Since the launch of SubMission Audio's new plugin, Flatline, we've seen a lot of misinformation spread around the internet regarding how clipping, and clipping tools in particular work, or are designed to work. In this video, Ermin gives a little run down of the history of clipping, how it found its way into the modern mastering ecosystem, and how it all relates to Flatline.

Hi Ermin, thank you for this informative video. If I may make a suggestion though, I wish that you specified in the manual that with the Shape knob at 100% it's just the plain digital hard clipping. Based on the copywriting in your promotional videos and Flatline's product page, one might mistake having Shape knob at 100% will emulate analog hard clipping, which I'm sure you know is quite different than the plain digital hard clipping. I think the reason why some find it weird that Flatline nulls with other clippers out there with Shape knob at 100% is that they expect it to recreate the kind of hard clipping you get when clipping analog converters. The way Flatline is marketed seems to present Flatline in the same category with other analog emulation plugins. I feel that it's not very common for a plugin that aims to emulate some kind of analog sound to have a hidden "digital" mode that isn't shown in the GUI or documentation. At the end of the day, I think this piece of information would be very important to include in the manual so users can use your plugin properly!

This quote: "Now, I know that we aren't all mathematical geniuses, So I hope you're able to retain all of that information " paired with the white lab coat in the thumbnail is no accident. Again, Ermin, this kind of subtle savagery is too much to handle this early in the morning.

I've shot this out hard against a bunch of other clippers to convince myself I didn't need it. The only thing I can really say is that it sounds like expensive studio gear - it won out in 100% of tests. This coupled with a few choice Acustica and Leapwing Audio Plugins, and into Pro-L 2 has been giving me the best results I've ever achieved. Cheers!

The thing is, some pro mastering facilities were clipping A-D converters well before dedicated digital peak limiters even existed. With oversampling converters, aliasing (and aliasing IMD) was also being minimized.

I tested it against gclip (free plugin) hard clipping its exactly the same, they null. And when you put it at 95% and the other one softer at 5% when you flip the phase you only hear noise and its really really low in volume. They are pretty much the same with the exception that flatline may do a better job at reproducing clipping. Even when you put it at 50% each doing 3-4db or consistent reduction you only hear some little high frequency noises that are very low. You just try both and see what you like best. They are very very similar. You have to really crank them and see GR to notice a difference when flipping phase. Try them both and see what you prefer, maybe you prefer the free one :) I own flatline and its also very good. Fabfilter style plugin, easy to use, sounds good :)

Very happy to hear that you both own and enjoy the plugin. Thank you for sharing your experiences. Allow me to clarify on some things brought up here: "I tested it against gclip (free plugin) hard clipping its exactly the same, they null." This is great news. That's exactly what they should be doing when hard clipping. You can also get limiters like Ozone to null on hard clipping too, with specific settings. This doesn't mean they're broken. It just means that they're rendering hard clipping correctly. "And when you put it at 95% and the other one softer at 5% when you flip the phase you only hear noise and its really really low in volume." Clipping is fundamentally not going to sound drastically different, unless a creator has specifically injected an artificial 'enhancement' curve. We could do this very easily to fool the 'null-testers' into thinking the plugin is doing something radically different, but that would serve no purpose for the professional mastering engineers looking for transparency and world class maximization - which this plugin was primarily designed for. Mastering is a game of 0.1% changes making all the difference. My suggestion is that, rather than null-testing, to simply use your ears and listen for the musical qualities of the material being processed. This results in a far more relevant comparison for day to day use. This is why we provide a free demo, so that people can decide for themselves whether Flatline is their right tool, before they commit to anything. Thanks again for sharing your experiences.

But flatline sounds cleaner, almost no harshness, and I can get to white pony levels. Gclip hurts my ears at half the gain reduction of flatline.

Hey Ermin can you go into some more detail about why oversampling the signal doesn't give the classic sound? From my understanding if it's the analog signal which is getting clipped in the converters, then you'd want as much oversampling as possible to recreate it in the box. Interested to hear your take!

Is it because there's no AA filter when the waveform is converted from analog back to digital?
@briancase6180
@briancase6180 3 жыл бұрын
That's not true. Every halfway decent analog to digital stage must have a filter to keep out frequencies higher than the Nyquist frequency of the digital stage. If you're sampling at 44.1KHz, you gotta have a filter that keeps out frequencies higher than 22.05KHz (half the sample rate). Since filters aren't perfect, they are designed, most of the time, to filter out 20KHz and higher. That's why 44.1KHz was chosen: to give a clean 20Hz to be 20KHz frequency response in the understanding that inexpensive filters would often be used. I'm quite surprised that this plugin offers only up to 4x oversampling. Even if higher wouldn't always be used, it's pretty silly not to at least offer the oversampling rates (many offer up to 128x) that would be necessary to prevent all audible aliasing. It's an expensive plugin, you can't not at least offer it. If it's detrimental in some way, explain how ("too much CPU" is not a valid explanation, especially as processors get faster and have more cores).

Can i suggest an alternate UI switch where you can set the ceiling visually against the audio signal peaks Ala gclip? Would make it super fast for material you want to tame but not maximize. This UI config would make the plug in perfect in my book.
