In this clip from 'Pioneers of Television: Crime Dramas' (2011) James Garner's TV series 'The Rockford Files' is looked at. It features an interview with Garner himself (he hasn't done many in recent years) and also with the late, great Stephen J. Cannell who created the show. Rita Moreno is interviewed briefly as well.

Have loved James Garner since I was twelve, I’m now seventy and I still think he was sooo handsome, funny and a Gentleman. No scandal, married to his wife for over fifty years, a civil rights champion and animal rights champion too. He was modest, scrupulously fair and it’s so sad he died.

He was just a decent man. He had morals and even though he had a specific political side he wasn't obnoxious about it and treated everyone the same. There are almost no actors with the class of Jim Garner today. Tom Selleck, Peter Falk, Sidney Portier, All four Golden Girls, Angela Lansbury, Dick Van Dyke and so many other actors\actresses from that classic era were the same.

I was sad, when I found him and learned he had already made his journey Home. I was going to write him. We’re so used to that now, writing to our fave people online, and often they write back. There should be a warning on these channels ‘Our channel plays old shows. Don’t get too attached.’ But hey, James Garner, see you on #TheOtherSideOfTheWaterfall #TheShack 💕

Don't forget Megan, the blind psychologist. Jim probably had more scenes of romantic relationship with her than anyone else in the show. There were lots of ex-girlfriends popping up too. I do wish they'd have played up more romance between Jim and Beth, I liked Beth a lot. I wonder why she left the show in the 4th season. I never liked Rita's character much. Of the 3 episodes with Rita, my least favorite is the one where she obviously wants to be his girlfriend, but I'm glad Jim wouldn't have any of that.

This mini-documentary about "The Rockford Files" is weird in that it doesn't mention that Rockford was basically an update of the Bret Maverick character from Garner's earlier series. At least, though, unlike with their Maverick clip, they didn't completely ignore the creator of both series, Roy Huggins, and showed a picture of him this time, although they soft-pedaled his contribution. I highly recommend the online "Archive of American Television" interviews for Huggins, Cannell, and Garner.

Columbo and Rockford are imo the greatest detective\cop characters of all time. It's because they're the most human detective\cop characters in history. Columbo is as genius as Sherlock Holmes and Jim Rockford was as cool, smooth and badass (when he wasn't a coward lol) as Philip Marlowe but the difference is you'd hang out with Columbo and Rockford as two every day guys. They were flawed, they were quirky and most importantly they were fun

In one of the many scenes btw Rockford and Angel, Angel ticks Rockford off and Rockford asks Angel, "Why should I help you?" Angel, not hesitating a second, said, "Because you're my friend." Inaccurate. The basic idea behind "Rockford" belonged to Roy Huggins. Cannell just turned it into a script under Huggins' direction, the same working arrangement Huggins had used with other writers on Maverick and several other previous programs. Huggins received story credit on 80% of Rockford's first season shows and his production company owned a significant piece of the series.
@kendallrivers1119
@kendallrivers1119 2 жыл бұрын
Actually while it's true Roy was significant like obviously the title The Rockford Files, The casting of Jim and the story of the Pilot it was Stephen who developed the character of Rockford, created Angel, Rocky, Beth and Becker and the whole tone and feel of the show was more under Cannell's guidance. Both men were crucial and both co created it but Rockford was more Cannell's baby than Roy's overall.
