Raw Footage Video 2: • Djedi Robot Raw Footag...
Back in 2011, scientists developed a robot that has successfully navigated the delicate, labyrinth shafts of the Great Pyramid - in an attempt to solve one of the big mysteries in Egyptian archaeology.
They brought together cutting edge robotics with ancient history, and it features in this documentary,
‘The Robot, The Dentist and The Pyramid’, where we follow a group of research engineers involving the University of Leeds who accepted a challenge to build a robot capable of exploring inside the pyramid.
The lightweight robot had to get into a shaft that is just 20 cm by 20 cm, smaller than a sheet of A4 paper, and manoeuvre along its 60 metre length. The challenge was to survey and film what was inside - and crucially, not cause any damage.
The film reveals intricate hieroglyphics or workers marks that had never been seen before. To coincide with the release of the film, the scientists have made available all nine hours of the video so it can be studied by archaeologists and ancient historians. These are linked above.
The Great Pyramid, the focus of their work, is the biggest and oldest of the three pyramids that stand on the outskirts of Cairo in Egypt. It is believed to have been built around 4,500 years ago.
Over the years, various archaeological teams have explored the pyramid, reaching what is known as the Queen’s Chamber.
Those archaeological digs found, hidden behind a false wall, a narrow shaft that climbed at a 40-degree angle up into the pyramid.
But those earlier explorers had caused damage trying to get into the shaft.
Jump forward to 2010 and Rob Richardson, Professor of Robotics at Leeds, is the technical lead of an expedition to explore the inside of the pyramid.
He and a small group of colleagues had accepted a challenge thrown down by Hong Kong dentist and inventor Dr Tze Chuen Ng to design and build a robot that could survey the shaft and not cause any damage to the pyramid.
Developing the robot took five years.
The meticulous design paid off. The robot was able to get inside the shaft and record exclusive footage of the inside.
About 50 metres along the shaft - several metres before what we think is the end - there is a stone put in place to block further access. We do not know what it is blocking access to. We were able to get a camera past the stone - it revealed a small chamber with intricate symbols painted onto the floor.
Given the artwork, it is likely the shaft served a bigger purpose than an air shaft. But what that purpose is remains a mystery.
The project to understand the Great Pyramid was cut short because of growing security problems in Egypt.
Professor Richardson commissioned independent filmmaker William Westaway to use the video that had been captured to make a film about the project and here it is exclusively on the Ancient Architects channel.

Where do we use pipes nowadays, where did the builders intend - water? Warm air moving into the chimney comes into contact with the cold chimney walls, causing condensation.

Why are the handles on the inside, and why are they made from copper? Could it be to measure the water lvl in the shaft? If water touches the copper handles and they are connected to something electric, they would short circuit, thus indicating the water has reached the handles...

Hi Richie - I'm part of the team that made the film. Just for the record - Zahi Hawass was very keen on the robot's progress and made numerous appearances in the chamber to see what was going on. He also instructed the team not to go through the hole until he was present - so he was actually there for the hole bit - but not directly on camera. There wasn't much footage of him on the whole and he didn't say much so he wasn't included in the film. I understand there is a lot of speculation about him - but from what I know - he was super keen to see what was through the hole and (from what I heard) a bit underwhelmed with only finding a small cuboid chamber. So, make of that what you will...

British explorer Howard Vyse worked on the Giza plateau starting in 1837. 1. He discovered red markings painted inside the great pyramid. 2. He, with the help of Giavonni Caviglia, explored several shafts inside, most of which wound up in a well of water below the structure. (Egyptologists have posed this as a "new possible find"; namely that the structure was used as a well, and also as a possible power source). 3. Vyse and his team made extensive notes on the "Fourth pyramid of Geza" (sic); which egyptologists are claiming to have recently discovered. *That said, does anyone else have input or feedback regarding this? Is it well known that the Ministry of Antiquities is counterfeiting archeological finds, possibly to boost tourism? **I remember Zahi Hawass pretending to "find" a discovery made by Andrew Collins in 2008, at the Tomb of the Birds.

Watch around 1 hour 35-43 mins on Djedi Files video Part 2... The wall/block directly opposite the “door” looks totally covered in salt deposits to me. You can even see moisture reflecting. That is why it has the strange texture, but the left and right walls and the back of the “door” are not covered it salt. The Queen’s Chamber walls were also covered in salt in the 19th century. So the question is, what is the salt covering up? And why is salt localised onto this section only... Hmm...

Spectacular! And now more mysteries than answers. Among those: is he wall on the other side of the blocking stone a deadend, indicating where the shaft simply ends, or is it another blocking stone? if so, can a te!escoping drill probe that as well? Perhaps most importantly, will Egypt ever allow another similar exploration? And what's the latest on the Scan Pyramids robotic exploration of the newly found void? Or a probe beyond the original Great Pyramid entrance? So many questions; things are curiouser and curiouser. Hat's off to TC and his terrific team.

This was epic. Finally seeing the back of the blocking stone and seeing those amazing loops on the pins. That one stone is a mystery all of its own. Its existence makes no sense, and then those ochre marks on the floor. The Egyptians were not known for doing something just for the sake of doing it, they were meticulous. There is a reason that the stone was slightly bevelled on that one corner, I'm convinced of it. Maybe something was attached to the loops on the back of the stone and were fed through that small corner. The theory that the Pyramid may have been some sort of power plant still resonates with me. Thank you for publishing this documentary.

@Josef Daniel... Hawass is probably from Arab origin, or otherwise Berber. I don't think they consider themselves "white" like European people are called white.. Arabs are very proud for being Arab. Most Egyptians now are Arabs (language is also Arabic), mostly moslim, smaller group are Koptic Christians, there are ofcourse Black Africans in Egypt but that is a minority. I guess it was mostly the same in the times that the pyramids were build. A mixed population of light skinned people, nowadays known as "Arabs" with influences of Black Africans and White southern European-Greek and Romans. I don't think it was populated then only by dark Africans, because it is on the northside of Africa. All around North Africa there live light skinned people. Also it was not populated by European white people, simply because it's not in Europe.

When the camera let me look after that stone, that, what I was thinking seems true: someone put that big stone, using the handles, ATOP the entrance of the shaft that goes down to the queen's chamber just like closing a possible entrance... But when I've seen that just after that there was another stone *very near* all this baffled me: Why cover that handled stone? I feel more confused now... Or there's more after that second stone!

We will never know, we will never know about the other shafts either, we will never know about the piece of wood that was "mysteriously" lost. We will never know about the other potential rooms in the Pyramid because it is forbidden to drill or move the stone blocks.... That is how Muslim Egyptian Authorities have been lying and deceiving us all this time. They don't want the truth to be told because it would ruin their Academic Authority and it would also be a big hit to the country's religious beliefs. There is a lot at stake.
@tomasramirez4985

@kim Dierichsen It doesn't have to be destructive. It can be very careful and planed drilling and moving of blocks. Have this in mind, it took then 10 years to send a robot up the shaft again, between the 1st robotic expedition which drilled the hole on the stone door from the shaft and the 2nd robot expedition (the one we see in this video)... TEN YEARS!!!!! Plus, they don't need to send a robot, they only needed to send a camera wire up the shaft.....

@@tomasramirez4985 It would be helpful to know who, if anyone, had tried to do any exploration in the intervening ten years between the two explorations. If there was some conspiracy to keep the truth a secret there ought of be record of attempted explorations that were denied access to the pyramids. IMHO, the probably were no attempted explorations because no one cared to pay the great expense of carrying them out. I visited the pyramids two weeks ago and I will say that the desire to promote tourism, the run-down nature if the site, and the incessant harassment by local vendors does a lot to make most people want to leave the area sooner rather than later. I would also suggest that the very nature of Egyptian archaeology and it's emphasis on ancient religions does seem to rub Muslim people the wrong way. If it was not so cost prohibitive and amazingly difficult, Muslims leaders would have dismantled the pyramids long ago. In fact, they tried, and failed to do so hundreds of years ago.

The Air Shafts from the King's Chamber make it to the outside. The ones from the Queen's Chamber don't. The end credits indicate that this was the Southern Air Shaft, so the bending of the shaft was not related to the placement of the Grand Gallery,, which is just above the Northern Air Shaft. Morton Edgar probed the Northern shaft (in the 1920s or 1930s) with rods, but these broke - probably where the air shaft made a turn to the left and right again as it passed the Grand Gallery.

Awesome: the patience and dedication of these guys is literally monumental, people like that are the salt of the earth. The more that is discovered about the Pyramids, the more intriguing they become and their mystery deepens. The red stripe is surely a rope mark: the Egyptian builders used to mark a straight line by soaking a rope in red ochre, pulling it taut, then letting it slap against the surface to be cut, so it made a straight line. The marks alongside would likely be measurement marks. If only the robot could collect a scraping, they could analyse it, likewise the copper loops. The copper rivets look so tightly welded into the stone, it’s almost as if the metal was poured in while molten and left to solidify in situ. The ingenuity and craftsmanship of the Egyptians was breathtaking.

Lugs on both sides of the stone show that the stone was lifted and lowered in posistion using hooks either side of the block. One side broke a lug and the stone dropped into the shaft. they wonder what those bronze loops are for, its fairly obvious i say, its to get a hold of that stone slab so one can raise or lower it. which means the backside there has to be accessible somehow. and only way to find out so to start digging a way from the outside towards where that small room behind the stone slab is. now the real question is why that shaft is there at all, and why blocked by both ends, was it blocked by the original builders or possibly the ones inheriting/reusing the pyramid? the bronze has become green/rusty because of oxidation, so there is likely there has been airflow there despite being sealed

In buildings and ships before electronics a simple hollow tube connecting two communication end points would suffice. The angles of ascent in the "air shafts" change/vary rendering line of sight to stars in the amduat explanations less tenable, the shafts were closed at the chamber end, so much for fresh air from the shafts. Why enclose the shaft at one end with a brass handled door that leads down to the closed end communicating with the chamber? Upuaut turns out to be an inquisitive English engineer in the 19th century?

If the clips are copper, then maybe electrical terminal anodes: if bronze, less likely. Are there electrical capacitance values achieved when sticking such a volume of sandstone up so far above the bedrock ground plane sheathed in Tura limestone to an overall shape that comes to a point at the top, the base of which might have been set into or tunneled through to the aquifer at the time of construction? Electrical? Hydrological? Sidereal? In near perfect geodetic/lunar ratiocenation for a fixed terrestrial point of observation of the celestial Nile above? One of Rostau's [ancient name for the Pyramid] Cartesian coordinates is 29.9792458 = smack dab on the apex = the precise speed of light in meters per second and resolving in 9 digits: that's *NO MISTAKE OR COINCIDENCE*

All I can think of is that the shaft was used while building, it's not about what purpose it served in the end but what it did while building. That'd explain why it was blocked off at both ends at completion because it only needed to be present while building._ However I don't know what for, and why would there only be one? Was it for passing rope, water, sand? Might be flawed speculation.
