New Orleans, 1984. A young delinquent is killed accidentally by his accomplice during a robbery attempt. George Toca is his best friend. He is arrested, sentenced to life imprisonment and sent to the harshest penitentiary of Louisiana.
Based on stories from the innocence network, a worldwide organisation dedicated to exonerating the wrongfully convicted, this four-part series explores the investigations and the human cost: the emotional impact experienced by those convicted and their families.

The state was avoiding paying him compensation by making him confess to a crime he didn't commit. Sad ... The record of being a murderer stays with him?

That’s exactly what the state did. That’s horrible and sad.😔 Sometimes because of our own honesty and what we know we would not be able to live with. We automatically think other’s are the same when that’s furthest from the truth. I would not be able to live with allowing him to stay in prison for all those years. Then when things start to get heated with IPNO behind him 10 toes down strong,💪🏾 they think about all the money 💵💴💰the state will have to pay out. The public humiliation and apologies due etc… They made him an offer they knew would be hard for him to resist smh.🤦🏾 Just pathetic! Thank God🙏🏾 he picked up trades and his degree while wrongfully convicted. And in today’s society it’s not as hard to be your own boss. He got this and I’m very proud of him.🥰😍🙌🏾 God bless you chicken and your loving family. ~Blessings~❤️😊✌🏾

It's all about a legal concept called "finality". This concept ridiculously assumes that a jury is infallible, that a jury is not capable of rendering an incorrect guilty verdict. As such, appeals after conviction Can NOT be based Only on claims of innocence because, remember, a jury's verdict is infallible and therefore it's "final" too. This means that all appeals must be based on the convict having received an unfair trial in some way, and ONLY That. This absurd concept of "finality" exists in all 50 states and in Fed Court too as far as I know. Furthermore, unlike the UK and Canada, America has no official national review board for possible wrongful convictions, where an argument that the jury just got it wrong might carry more weight ... jkulik919@gmail.com

Dear Susan Koech: At MurderData.org, you'll discover that 33% (1/3) of all American homicides since 1965 remain unsolved. Translation = The police are Just SO Desperate to improve this Terrible Rate Of Unsolved Homicides that they are willing to put innocent people into prison to accomplish it. Remember that for statistical purposes a case is "solved" whether the person going to prison actually committed the crime or not. And think about how high the rate of unsolved American homicides would be if police weren't actively and deliberately putting innocent people in prison for murder. Just remember in all your dealings with police, Susan, that the job of police is not to solve crimes but to put people into prison, and they really don't care who that is, even if it's YOU. ... jkulik919@gmail.com

It is unconscionable to think that prosecutors still wanted to foist their miscarriage of justice on a man for whatever deficiencies he may have in the eyes of these prosecutors to deny him “justice”. Now is the time to look up for the justice and judgement from above.
@nicknickleton-kumordjie4

I think all reasonable and peace loving people would hail the work of the law officers who were involved in this case. Unfortunately, there is more to be done. The law officers must write to the Governor of the State of Louisiana for an order to squash the plea deal by the State as represented by the Prosecution, first as the deal was unconscionable, secondly, as the deal was not predicated on any finding of wrong doing but by an offer that was crucial to the human experience. Another 30 years, which the defendant cannot risk but for prospective freedom that he can see. All because the Supreme Court was going to weigh into the matter and the State of Louisiana feared its reputation was at stake based on the more conscienable mind set of the Supreme Court. The anathema that some people have is to see a wrong corrected and compensation paid to a victim. There must be a greater voice of ordinary citizens to call on the Governor who is seen as the fount of honour, integrity, equity and good governance with good conscience to boot. Righting a wrong is the best thing to do in today’s society on God’s greened earth.

Since they practically forced him under duress to admit to the crime, it gave the sorry state of Louisiana free money to give to another crooked DA, more corrupt so-called law enforcement officers and (un)detectives so that they can go about doing as little as possible at what they are supposed to be getting paid to do. (And) then go out and do it all over again! What got my blood boiling was that they did NOT mention the sorry-behind DAs name, or any of the investigators, the judge or the other victims who were HIGHLY INFLUENCED by the crooked cops. You would think that now, especially now, that good-ol’-boy network would get their act together, maybe gain a conscience, find Jesus and confess to their part in all of their wrong-doings in the capacity of their jobs and then go about making things right! I have more that I want to say but the fact that the foolishness continues everyday has got my heart broken and has given me a mean headache. Mr. Toca, if you’re reading this, please know that in spite of the state of Louisiana justice system betraying you, they could not break you! I hope that with all that you’re trying to catch up on (your stolen life) that you take time out for yourself. Take a cruise with your family and enjoy yourself, you so deserve it! Everyone who saw to it that George was convicted of a murder that he didn't commit will never have to face their crimes. He was further humiliated by having to sign a false admission that protects those who saw him falsely convicted. George is 47 years old now and can never be given back the life he should have had and he'll never hear "we were wrong" or "we apologize" or "you deserve to be compensated". Still, George is living his best life with each and every day. He has incredible character and ability to stand tall in the face of all that adversity. This is an example of the failure of the court system and the total apathy of many lawyers and judges. In my case (not a criminal case), I was made to appear guilty in a case where a 13 year old child trespassed on my property, falsely claimed that my dog had bit her, and when the lawyers got involved, the immediate reaction of all in the court was that I had to be guilty, and the child was the victim, even though the child changed her story repeatedly during the investigation. The final result was that my insurance company elected to settle out of court, my dog was taken and executed, and now I have a record for the rest of my life, of being "an owner of dangerous canines." The lawyers hired by Allstate Insurance (my homeowners insurance at the time), told me that Allstate wanted to settle, and that I would have to go along, but it was no big deal, as there was no criminal charge. Then Allstate cancelled my insurance and now I'm paying far higher rates for homeowners insurance, for the rest of my life. I will never trust the courts or lawyers again.

What I find even more disturbing is how many such cases exist out there. Just think about how many people suffer injustices.

I wouldn't have signed that document if it was me!! Although it's not easy to say that, it isn't easy to live life free on the outside either, having claimed guilty due to no other choices and have a permanently stained record now which makes employment nearly impossible!! I would've refused to sign that deal, and continue fighting for justice! I can understand how badly this man wanted his freedom, but I'm also sure it isn't all good with him, and some compensation from the state would have been very noble too, for all the life he lost! Idk how I could come to terms with myself if I'd have spent 30 years of my life in prison being wrongly convicted, then being released one day, but still having to promise the state that I won't try sueing them for their injustice, which in my opinion, it's enough to turn someone like me for instance, into a "law abiding citizen" seeking righteous justice!!

I was in Louisiana for almost a year. It was so sad to hear, just in regular conversation the amount of families that have innocent family members in Angola. It’s just so normal to them. When they would speak of them, I would be dying inside just listening. And there is nothing they can do. The mother I was staying with, her son got life for something he didn’t do and the worst part is the lawyers tricked them into pleading guilty. I wished so bad I could do something, but without money it’s impossible. It is so sad. My heart breaks 💔💔💔.

SO "Innocent Project" couldn't prove the innocent man's innocence and made him accept the charges that he never done. And real murderer is out there, among us, sitting in front of screen, crunching chips...

They could have been successful with the Supreme Court case but the legal process would have taken many many years without guarantee that he would be exonerated. Thev plea bargain option guaranteed him immediate freedom. It's so sad how the system failed him.

The district attorney’s office who offered George that deal absolutely disgusts me. They let the known real killer go free just to save face and not to have to pay compensation for imprisoning an innocent man after a sloppy, pretty much non-existing investigation. I don’t know how these people can sleep at night.

So sad to hear he was wrongfully accused of a crime he never committed. They had no evidence to back their case they just grabbed the person that was there at the time of crime. What made me angry was how they got him to plea guilty without compensation or clean slate
