The Road to Mandalay - Myanmar (Burma)
Our driver had clothes that had been donated in Yangon , we distributed them in the villages we passed through as our road journey progressed.
We set off from Yangon on the start of our 14 day minivan tour heading to Mandalay and Inle Lake. This is some of the sights on our drive and our stop at Mandalay.
The minivan and driver hire was incredibly cheap. A highly recommended method of traveling around Myanmar. We booked our driver from the Sule Pagoda area.
At the time of travel, 2005, there was only 1 cashpoint machine in Yangon, which was hugely expensive. Travellers cheques couldn't be cashed anywhere except the Traders Hotel - Yangon, again, very expensive. Literally all of our money had to be in cash (US Dollars) for the whole trip.
We had no Smart phones, they weren't even a thing then, no Facebook or other social media, no internet access at our finger tips like we have today. If we found an internet cafe, we had email, that's it.
All of our planning was done with Lonely Planet guide books and from other travellers we exchanged information with along the way, we would also exchange Guide books!
In the Burmese language, "Myanmar" is simply the more formal version of "Burma." The country’s name was changed only in English. During our stay in 2005 we avoided staying at or using any facilities or attractions connected to the military generals or their families.
