience, but for different reasons than it being dangerous. Untold thousands die each year due to alcohol use, both short-term and chronically; whereas, to my knowledge NO ONE has ever died from cannabis intoxication. Just the opposite of the alcohol effect, cannabis makes people mellow, creative, and they tend to drive much slower! If at all! The support for cannabis can only grow.

I actually had to undress in front of a doctor because she was not gonna examine me, just a little chit chat. It is horrible to be treated like a 5th class citizen regarding pain management. If more seniors could experience the positive effects of cannabis on pain, anxiety and depression it would be voted legal.

The thing is people can grow their own carrots, so people can grow their own marihuana if it is legal. And if they don't have the space to do it, consumer groups can be formed.

One of the biggest reasons why federal legalization of marijuana is such in uphill battle is because most legal marijuana distributers and companies don't really support it. Since marijuana is currently only legal according to state, right now the legalized marijuana industry is made up of smaller and midsized distributers that operate on a state level. But if it were to be legalized on a federal level, big companies like Budweiser and former cigarette companies would immediately move in and take over. The cigarette companies in particular would completely take over the market as they already have the fields, equipment, harvesting infrastructure, and would just have to change the crop from tobacco to marijuana. Marijuana distributers know this and are hesitant to support federal legalization which would lead to the end of their businesses. On the other hand, marijuana being federally illegal means that marijuana companies can't keep their money in federally insured banks (that would be money laundering so no member FDIC bank will take their money directly). It also means that marijuana distributors are taxes at the highest income tax rate with no deductions since illegal income is still subject to income tax (that's how they got Capone) So in deciding whether or not support federal legalization, marijuana companies have to weigh not being able to put their money into banks and high tax rates against potentially losing their business to huge corporations. That's why a lot of them are attempting to come up with alternative ways to hold their money. Some are trying to creating their own private "banks" that they insure themselves or converting to cryrocurrency. Others just go with the traditional route of keeping their money in foreign banks that don't ask questions. None of these options are risk free, and in any case you are still subject to the highest tax rate. Plus, all of these alternatives banking options can be viewed by the IRS as sign that you are engaging in tax fraud so even if you are setting aside a third of all your income as cash just to pay the taxman, you may still get audited over and over again because you keep the rest of your money in shady places! Still a whole lot of marijuana companies would rather deal with all of these inconveniences than risk losing their entire marketshare by supporting federal legalization. And now you know 😁

Thanks for this report, it was very illuminating. So what's the best course to take? Are legislators even aware of this? It would seem to be an issue similar to the social equity aspect of current cannabis laws. Can't they do something legislatively about keeping Big Tobacco and Big Alcohol out, or limit it somehow?
