Hello and thanks again for joining us on another edition of SUMO PRIME TIME. The May Tournament is in the books but the excitement from the 15-day competition still lingers in our minds. One thing that’s still fresh in our memories is the 27-year-old Kiribayama from Mongolia rising to the occasion to receive a much-coveted promotion to the second-highest rank of Ozeki. When I spoke to Kiribayama before the tournament, he sounded pretty confident. He told me that as long as he’s able to execute his style of sumo, there should be no problem collecting enough wins to clear the promotion benchmark. And he didn’t disappoint. Way to go Kiribayama! With the promotion, he becomes the sixth Mongolian to reach the second-highest rank. It’s an elite club: Asashoryu, Hakuho, Harumafuji, Kakuryu, and Terunofuji, and now him. Congratulations Kirishima! Every Mongolian Rikishi that has reached Ozeki has then went on to become Yokozuna. Pressure burst pipes....or makes diamonds.

All of 6 Mongolian Ozekis was promoted to the rank of Yokozuna. I believe Kiribayama would be one too.

Much respect to ozeki Kirishima. I didn't think he would get there, I always thought Hoshoryu was more likely to become an ozeki (I still think he will become an ozeki one day). But Kirishima persevered and went stubbornly after his goal. An Emperor's Cup winner, and now an ozeki. He's already immortalized himself in the world of sumo. Anything on top of this would be a bonus. May he hold the rank well and long, or get the ultimate one. Congratulations are naturally due to his oyakata Michinoku as well, for having coached his deshi to the rank of ozeki (after having been one himself). It was great to see the pride and satisfaction in the oyakata's face. Job well done. Last but not least, big congretulations to Kirishima zeki's parents for having brought such a warrior to this world and raised him well. What an unforgettable day for all of them.

My late Companion Jeff also liked Kiribayama right from his start. He saw something special in Kiri and always just KNEW he would get to the top. I still like to think my Jeff is watching sumo from Eternity and cheering, "That's my man. Go Kiri GO!!" 😊

Kiri vs Hoshoryu should be super fun to watch for a long time. I hope we'll get to see them go at it as Yoko vs Yoko. I also wonder which one will be the first to figure out how to bring Teru down.

They are both favorites of mine, along with Asanoyama and soon enough Ochiai. It was a great battle between Kiri and Teru, the San'yaku is quite powerful now and getting stronger.

Thanks Hiro for highlighting Kiri's May basho. I used to say "love me some Kiribayama". Now I'll have to say "love me some Kirishima". Winning the May basho would have been nice but achieving ozeki rank was his goal and Kiri achieved it. I wish him success as Ozeki Kirishima. As his steady progress up the banzuke has shown, he is achieving excellence with his brand of sumo. I wonder if he has the same burning desire as Terunofuji to experience being a yokozuna. He has to figure out how to beat Terunofuji. With Kakuryu's guidance and his own hard work, Kirishima can become Yokuzuna.

I feel the Mongolian Sumo wrestlers, have such a deep wrestling culture. Which they bring in the ring, you tend to see more throws, leg assists and strong grappling techniques, than the Japanese Sumo wrestlers. I really got the Sumo bug during the pandemic lockdown, I watch the all 6 tournaments faithfully. It’s such an amazing sport. May God richly bless everyone 🇮🇱✝️🇺🇸!

I have already taken a note of him prior Teru became Yokozuna. Did not know 3 years back he was same stable as Kakuryu, but that would also then explain to me how versatile he was. Congratz Kirishima, and now hoping for 2 back2back basho wins....to Y before 30.

Question: I'm a new fan so there are things I don't understand. My understanding as that to be aligeble to become Ozeki one should score 3 tournament as a sekiwake in a row with a totala score of at least 33 wins (and never less then 10 wins). Wasn't Kiribayama sekiwake only 2 tournament? In any case, fully deserved!

Good observation! The main reason is probably that Kiribayama was consecutively getting kachi-koshi as a Komusibi since quite some time, but couldn't be promoted to Sekiwake as usually there are only two Sekiwake slots (the current state of several Komusubi and Sekiwake is very atypical, but I like it). Because of this, his Komusubi wins count as well. However, there seems to be no general rule that the 33+ wins over three tournments all have to be as a Sekiwake. When Tochinoshin was promoted in 2018, his first of the three tournaments was from M3w, but he won the Yusho that tournament. Terunofuji in 2021 also had one tournament as a Komusubi and two as Sekiwake.

They typically need to be in Sanyaku for the three-tournament run, so since he started his run at the rank of Komusubi, it still counts. There have been some instances where a rikishi started his run in the top Maegashira ranks, but those circumstances are extraordinary and very rarely happen.

Now a days you wouldn't need 5 judges to see who've just won or lost. Instead you have to use a modern marvel of high tech. called Computer that is sure to judge it w/ absolute certainty. But they have been continued to reject it. So adamant regrettably!!!,,,,Anyone agree?,,,,,(11/05/23)

Does NHK intend to make sumo coverage more accessible internationally? or are programs like SUMO PRIME TIME the full extent of what NHK is willing to show? this channel is great as an addendum to watching tournaments, but tournaments are currently very difficult to watch outside of Japan.

Im in Ireland and the I get NHK world on my television package, we get 30 minute highlights of the top division matches every day that they take place and a longer version on the last day. I wish we could see more of the lower ranked matches but I think alot of places dont get the coverage that we do so I am happy.

It's a pun! That fish is a red sea bream, or "tai" in Japanese. The word "omedetai" can refer to an auspicious or happy occasion. So when celebrating a yusho win or a promotion to Ozeki or Yokozuna, the man of the hour holds up the celebratory fish.
